There seemed to be some interest in the thread I posted yesterday so I'm posting again. I'd just like to discuss it more in a place that isn't the Mewgenics discord server (full of children).

>What is Mewgenics?

Mewgenics is a roguelike TRPG made by Edmund McMillen, creator of The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy. You take cats on runs with events, battles and bosses, then take them home where you can breed them to make kittens that carry their attributes and abilities. It plays like XCOM and Into The Breach but with very deep roguelike elements. It has a similar run progression to Slay The Spire with branching paths and bosses at the end of each chapter.

It releases on the 10th of February. There is no preorder, but Edmund has stated the game will cost $29.99 and that there will be some release day discount.

As someone with a few thousands hours in Isaac I was sceptical of this will turn out, but there are a few things that have made me excited.

Edmund has been firm on the depth of this game, saying that there will be about the same amount of content in it that Isaac Rebirth currently has. He stated that there will be over 1200 abilities split across the many classes and ~900 items in the game.

Another interesting point is his comments on interactions between the abilities. One of the most fun parts of Isaac is the item synergies, this was difficult to implement in Isaac because it had to be hard coded into the game, but with Mewgenics a more broad system has been implemented from the ground up.

This is most clearly seen through the elements system, where abilities can have elements like fire and ice that can interact. A simple interaction is that fire abilities can set fire to grass tiles which turn them into burning tiles that will damage enemies.

To what extent is this true? Isaac's systems were pretty broad to begin with, I thought the majority of synergies came from that.

I think it's for the best because Mewgenics was going to be a very different game. It had the same base of a house and cat breeding, but the gameplay was focused on various minigames the cats would do. Seemed very empty in comparison to what we're getting

I think a delay is extremely unlikely. Edmund has mentioned that they planned to release the game around September last year but decided to push it to February to give them time to polish it without being rushed.

Ok pal, "ugly" is a strong word. We all have different tastes when it comes to art, but how can you truly know for sure that something is "ugly"? Just because you have disdain for the appearance of something that doesn't necessarily make it inherently so. Perhaps your understanding and perception of what is "ugly" is the one who is corrupted?

I suggest we return to the root of the problem and answer the important questions. What does it mean to be "ugly", and how have we come to decide what is "ugly", and what isn't?

Checked vods of the dev playing the game and while I like what I see, I cant help but notice that it seems to be too easy. For instance on one of his runs, which take place super early game, he is able to clear 3rd act while making multiple big missplays without losing a single cat. Later on in the game, you are supposed to have stockpiled great items in your storage and bred very strong cats and the game or at least a big portion of it(say the first 2 acts at the very least) will be trivial I would guess.
Now you might say that you will be able to take alternate paths and go to peepeepoopoo hell and shit but the early-mid parts of your current expedition will still be a trivial slog that takes too much time once you have upgraded your base a bit. Please tell me I am wrong

I watched one of his playthrough videos and it seemed like most battles were decided by turn one but still lasted another few turns just mopping up stragglers and items. Maybe the later areas won't have that problem
