Why is the scope or interactive detail of games not increasing? We now have games that take literal decades and billions of dollars to make, yet they play exactly like games from 20+ years ago except with somewhat better graphics Why will TES6 be the same size as Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim? Why will GTA6 still be only one city on a small island? Why will neither of them allow you to destroy buildings or terrain? Why will neither of them have reactive worlds that build on your choices?
>>731015980because you guys and the journos demonize reusing assets and using AI .
>>731016638Shut the fuck up slopper
Management/not-working types insisting on their importance :^)
>>731015980Whats that big island to the right of dun morogh, is it that underwater zone? It's because the demands are higher, voice acting and art have way more demands. The guy who did the shade of aran fight in khara once did a big retrospective blog post on the design and process of making the fight. It's a total nightmare at blizzard with like 10 different departments to do anything (and this is why the fight is still bugged 20 years later)
>>731015980Because none of that has anything to do with gameplay. If you want a gigantic playground then there's games like minecraft.
>>731017494Post Mushihimesama 1cc by (you) or fuck off.
>>731015980Why is the quality of literally anything not getting better while the cost of everything is raising exponentially? If you stopped being a fucking manbaby who only cares about his video games for one second you'll see that comparatively, video games are in a great spot compared to most other facets of our economies, you can thank digital game stores for cutting out the costs of physical sales for that, but the cost of wages for Devs, assets, licenses, taxes is through the roof and that's just downstream of the rise of cost of living for all of the people making these and that's even with crunch culture, layoff churn and reusable assets. We are all being robbed by inflation, and no it's not some kind of force of nature and economics, and there are people profiting from this.
>>731015980Suppose games did get bigger and now every game has 10000 hours of gameplay. Would anyone have time to play more than 1 game in their life?
>>731015980Because mechanics take far longer to make and it's a gamble.Something that has sold billions before but with your IP and better graphics is an easy decision.Something like games that sold billions but with far better mechanics, more detail and so on is a hard decision and it's a gamble, you might pay all that money and put it into a game that doesn't sell well because your mechanics despite being more detailed, aren't liked as much as the shallow version.Another component of it is the reliance on existing game engines. When you use something like Unity, Unreal or Godot you're sacrificing performance for faster development. You're sacrificing the ability to make your game perform far better, for the convenience of not having to get rendering, sound, physics, gameplay tooling and cross platform written.Which again, is ultimately more expensive and is a big gamble of it's reception.Bethesda games for example are always a game about a hero that solos the entire world. This is because their engine is very good at making games like that, but only that. In their engine, they can't make a game about someone sneaking and climbing, someone leading a resistance and getting supporters and an army to fight the occupying force. That's why all Bethesda games has a script extender as a mod. Their engine is narrow in scope, but it does that scope VERY well.
>>731018092there are plenty of numbers between 2 and 10000.
profit motive and increasing cost of production under monopolization. video games are designed and created by technical artists whose goal is to create art to express emotional and narrative truths. however microactivisblizzony is run by business school vat-grown executives whose sole responsibility is to create maximum profit for shareholders. mathematically the correct choice for them is to spend sixty trillion dollars creating one game with the greatest chance to sell twenty copies to each human on the planet so they greenlight a team extraction shooter moba with photorealistic graphics since that was the last most profitable game that came out. the developers would rather be making something interesting but it takes time and money to do research and development to create new gameplay systems. this is why the only big budget experimental gameplay systems come from valve, a private company without shareholders, and nintendo, a very secretive japanese company with 150 years of company culture. independents are also doing innovations in gameplay systems but mostly they can't do photorealistic graphics so they don't get press coverage.
>>731015980There's no money in it, it's tough on hardware while you increase polygon count excessively, and normies are transfixed by graphics and "cinema" more than they are by gameplay mechanics.
>>731015980The game dev cycle is bloated and standardized. Too many parasites and uninspired cogs involved to make anything cool anymore.
>>731015980Elden Ring was way too fucking big already.I don't want larger games, I want tighter games.
>>731015980i was always wondering that too.You got some great graphic updates and what not real shadows but what about the actual level designe, the world map, the dungeouns. When i was young, i thought one day they will make a Lufia 2 with a bigger world map and more towns and dungeons.
>>731015980>Why is the scope or interactive detail of games not increasing?Because both devs and normalfags would rather focus on high fidelity visuals.
>>731017494>Because none of that has anything to do with gameplay
it's about attention to detail, not size and graphicsa game with a lot of detail and fun gameplay is what we should be doingbut that's difficult so we just get photorealism slop to keep the goys impressed
>>731022912OP talks about interactive detail, yet the only trend we've seen is games like GTAV and Skyrim being LESS interactive with fewer moving parts compared to their predecessors
>>731023193I remember being angry I couldn't shut off my car's engine while indulging in autism in GTAV. Something which you could do I\in IV by holding down the exit vehicle button.
>>731015980games compete on the attention marketplace.your scale 1 to 1 Germany MMO with realistic animal distribution needing full time admin support is going to have isn't out competing games like Buckshot Roulette
>>731023931This will be the death of vidya
Because graphics sell and interaction doesn't
