>>730988083Anon its in the top 5 most profitable FF games ever sold. 11 was the most for years and years until Squeenix went out of their way to kill it, 14 only just recently took over 11's spot. other two are 7 and 10.
>>730988373Yeah no-one played 9 cuz the graphics were a downgrade and no-one liked the chibi characters. The only people who did play it are pedos and furries.
>>730988083The military component, I'm not trying to play Syphon Filter after hearing Balam Garden theme song. Didn't care about the missions we're supposed to be invested in. And its a low effort by Squenix after doing the military theme in FF7's intro. I wish I could skip to disc 2 when Squall wakes up in a desert.
>>730988135But that's just like me?
>>730988083>too ambitious quite the opposite really. The game started out as a tech demo but due to the landscape of games evolution at the time and square's huge success off 7, testers were begging for it to be a full game, so they put a team on it that had barely any direction or desire. The plot speaks for itself, it's garbage. But hey, cool card game song, a couple fun battle songs and nice graphics. Also the zack rip off is kinda cool. But the rest of the game is a steaming pile of garbage.
Most of the issues cited in 1999-00 reviews is related to the junction system, people said the plot surpassed 7
>>730988083Zell is the best supporting character in the entire FF franchise (and a good friend).
>>730988407>>730988373FF8 was the first reputation hit that FF ever took. The series was hit after hit, only getting bigger. After 7 it seemed unshakeable. It was FF8 that changed that
>>730988468>sales = goodthe star wars sequels hit numbers too. that's what franchises are for
>>730988572bullshit
>>730988083There's a few cool things you can do with the junction system but it's ultimately overrated with his complex and interesting the builds can be. It's also criminally easy to break which ruins game balance anyway making finding interesting utility from the system kind of moot anyway The story is pretty weak and relies on some lame conveniences The limit break system sucksEnemy scaling feels weird in jrpgs It's just a shit game
It's the most interesting FF to think about when it comes to world building. Especially all the fan theories like "Squall is dead" and with the main plot being meh.Balamb Garden being comfy carried it with nostalgia hindsight though.
>>730988632Dispute it then? Look at the reception to 5, 6 and 7 compared to 8
>>730988572>The series was hit after hit, only getting bigger. After 7 it seemed unshakeable. It was FF8 that changed thatyeah you have zero fucking clue
>>730988503Except FF7 characters are also Chibi, they look like Quest 64 on N64.FF9 was visually a PS1's swan song, cant get much better than that with the technology.
>>730988083Level scaling in an rpg is an automatic fail every time.

>>730988572RPGFan 1999 FFVIII reviews (each is 1 reviewer)Like past FF games, the scope of the plot is truly epic. The plot contains many exciting twists, and poignant moments abound. Character development for the lead characters is excellent, too, though the supporting characters could have been developed better. The dialogue is quite clever in some places, which is also something new to me for the series. One of the few things that did bother me about FFVIII’s storyline was that, for some reason, the characters as a whole didn’t really appeal to me. In past FF games, there were always characters that I really liked, and as a whole, I always liked my party. In FFVIII, this wasn’t the case, and I’m still not too sure why. Sure, there are annoying characters. For example, Zell looks like what I’d imagine to be the Japanese stereotype of what a Californian skater-punk looks like (I honestly think he’s one of the most absurd-looking characters ever to star in an RPG, despite the cool tattoo on his face). He also exhibits all of the control of a five-year-old over his emotions. Quistis’ arrogance turned out to be a nuisance as well. But Squall, Rinoa, and the others aren’t annoying, but still didn’t really appeal to me (OK, I did like Laguna and Rinoa). But as a whole, I didn’t really care about my party"The plot flows very smoothly and retains its focus. No matter how many twists they throw at you, it never really takes you too far off track. The game doesn’t really take on the grandiose, world beating mantle of past Final Fantasys, but it is probably their most consistent effort story-wise yet. It is much more about relationships than it is about saving the world. I have to give credit to Square for taking some chances and telling a story that stays true to its nature. If they hadn’t taken those chances, it certainly wouldn’t have worked as well."
>>730988858And what about fan reception?
>>730988083>fastest selling FF>failedMemes aside, it's the first FF that didn't have Sakaguchi directly involved with creative which is why so much of it is a departure from series norms.
I played this for the first time a few years ago and was wildly underwhelmed by the junction system after people hyped it up to be this crazy deep thing

>>730989045Lets be honest, FF8 peaked with the Beach landing and Edeas parade assassination attempt, both on disc one.FF7 had multiple points past disc one on that scale, but if FF8 kept up the momentum it would be the best FF game ever.
>>730989020>>730988992Why did sales tank compared to 7?

>>730989308True, I think young me was pissed off I couldn't play Tripple Triad anymore in the cities by the last disc due to Time compression/limited disc space. Did they at least fix that in the remaster?
