i've been debating whether should I get started with Pokemon by playing the gameboy versions or the GBA remakesstarting with gen 1 seems the most logical choice, but don't know what to choose

Don't get me wrong, I consider the artstyle and chiptune soul sound of gen 1 to be irreplaceable, but it really should be played on a gameboy/gbc. The original game doesn't hold up well without the portability aspect in my opinion, and the added features and balance differences do add to the game. If you do have a chance to play red/blue on the original hardware (or just buy a gameboy color + EZflash jr for 56$ on amazon) You can always buy an advance. Actually I take all of that back, the Virtual Console ports on 3DS were decent (and SUPER pirateable because of how easy it is to jailbreak a 3DS these days) The GBA remakes look good emulated even on a computer. I'm jealous you get to pray da monsta collectin gaem for the first time. Don't LOOK ANYTHING UP AT ALL btw just go with your gut that first play through. don't even look up the version differences just pick your favorite color out of Red/blue (though if you do play the OG just go with yellow at that point, more features)
