A counter is a unique gameplay interaction. It's scripted in the literal sense, but it is something engaged with by the player that can be engaged with at any opportunity that allows for it.

Leon hadn't even shot him for a few seconds, nor did he ever shoot his chainsaw, and the zombie was about to attack when Leon did the counter. He has these flashy kill animations on all the weapons though. With the handgun he shoots them under the chin, and with the shotgun he sticks it in their mouth. The question is still how he triggers them, and what are the requirements. It could be a counter, but there's one instant where a zombie is neither stunned or attacking, and Leon just goes up to him and shoots him under the chin with the handgun.

This may the case since there is an instance where Leon runs up and does the point blank finisher with a handgun, and the zombie wasn't attacking or stunned. But what is the indicator that this can be done? Possibly if you try to shoot a zombie up close and they're one shot away from dying with the weapon you're using, so maybe not something you can always predict unless you know they're one shot away from dying with that weapon.

I don’t think I’ve ever played a good dual protagonist game with differing playstyles, they all suffer from “Sonic Unleashed syndrome”.

Not to mention that gameplay wise, the series is now a mess between Re8/7, 6, 4 and 2 remake, 4, it’s gotten very messy because every new entry tries to keep iterating on other previous entries while being within a new mechanical entry.

Well almost every shooter has limited ammo, does that make them survival? For me the core characteristic that distinguishes survival horror from a horror-themed action game is that, besides forced encounters/bosses, you're never directly rewarded for killing anything and it's always theoretically better to just avoid it and save resources. Monsters don't drop items, the only reward for killing them is that you don't have to deal with them anymore, and ideally it can actually make things worse (Crimson Head-style mechanics).

Obviously it's pretty difficult to combine that design philosophy with action which is part of why I don't like the games where they do try and do it, like RE8. But I suppose that completely segmenting the two styles into totally different missions/campaigns is a step in the right direction, if you really have to try and do both in one game.

It is technically true but nowhere close to the same thing, Leon doesn't get a loaded gun from every ganado he kills. When you're playing a shooter you're generally not going to be taking your time lining up your shots unless you're doing a stealthy kill, because ammo is far more abundant. And there are now 4 numbered mainline RE games where you find loot from enemies you kill, including money for permanent upgrades, so you do have incentive to kill them on top of not leaving active threats. All I know know is regardless of what genre Resident Evil is, it offers a unique gameplay style I don't get to experience with other games. I remember trying deadspace and it just did not click with me like RE games do.