7, 5, 8 and 10 make the top 4 of mainline FFs.4, 6 and 9 are comfy experiences but they lack in customization, player agency and replayability. It's ok to like them, but they simply are not as good as 5, 7, 8 and 10.
>>730989343If you completed Card Club quest at Balamb, the CC members are in Ragnarok in CD 4 and can be played with. They also have all the missed, lost and refined cards so you can farm refine items from the cards if needed
>>730989381>7, 5, 8 and 10 make the top 4 of mainline FFs.BAIT
I think FF8 hatred came around in the early to mid 00s when western games media and discussion became extremely anti-Japanese for some reason. Squall being…Squall made him and the game an easy target. As for the gameplay problems while I do agree they are present the real issue is the same one FF2 had: people try to game the system without actually understanding how the system works and unintentionally ruin it for themselves.
>>730989439?It's the truth. Tell me how 4, 6 or 9 are better than any of 5, 7, 8 and 10
>>730989381Hear, hear!
>>730988786no facts on it. Was just journo opinion shortly after it released and it seems reasonable enough to accept. Platinum versions of 7 came with "Squaresoft tech bonus" disc which was basically the garden from the beginning of 8, when the Platinum version released worldwide, it was changed to FF8 Demo.
>>730988701It's the exact same thing with Metal Gear Solid.MGS3 is often considered the best in the series, but it sold poorly. That's because of the backlash that 2 caused, by making Raiden the main character for most of the game. The preceding game generates hype for the next. As >>730988916 correctly points out, it was the fastest selling Final Fantasy game, which is entirely due to the popularity of FF7.
Game that has really high points, but overall tedious to play with some cringe parts in story.AI should turn it into a 3 hours movie.
>>7309883739 a lot of people liked but to me it felt too similar to the SNES games. I liked the modern direction the series was going and IX felt like it was basically "what if we mad IV and V but with current technology">>730988294This but unironically. It's a very moody and "emo" game
>>730988547The junction system WAS garbage. you would basically have to farm low level random encounters to get stronger. If they remade VIII with a modern action system I would love it
>>730989461It's one of my favourites to replay because the systems allow you to just run through the story. It will give you more than enough shit along the way from boss drops etc.No Card Mod abuse, no Enc-None, no Draw spam. Just run through and enjoy the game.I still TT for fun and do the Research Facility etc right before Luntaic Pandora at the end of Disc 3. Because at that point you already have enough shit (Triple, Flare, Holy, basically everything but GF skills you'd Card Mod for) to break everything by choice and Ulti's Castle and Omega are fun at 100.
>>730989905>you would basically have to farm low level random encounters to get stronger.False. Go GF menu, choose GF -> Abilities. You now see you can actually choose which abilities the GF is learning. If left default, GF first learns useless GF HP up and GF Mag up. At the end of the list there's the refining abilities that let you make spells from items. Quezacoatl also has Card Command and Card refining abilites. You don't need to farm low level encounters for spells, instead you can simply turn the enemeis into cards, make items of them and make spells from the items.Anyone with IQ over 80 knew this.
>>730989863IX was slow as molasses. It's a nice game but everythingabout it is just slowed down to all hell. Combat, skill learning, travel, story pacing... so much of the game is just slow as shit that I just won't ever do it again.
>>730988083story sucks, party building too unfocused >>7309883739 sold worse originally for being a late ps1 game when the ps2/FFX were already revealed but it won the long game selling more with each re-release
>>730990106This. It's nice experience but I dread the thought of having to replay it
>>730990147>save corrupted after the Iifa TreeFar enough to be so fucing irritating and then having to do it all again was soul destroying.
>>730989998No one actually played this game, calm down.
>>730990147>>730990106Agreed. It was fun for middle school. I enjoyed it, but I would NEVER want to play it again, while I wouldn't mind playing a remaster of VIII or X
ff8 was too mature for its timewe were all teenagers playing teenagers in the game
>>730990139>story sucks, party building too unfocused
>>730990330>we were all teenagers playing teenagers in the gameThe Evangelion Problem
>>730989381>6 lacks in customizationSurely, you jest
>>730990954Nope. Compare the level of customization in 6 to 5, 7, 8 and 10
>>730990954Is FF6 your favorite?
>>730990818true that
>>730988083>false narrative>>730988107>>730988148>>730988294>3 shills And half the posters follow along. You match "people" who unironically congregate when someone rings a big bell into being niggercattle.
huh
>>730988083>why did it fail>9.6 million copies sold>still gets discussed frequently despite being 30 years old>considered a masterpiece by anyone with triple digit IQ
>>730988083The game was in development for less than a year. What, 11-9 months? I'm actually surprised they managed to put together what they did in such a time. VIII exemplifies everything bad that happened at the company under Sakaguchi's management: endless crunches with devs spending nights in the office, unrealistic deadlines.
