Because it was simple and charming without a shit ton of bloat mechanics. Sure, there were still DVs and Stat Experience, but it sure as hell beats all the autistic bullshit added later in the series like natures, abilities, held items, egg moves, and all that other nonsense.

they were limited by hardware and talent and were poor so they could only do what the customers (~8 year old boys) actually wanted
its rather unfortunate pokemania started instantly
would have been nice to get a proper sequel with all the shortcomings fixed and none of the retarded shit added and then pokemania could begin
