And all these areas do is just stretch out where the actual areas you want to be in are.The only saving grace of the GTA V map, is that it allows having actual highways and lets most non-jet aircraft feel almost right. Every GTA game has gimped vehicle speeds to cope with how the small the maps actually are because of hardware limitations, but this isn't as bad in GTA V because the map lets them get away with letting it be less extreme.
