wouldn't mind some detective/puzzle recs. I have played and enjoyed:
>case of the golden idol
>obra dinn
>ace attorney franchise
>zero escape (mostly the first game)
>void stranger
>animal well
>of the devil demo (don't want to get it piecemeal)
>blue prince demo
>the drifter demo (though I don't know how much puzzling this will have)
>who's lila
>hotel dusk
didn't like
>danganronpa
>>
I really liked these games, the only downside is that they're like 2 hours long which might not be a bad thing if you just want to play and finish a game in an afternoon.

Correct. I dont even care its David Cage. This one is good.

if you like ace attorney you might like nina aquila. it's not great or anything but an entertaining enough ace attorney clone when it's on sale.

it's pretty different from the games on your list i think but the operator was pretty fun. you work for a three letter agency and investigate evidence sent to you by agents in the field. short game but I think there's going to be a sequel.

the wolf among us is a great adventure game but I don't think there are many puzzles, if there are any at all.

Tacoma has similar mechanics to Obra Dinn where you're piecing together a narrative based on some recordings, but there isn't really any puzzle solving/deduction. Again, this one isn't great but it regularly goes on sale for $2-$3 and at that price it's entertaining enough. the shortest game on this list though.

Surely steam is scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one.
There's maybe one good detective game every couple of years. Shit LA Noire is still being advertised.

There's what 5 or so games that are good?
Shadows of Doubt (2023)
Blue Prince (2025)
Obra Dinn (2018)
LA Noire (2011)
The Case of the Golden Idol (2022)

Maybe pathologic series if you are into Russian jank.

That's about it.
>>
>>731037827
The Call of Cthulhu and Sherlock Holmes games are alright, the detective genre is 90% AA jank for the most part.

I don't know, I don't particularly trust weebs to write good stories plus this seems made by fat fetishists
> the operator
I think I played the demo of this, I enjoyed the gameplay but I think the demo ended with the 1337 hacker taking over your computer (if I'm not confusing it with another game) which felt a bit lame but maybe I need to give it another chance

>plus this seems made by fat fetishists
that's what i thought at first but after playing it i think it's the blue haired crowd that wants fatty representation.
the artist is inconsistent though. in most of the ingame art nina just looks chubby. i think the pic you posted is the fattest version of her.
but like i said it's not a great game. just suggested it in case you were feeling desperate for anything since you've already played most of the good games.

I think you should give it another chance.

You can drop Roottrees and just play the free version on Itch which is almost exactly the same

I'm too retarded for Idol.

How is the Rootrees game?
>>
>>731041584
I wanted to play it on my Steam Deck though
>>
>>731041782
The game needs a lot of typing and you don't want to do that on a Deck
>>
>>731034453
I also second what >>731041584 >>731042023 says. The game is like Her Story. It's 99% typing into a box. Definitely not a controller game.
>>
>>731033383
I'm about two hours in, and I have a feeling it's going to lean more heavily into the "cozy" life sim stuff more than it's going to lean into the detective stuff. Hopefully the game manages to hook me in, despite it not actually being what I was looking for.
>>
>>731042023
>>731042162
thanks for the heads up, i'll return roottrees in that case.
>>
>>731042292
Roottress is the best game on the list, and the itch version is a bad version.
>>
>>731033315
The big problem with the "detective game" label on Steam is that there's no effort to differentiate between "a game where the core mechanic is an abstraction of detective work," and "any random ass game where the main character happens to be a mechanic." When I go looking for a "detective game," it's because I want something like Obra Dinn or Golden Idol, NOT Batman Arkham or fucking The Wolf Among Us, which is barely a goddamn game at all, much less a "detective game."
>>
>>731042417

Yeah the mystery solving isn't super deep or complex or anything like that, but the card-based case solving is at least charming to play in and of itself and unique in the genre. I liken the detective portions to be a lot like Shenmue in that regard (minus the cards of course). I still think the whole package is worthy of a playthrough though at least to see the details the devs put into the game
>>
>>731042909
that's just not true
>>
Drew Crew which game should I start the series with? I've already watched jerma play through the train one and the spooky ghost manor one.
>>
Is there anything remotely similar to Shadows of Doubt because I want to actually look around, gathering evidence and cross-referencing the way I see fit
>>
>>731044007
Obra Dinn
>>
I'm playing Case of the Golden Idol right now and I just realized that Lazarus Herst is Edmund Cloudsley. Also, case XI from Chapter 4 is hard as fuck, I might give in and use the hints for the first time.
>>
>>731041749
It's genuinely very good, also pretty woke but not enough to completely ruin the experience. Your job is researching family trees, and you're asked to put together the family tree for a big, rich family. And you simply use a computer to look up articles and piece it together.

For example, you find out one of them is a singer. So you look up their artist name. You find a music magazine that wrote a story on them. You learn the album name and look that up. You listen to the album on soundcloud and learn more clues.
>>
>>731042292
Other anon is right, Roottrees is the best game (or second best behind Blue Prince) in your cart. The steam version is superior and has a free expansion
>>
>>731044869
The DLCs for both games are often even harder. It's fun though
>>
>>731044869
>I might give in and use the hints for the first time.
never mind, I figured it out on my own. I can't believe fucking Peter of all people managed to kill him

LA Noire would fit you better.
>>
I'm probably gonna buy Mystery of the Malign, some guy on /v/ has reccommended it a couple times now. I'm just looking for games that actually give you the feeling of solving something, not ones where the mystery gets solved with or without your participation

Puzzle Agent is very good. It's basically a Professor Layton game, except the cartoonish thriller story is quite engaging compared to the dogshit Layton plots

>obra dinn
nigga you NEED to play picrel. yes, it's a chinese game, but somehow it isn't slop, and the voice acting and set-ups for cases are GREAT. The premise is similar to Golden Idol, but instead of seeing the last moment of the scene, you can listen to the entire scene take place, but only in audio and piece together who is who. Super fun to figure out. Even the tutorial case is kino.
some others you might enjoy:
Murders on the Yangtze River
City of Voices

The Tex Murphy games.
For some reason, the bundle isn't on sale, but the individual games are at a ridiculous discount.
>>
>>731041749

If you can't handle idol you won't be able to handle roottrees.
>>
>>731039738
The l33t haxx0r is key to the plot and you will work with them a lot.
The plot is kinda generic but the game is actually pretty polished, no jank. Short though.
Also the sound design is pretty good too.

To bad Puzzle Agent two was such dog shit. Felt like they abandoned the entire thing 20 minutes into it, but for some reason were contractually obliged to continue writing at least 40 more puzzles.

>I'm just looking for games that actually give you the feeling of solving something
Yeah, I look for that feeling as well and I think Mystery of the Malign did a pretty good job with that. It doesn't really hold your hand too much

Any detective games where you actually play detective and get to solve crimes instead of just progressing a linear story with game checkpoints?
I legit want an actual detective experience.
>>
>>731052629
Shadows of Doubt is probably your platonic ideal.
>>
>>731052604
is riven good? I played myst for like 15 minutes before turning it off
>>
>>731052629
Shadows of Doubt I guess. Though the crimes themselves are pretty shallow since it's all procedurally generated without a lot of variety. So you end up reading the same notes/emails/motivations over and over. But it's still pretty fun even when the novelty wears off
>>
>>731052824
I played both of the remakes last year; Myst is a steaming pile of shit and Riven is one of the greatest games I've ever played.
