What detective ludokinos should I purchase?
You should try/play On Your TailIt's really cozy and you can tell it was made with a lot of passion and love
>>731033383>you can tell it was made with a lot of passion and loveyou're right
not a puzzle game but I'm playing mosaic of the pharaohs and its simply _________fun_________
I only wanted to spend $50 but I ended up with $100 worth of games in my cart and I could only trim it down to $68.
>>731033315
wouldn't mind some detective/puzzle recs. I have played and enjoyed:>case of the golden idol>obra dinn>ace attorney franchise>zero escape (mostly the first game) >void stranger>animal well>of the devil demo (don't want to get it piecemeal)>blue prince demo>the drifter demo (though I don't know how much puzzling this will have)>who's lila>hotel duskdidn't like>danganronpa
I really liked these games, the only downside is that they're like 2 hours long which might not be a bad thing if you just want to play and finish a game in an afternoon.https://store.steampowered.com/app/2637990/Duck_Detective_The_Secret_Salami/https://store.steampowered.com/app/2714620/Duck_Detective_The_Ghost_of_Glamping/?curator_clanid=35570796 Third game when
Contradiction
>>731035560Correct. I dont even care its David Cage. This one is good.
>>731035942if you like ace attorney you might like nina aquila. it's not great or anything but an entertaining enough ace attorney clone when it's on sale. it's pretty different from the games on your list i think but the operator was pretty fun. you work for a three letter agency and investigate evidence sent to you by agents in the field. short game but I think there's going to be a sequel. the wolf among us is a great adventure game but I don't think there are many puzzles, if there are any at all. Tacoma has similar mechanics to Obra Dinn where you're piecing together a narrative based on some recordings, but there isn't really any puzzle solving/deduction. Again, this one isn't great but it regularly goes on sale for $2-$3 and at that price it's entertaining enough. the shortest game on this list though.>>731036825Was this guy in the shapeshifting detective?
>>731036890>Was this guy in the shapeshifting detective?Yes! That's Rupert Booth!
>>731036970He's very expressive, I like him.
>>731033907The highly intriguing mystery of... goat ass
Surely steam is scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one. There's maybe one good detective game every couple of years. Shit LA Noire is still being advertised. There's what 5 or so games that are good?Shadows of Doubt (2023)Blue Prince (2025)Obra Dinn (2018)LA Noire (2011)The Case of the Golden Idol (2022)Maybe pathologic series if you are into Russian jank. That's about it.
>>731037827The Call of Cthulhu and Sherlock Holmes games are alright, the detective genre is 90% AA jank for the most part.
>>731036890>nina aquilaI don't know, I don't particularly trust weebs to write good stories plus this seems made by fat fetishists> the operatorI think I played the demo of this, I enjoyed the gameplay but I think the demo ended with the 1337 hacker taking over your computer (if I'm not confusing it with another game) which felt a bit lame but maybe I need to give it another chance
>>731039738>plus this seems made by fat fetishiststhat's what i thought at first but after playing it i think it's the blue haired crowd that wants fatty representation. the artist is inconsistent though. in most of the ingame art nina just looks chubby. i think the pic you posted is the fattest version of her. but like i said it's not a great game. just suggested it in case you were feeling desperate for anything since you've already played most of the good games. >the operatorI think you should give it another chance.
>>731034453You can drop Roottrees and just play the free version on Itch which is almost exactly the same
I'm too retarded for Idol. How is the Rootrees game?
>>731041584I wanted to play it on my Steam Deck though
>>731041782The game needs a lot of typing and you don't want to do that on a Deck
>>731034453I also second what >>731041584 >>731042023 says. The game is like Her Story. It's 99% typing into a box. Definitely not a controller game.
>>731033383I'm about two hours in, and I have a feeling it's going to lean more heavily into the "cozy" life sim stuff more than it's going to lean into the detective stuff. Hopefully the game manages to hook me in, despite it not actually being what I was looking for.
