How could this problem have been prevented?…Is it even a problem?
never seen a roguelike platformer
>>730922190dead cellsrogue legacy
>>730922095Not really going to come up because the kind of drooling retard to use the new form of roguelike with no actual genre descriptor to go with it, like sensible people do, isn't the type to know of the old form of roguelike that is a genre unto itself.
>>730922190because it's not a roguelike if it's a platformer>>730922249not roguelikes
>>730922095people only complain about the term because they want to feel better than other people. It literally takes one extra sentence to resolve the problem>"Yeah, I play lots of roguelikes">"what are some of your favorites?">"Oh like gungeon, isaac"vs.>"Oh like cogmind, cdda"
>>730922298The term is a "roguelike platformer".Traditional roguelikes are a specific flavor of roguelike RPG that once encompassed the entirety of the term "roguelike".
>>730922249oh fuck i played dead cellswasn't a fanwould risk of rain 2 be considered a platformer? u can fall of the map just like mario >>730922298a game can be multiple genres at once
>>730922190Spelunky
>>730922095roguelite completely solves this issue
>>730922095It's not a problem. Language evolving is a feature, not a bug.
>>730922424no it doesn't because 'roguelite' should be used for describing games that are like rogue, that fall in the category of ROGUELIKE, but are noticably lighter on featuresthe perfect example of this would be something like pokemon mystery dungeon, it's still a roguelike, but it's very watered down and made easy because it's a children's game. or it could be similar enough to a roguelike in execution but still has a twist which pivots it to another genre, like Lufia II's ancient cave trial
>>730922332I mean partly yeah, but it also is just very strange if you played roguelikes before 2010 or whenever BoI came out.Imagine if you woke up one day, and it was totally normal to call any game with real-time combat and guns in it a first-person shooter. And everybody is calling Starcraft and Guilty Gear and SWTOR all FPSes. That is the best analogy I can come up with for what this is like from the perspective of somebody who played roguelikes back when they referred to a specific subgenre of RPG, and not just "any game with permadeath and proc gen."
>>730922424It does, and I use it and people understand what I'm saying. But when I say roguelike and I'm talking about overhead turn based tile based dungeon crawlers where you need to eat food I have to specify anyways.
battle royales are technically shooter roguelikes
realistically you'd never be in a context where referring to an ascii rpg would be ambiguous. unless you're talking to the biggest grognard in the world they're probably referring a pixel action game.
>IssacI hope someone was fired for this blunder
>>730922332>It literally takes one extra sentence to resolve the problemIf you think that's acceptable you're a fucking retard who is probably poor.
>>730922298>not roguelikesthat's the comic's point you thick nigger
>>730922332If someone near me said they """play""" cdda, I'd assault them, probably to death
>>730922568It wasn't one day, it has been more than a decade. Also every fucking genre had its name change over the course of its lifetime, but only roguetards are so stubborn they can't let go, and everybody else doesn't care enough to bother with them.
>>730922568At the same time, there isn't any actual argument to be had over what "first person shooter" means, while "like rogue" is an interpretable definition.
>>730922095You niggers act like Rogue was some massive, well known game like Diablo. Barely anybody even knew of it before googling why the genre is called roguelike.
>>730922095This is not a problem.
>>730922095autistic schizo threadthey're roguelikes now unc, terms change
>>730922095In modern use it's a marketing word for procedural generation, an unmarketable "nerd word".Roguelike comprises of two short positive words while prodecural generation of two long and "cold" words. There is no force in the world that will make stupid and malleable people spontaneously switch to technical terms.
>>730922568>very strangethe answer lies is, as usual, how lots of people are retarded, and vidya genre names are even more retarded than usualbut since people who play real roguelikes are most certainly autistic, they stubbornly refuse to let go of the term that's been reduced to total meaninglessnessif you want to feel better (in a misery-loves-company way), then go look up steam tags like "text-based"
