3, I'd also heavily recommend FES, but in it you can't directly control your teammates. You can change their strategies so they attack more or defend more or heal you more but it's left up to the ai. Remake allows you to control them but imo loses some of the charm and atmosphere of FES.

Also we say FES because it added in a big epilogue called The Answer. Remake has this too but it's paid DLC. Either is fine I guess.

I don't know how to explain it without spoiling 3, I love it probably more than 4 even though the dungeon is kind of a chore to go through. 3 has a slow burn beginning but once it gets going the characters develop in a way that's independent from the player's input, which is a different feeling from 4 where most of the growth seems to be a result of the protagonist character's influence. Leaving Inaba at the end of 4 is a tearjerker in an equal yet different way from the ending of 3 which I seriously urge you to not get spoiled on. P3 is worth your time if you can tolerate the trek up Tartarus.

I don't feel any fondness for P5 even though it was visually impressive and the music has a lot of catchy tunes.

Yeah that's one reason why I prefer 3's story. In 4 you never see anything happening that isn't from Yu's perspective, while in 3 there's multiple scenes where the MC isn't present or even talked about and it feels more realistic.