>>731042023>>731042162thanks for the heads up, i'll return roottrees in that case.
>>731042292Roottress is the best game on the list, and the itch version is a bad version.
>>731033315The big problem with the "detective game" label on Steam is that there's no effort to differentiate between "a game where the core mechanic is an abstraction of detective work," and "any random ass game where the main character happens to be a mechanic." When I go looking for a "detective game," it's because I want something like Obra Dinn or Golden Idol, NOT Batman Arkham or fucking The Wolf Among Us, which is barely a goddamn game at all, much less a "detective game."
>>731042417i understand your point but>fucking The Wolf Among Us, which is barely a goddamn game at all, much less a "detective game."you shut your whore mouth
>>731042829>Anon won't remember that...>because not a single one of your goddamn choices matters for shit
>>731042235Yeah the mystery solving isn't super deep or complex or anything like that, but the card-based case solving is at least charming to play in and of itself and unique in the genre. I liken the detective portions to be a lot like Shenmue in that regard (minus the cards of course). I still think the whole package is worthy of a playthrough though at least to see the details the devs put into the game
>>731042909that's just not true
Drew Crew which game should I start the series with? I've already watched jerma play through the train one and the spooky ghost manor one.
Is there anything remotely similar to Shadows of Doubt because I want to actually look around, gathering evidence and cross-referencing the way I see fit
>>731044007Obra Dinn
I'm playing Case of the Golden Idol right now and I just realized that Lazarus Herst is Edmund Cloudsley. Also, case XI from Chapter 4 is hard as fuck, I might give in and use the hints for the first time.
>>731041749It's genuinely very good, also pretty woke but not enough to completely ruin the experience. Your job is researching family trees, and you're asked to put together the family tree for a big, rich family. And you simply use a computer to look up articles and piece it together. For example, you find out one of them is a singer. So you look up their artist name. You find a music magazine that wrote a story on them. You learn the album name and look that up. You listen to the album on soundcloud and learn more clues.
>>731042292Other anon is right, Roottrees is the best game (or second best behind Blue Prince) in your cart. The steam version is superior and has a free expansion
>>731044869The DLCs for both games are often even harder. It's fun though
>>731044869>I might give in and use the hints for the first time.never mind, I figured it out on my own. I can't believe fucking Peter of all people managed to kill him
>>731033383LA Noire would fit you better.
I'm probably gonna buy Mystery of the Malign, some guy on /v/ has reccommended it a couple times now. I'm just looking for games that actually give you the feeling of solving something, not ones where the mystery gets solved with or without your participation
The Epilogue was pretty easy after that last case>>731045712Well it looks like I have a lot to look forward to. $40 seems like a bit much to finish the collection desu but the first game was really good
Puzzle Agent is very good. It's basically a Professor Layton game, except the cartoonish thriller story is quite engaging compared to the dogshit Layton plots
>>731035942>case of the golden idol>obra dinnnigga you NEED to play picrel. yes, it's a chinese game, but somehow it isn't slop, and the voice acting and set-ups for cases are GREAT. The premise is similar to Golden Idol, but instead of seeing the last moment of the scene, you can listen to the entire scene take place, but only in audio and piece together who is who. Super fun to figure out. Even the tutorial case is kino.some others you might enjoy:Murders on the Yangtze RiverCity of Voices
>>731036825this game was fucking DOGSHIT. name 1 quality it had.
>>731045520what's so woke about it? i played and discovered the first couple characters, but and didn't notice anything
Can't believe no one has mentioned The Seance of Blake Manor yet. It's great.https://store.steampowered.com/app/1395520/The_Sance_of_Blake_Manor/
>>731033315Gemini Rue
>>731048336my worry with small asian games is spotty translation, but if they got competent voice acting, I'm guessing they also have a competent translation. Hadn't heard any of these, I'll check them out
>>731033315The Tex Murphy games. For some reason, the bundle isn't on sale, but the individual games are at a ridiculous discount.