>>730988083No, it sucked.
>>730990818I had played FF8 before going off to uni and was thinking that the dorms were going to be so cool like Balamb Garden. (They were not).
>>730994342Tell me what sucked in it and I tell you why you are wrong
>>730989461It came about with Spoony.
I found Wizard of Dragon Ball Oz the most disappointing. Return to the roots my ass, where are my fucking JOBS?!
>>730989308Ultimecia's Castle is honestly the single best final dungeon in all of Final Fantasy. It felt like a mix between Dracula's Castle from Castlevania and the Spencer Mansion from Resident Evil. You got to deal with unique puzzles and special boss fights to unlock your abilities. No Final Fantasy game has done this. I just wish they made the bosses more difficult and the puzzles more refined and detailed.
>>730988083Anyone else hate the world of Final Fantasy 8? Its so drab and depressing. And I hate how the most fantastical part of this universe are those alien Jews who funded Balamb Garden and yet the story doesn't involve them much and no Moombas don't count as a separate species as they're also those alien Jews simply failed versions of them.Anyway the world felt way too drab and depressing. Realism is kind of horrible because it kills the fantasy and what was up with that random ridiculous Futuristic City? Esthar even existing makes no sense while the rest of the world is essentially a regular modern world.
>>730988083It didn't fail either critically or commercially. It being controversial at all is a very modern take. That was the entire point Spoony was trying to make back in the day, he thought FF8 wasn't as good as everyone else claimed, and his review series started less than 10 years after the game first came out.
>>730995248But it is controversial. The story is half baked especially the pointless filler Laguna segments. The gameplay can be confusing and lets be blunt even if you understand Junction that means you must never touch magic as its not a good idea to use powerful spells that will lower your stats. The whole game is simply spamming your Limits.
>>730995191All FFs had their dark and serious side. It's just more present in FF8 because the characters arent chibi, they are more real to our brain. Same with FF10 and FFs following it.
>>730995401Autist. Using junctioned spells don't effect your stats in any meaningful ways. Even if you used 10 junctioned spells in a fight you wouldnt see a neaningful dent in your stats. And you know what you do after the fight? You replenish the spells to max with your refining abilities. It's same shit with FF6 esper stat ups on level up. It makes no meaningful difference. Only min-max autists screech about nominal number change in stats when in reality it doesnt affect your damage output or survival at all
>>730991105Once you get all the summons, no chaeacter is held back>>730991486Nopers. I like 5 better. But i'll acknowlwdge that all after are all more cinematic. But 6 did Gogo SO wrong
I actually just finished disc 1 for the first time tonight. Game is just kinda boring so far.
>>730995652Did you remember to draw Suren from Dollet radio tower boss and Carbuncle from Iguion boss? Did you get Nagic Lamp from Cid when you left for Timber? Did you get Brothers GF from the king's tomb?
>>730995652It picks up. But i hope you enjoy melodrama. Truth be told, Zell carries the whole thing with his upbeat approach to all things
>>730988083One thing I hated about FF8 is how worthless the Chocobo is. Doing the Chocobo sidequest is worthless. Like I get that Chocobos are useless in most FF games but FF7 introduced the idea of Chocobo sidequests being useful to unlock good rewards but FF8's sidequest is trash the only thing you can get is stupid cards.
>>730995730Well, none of us had chocoworld
did it fail? I assumed it sold very well based purely on the popularity of ff7 and people blindly buying the next game such as myself when I was a kid
>>730995730I get you dont like FF8 chocobos but it'd be wise not to badmouth triple triad and the cards
>>730995595But gathering new ingredients to replenish your powerful magic stock is annoying and tedious. And do it all the time? That's frustrating. Especially when you have multiple characters with their magic stocks to be concerned with. You don't want to be wasteful. I just like to make each character cover their essential stats with the necessary strong magics and then cruise the rest of the game.
>>730995774FUCK EVERYONE THAT BADMOUTHS TRIPLE TRIAD. THEY CAN GO TO FUCKING HELL. Chances are theyre all living there anyway
>>730988083Junctioning is a cool idea, on the fly stat changing, done poorly, its slow to get all the magics you need to junction and you need to top up regularly if you want to use magic regularly, and explained so badly in game that many people don't even know how it works after several hours of gameplay. And when you're not junctioning right, the game is absolute trash to play.
>>730995821>Especially when you have multiple characters with their magic stocks to be concerned withAutism. You only need 3 characters to have the spell libraries. You can switch each characters soells in the party menu along with their junctions.I get your angle. You are min-max autist. The difference in the stats for using junctioned spells only exist in your head. I recommend you drop that mindset because it cucks you out.
