Backtracking works in 2D Metroids because the movement is fun. The slow clunky movement in this game makes backtracking painful and boring.

You mean the impact crater? Phazon Mines is great, Impact Crater is just one big room and a spider ball track everyone just walks past.

You can run past those and power bomb the ones that get near. In later versions of the game (PAL, NTSC-J, NTSC updates, Trilogy & Remaster) they made the 2nd phase of Metroid Prime have 2x as much HP which makes it a very tedious fight on those versions. I don't like that phase, probably the worst Hyper Mega Beam finale in the series unless Other M had one.

Backtracking Should Not Be In A Metroid Game. Proper level design negates the NEED for backtracking to finish the game. Gamers who feel compelled to do backtracking for optional objectives to 100% are autistic. These are verifiable facts.

Nah I disagree it was fine. The primary issues with this game that made things feel slower was the weapon switching and the color coded enemies that forced you to pick the right weapon every time to deal with them. You fix these two things and the games biggest weakness is fixed.

Backtracking in Prime 1 (and 2) isn't so bad, there's always a expansion and/or artifact you can grab along the way, and you are able to collect the last artifact inmediately after you defeat the Omega Pirate. Issue is when you're trying to complete a low% run without OOB, it gets stupidly tedious. Prime 3 and 4 are the ones that have backtracking completely fucked up.
