It saddens me that no indie dev will ever attempt to make anything like this ever again, because it's not cost effective anymore. Why make a lengthy, story-driven RPG with cerebral gameplay and a branching story, when some gambling shitslop or a non-game chatroom for normalfags will make 1000x more money for x600 less effort?

Like, I can't blame indie devs for sticking to what actually sells in 2026 but still, damn man.
>>
>>731016381
Because neo-nu/v/ chuds out over anything narrative driven
>>
>>731016381
I thought a couple had or are doing that though. No I don't have the examples I just remember seeing some indie shit compared to it here but I don't remember the names.
>>
>>731016527
How many of them are actually out? None, because the projects crumbled under their own weight, simply because they're not viable to make anymore in the big 2026.
>>
>>731016381
The story doesn't even branch that much
You think it does but it really doesn't
you still end up doing the fucking bitch woirk from the start from UNATCO to Paul to Tong etc
You never make a relevant fucking story choice tioll the ending pick

there's like a billion fucking indie imsims out there, steam has tons of em. i swear to god every single time i hear someone complain about "ermmm why doesn't anyone make X genre???" i know for a fact that it's some retard that refuses to spend 5 seconds to type that genre name into steam because every fucking genre has a bunch of indie games trying to copy whatever game the developer likes

The point is you can do something like fucking BG3 and it's even 'deeper'
but you're the troll who constantly shits out cerebral gameplay so welcome back after your 3 days

Abiotic Factor is pretty close but is tragically hamstrung by open world survival crafting horseshit plus Zomboid personal upkeep on top. Nothing breaks the immersion more than getting an "I NEED MY DIAPIE CHANGED" notification from your not-Kleiner mid-sneaking.

Hey, OP, shitposting aside, let's talk about some actual games, since I like the premise of your thread.

There's Brigand: Oaxaca but it's honestly not very good. I got bored of it about halfway through. Somewhat neat concept but too sauceless. Definitely worth a try if you want to scrounge for games like Deus Ex, though. Might be more to your liking and there's not many options.

As for upcoming games, there's Core Decay and DEEP STATE. There's also Peripeteia, though by all accounts the levels in that one are too damn big and it will never get finished. That game was talked about a lot here, so there should be another anon that played it that happens by this thread, if I had to guess. He'd have more to share.

Also, on a similar note, there's this game inspired by System Shock called HELL OF FEAR: Mind Breach that I've been meaning to get to one of these days, but I haven't taken the plunge yet. Reviews are pretty good. Might be worth a look, friend.

Core Decay looks incredible but it's one single man heroically doing all the effort. It's gonna take as long as Routine to come out.

I don't want deus ex like games. I want good games inspired by it. I don't want goldeneye 007 like games. I don't want banjo kazooie like games. I don't want homages. Take a bit from here and there. Don't make a fucking simulator for what we still can play (and even buy, and mod in any way, and run in many platforms) right now.

>a branching story
The branching paths in this story are very rudimentary. Most of the branching is utterly inconsequential. It's shit like "do you want to kill this character now or have an additional encounter later where you kill them instead?", "this character is about to disappear from the story and they may either die or not die without much impact", and "endingtron 3000". I still commend the game for trying, but it's more of a "crawling so other games could run" situation.

Making an imsim but its set in japan (yes haha funny meme)
yOu play as a girl in a downtrodden tyrannical japan. theme is "normal life in extreme circumstances".
MC archetype is like a tsundere but it can be changed into others like derederes, kuuderes. you get bonuses and stuff based on what you choose. might change this later if it gets too tough to implement.
Chugging along but its going at a snails pace. got some modeling and dialogue writing done today atleast. got to nail down some japanese and learn their culture.
pic related is the vibe im going for.
>>
>>731019797
From what? Of all the games listed in these threads, only 2 are actually playable right now. Two. Unreleased games don't count as there's a very high chance they won't ever come out.
>>
>>731020091
Sounds more like a slice of life game. Also it will probably not be very insightful or authentic if you're not a nip

You have to believe that games aren't art, not to place roguelite and gacha RNG trends lower than multilayered, handcrafted, novel progression across a narrative. A lot of people are genuinely not smart enough to have formed for themselves a working definition of art, they can only argue recursively from an irrational position that is more so a reflexive subconscious instinct to protect the dopamine response they formed while playing BallxPit or whatever.
>>
>>731021725

>>731016507
bullshit, this board wont shut up about e33, a game that is mostly linear and talky talky
>>
>>731016381
the problem is that while you could just do another deus ex clone today, people won't be interested in another safe scifi story. it would need an completely outrageous, unacceptable political story that puts the developers on every police watchlist on earth.
>>
>>731023550
Just do Keir Starmer/British government in literally any other place (except Australia they're somehow worse) and you've got V for Vendetta tier gold. You can even call the civil enforcer Starmtroopers to not infringe on Star Wars IP so the mouse doesn't jew you out of profits.

I'm a bit concerned about that one. I'm good with the size of the levels, but the game itself has only seen updates for bugfixes and minor bullshit no one actually wants, and the devs haven't posted video updates of future levels in several months. They used to post them, but those eventually ceased.
Something's not right.

>26 people made the original Deus Ex
>we have never seen a game this good ever again made by an indie or AA team despite the fact that tech is way more advanced and it’s easier and more efficient to make games
>all of the indie attempts at immersive sims are dogshit, stuck in early access permanently, have less content and are shorter than Deus Ex, are less ambitious than Deus Ex, etc
Why?
What the fuck is WRONG with modern devs
Where is that drive to make the best game EVER

>>731024002
>Why?

OP puts it pretty well - why make a Deus Ex like that will sell like dogshit that will require an enormous amount effort to make, when you can make worthless garbage like megabonk or peak and rake in the big bux with FAAAAR less effort and money invested
>>
>>731024127
It’s sad. Indie games used to be about passion. Now it’s just as shitty and corporate as the AAA space. Everyone is making soulslike metroidvania roguelite deckbuilders and not actual good games

people don't want to admit but they always want a reward when putting effort in something, a game like this is very unlikely to get traction unless you hit the lottery
>>
>>731024107
Nope, it's some schizo who's pissed at the devs. The game has some really fucking weird ones around here: I once saw one of them get so pissed that he began fantasizing about kidnapping and mutilating one of the devs' kids mid-thread.
>>731023863
As much as I like the game, it seems like it's always been a mess technically even though that got a bit better over time. It's probably built on a mountain of absolutely horrible slavcode.
>>
>>731024274
the environmental pressure of social media kills passion projects, everyone wants some form of attention or validity for their effort even if it's a passion project, now if you're making a passion project you have to frequent social media and "post progress" often otherwise people will call your game dead or a scam, and also you get less algorithmic visibility if your game isn't chasing trendy topics, that's just how it is in this bitch life
>>
>>731024515
I think it's because they suspect the devs themselves were shilling the game. That somehow unhinges them more than that for-hire company of jeet shills.
