Paying a subscription to use peer to peer multiplayer infrastructure on console. Basically paying to use your own internet.

It has somehow become more successful as time has gone on.

Obviously Star Citizen, but at least they actually put some effort into their scam and used some modicum of effort to sucker people in. I'd expect No Man's Sky has better effort to profit ratio, but they really lucked out on people being even stupider than they ever expected. We all remember that Reddit screenshot of the dude saying he met up with someone despite not being able to see one another. No developer would have ever anticipated players being this willing to scam themselves, and I assume Star Citizen has scammed a lot more people than No Man's Sky ever did even if the latter did it with far less effort.

Honestly why did people even think it'd be possible to see each other? Like all you would need to do to test if the game has multiplayer is stop your internet connection for a bit and see if the game reacts

I was going to say Star Citizen, but to me it seemed that Chris Roberts was well-intentioned in the beginning. At the time he was considered a great auteur coming off of Wing Commander and it seemed risky for anyone to destroy their own reputation over a promise of roleplay-wing-commander. Scam Citizen therefore is the biggest unintentional scam ever conceived to me.

The second option should be Aliens Colonial Marines. Randy scammed Sega of a few million dollars and invested into his own game, Borderlands 2, while Colonial Marines was released in an absolute shit state.
