Is it better that Amy remain a character who can't fend for herself and has to rely on Sonic because it maintains a status quo that makes traditionalists feel at home?

She held her own pretty well in adventure despite getting chased the entire game

Amy belongs to Blaze.

Amy was only a damsel in CD, I like her better as a Boy Crazy girly girl with Monster Strength
>>
She's better as she is in Adventure and Heroes where her motivations are juvenile and amusing, but is still competent

They made Amy more capable as early as the very first spinoff games and settled on "Fuck it, her incompetence was all in her mind" in her second real appearance. And by a couple more games in they'd landed on "She's got killer willpower and can do anything if she tries, she just gets distracted and helps people first."

I don't see any real need to backtrack that or otherwise change it. Seems pretty reasonable. She's good at what she does but it's usually her mindset that holds her back.

>Is it better that Amy remain a character who can't fend for herself
In SA1, Amy is a damsel that is depicted as being both in distress and capable of fending for herself. It's part of her arc.
For whatever reason, modern creatives think "damsel" characters are either automatically useless, or can't carry a narrative as a protagonist. I guess because they're stupid.