>>731041749If you can't handle idol you won't be able to handle roottrees.
>>731039738The l33t haxx0r is key to the plot and you will work with them a lot.The plot is kinda generic but the game is actually pretty polished, no jank. Short though. Also the sound design is pretty good too.
>>731035942Umineko
>>731050415Wtf
>>731050631ive considered reading the manga
>>731048426>name 1 quality it had.absolutely KINO FMV scenes and a fun 'find the contradiction' system of gameplay
>>731051095That's fine. The manga has exclusive content the game does not. You miss out on the soundtrack, though, which is the best part of the VN.
>>731043775Couple years ago I just played through a bunch of them in release order and had a pretty good time.
>>731047206To bad Puzzle Agent two was such dog shit. Felt like they abandoned the entire thing 20 minutes into it, but for some reason were contractually obliged to continue writing at least 40 more puzzles.
>>731046108>I'm just looking for games that actually give you the feeling of solving somethingYeah, I look for that feeling as well and I think Mystery of the Malign did a pretty good job with that. It doesn't really hold your hand too much
>>731048946I bounced off this, played about 3 hours and found it very boring. Maybe I'll try again, I really wanted to like it. Same with Enigma of Fear.
>>731048336>>731049939I just checked my notes from when I played Unheard a few years ago:>Like if they removed the playbar highlighting from brain dances in Cyberpunk 2077 and also made them take 15 minutes.
I enjoyed this demo https://store.steampowered.com/app/3388650/Locator_Demo/ first area is baby mode, second area you actually have to think to figure out the location of each photo
Any detective games where you actually play detective and get to solve crimes instead of just progressing a linear story with game checkpoints?I legit want an actual detective experience.
>>731052629Shadows of Doubt is probably your platonic ideal.
>>731052604is riven good? I played myst for like 15 minutes before turning it off
>>731052629Shadows of Doubt I guess. Though the crimes themselves are pretty shallow since it's all procedurally generated without a lot of variety. So you end up reading the same notes/emails/motivations over and over. But it's still pretty fun even when the novelty wears off
>>731052824I played both of the remakes last year; Myst is a steaming pile of shit and Riven is one of the greatest games I've ever played.
>>731052910>remakesew
>>731033383
shadows of doubt got abandoned, right? worth the current price anyways? i like the general concept a lot.
>>731054482I think it's really worth it on sale. It's amazing conceptually, just the fact that they did so much with the concept of procedural mysteries. Honestly it feels amazing for the first few hours. It's when you get past that point and realize that's ALL the game has to offer you that it becomes a bit of a chore.
>>731054482Tough question. It doesn't live up to it's potential and is still pretty buggy but I think you'll probably get $12 worth of enjoyment out of it at least
>>731054916>>731054919sounds like i'll probably end up just biting the bullet and getting it now, every time i see it on sale i think about buying it.
Playing Hotel Dusk on the DS. The presentation is excellent, but the traditional adventure game gameplay is infuriating and the story seems to be going nowhere. Does anything ever happen?
>>731055051Yes
>>731055051>the story seems to be going nowhere. Does anything ever happen?Nope. Not in the slightest to be quite honest with you.>>731055221Anon! Don't lie to him, he doesn't know any better.
This thread keeps getting made, and the exact same posts keep popping up. A detective game is not the same thing as a game about a detective.
I finished Seance of Blake Manor today, it was pretty good
>>731055051Not useful feedback, but I had both that and Another Code as a child. I played Hotel Dusk for maybe an hour. But played Another Code to completion twice and I still remember the first ending I got (it made me cry)
Is anyone here from the /b/ gifting threads?
R8, ignore the chink games if you can't read ching chong since there's no english translation
>>731052629LA Noire
>>731048469>what's so woke about it?the big secret is someone got cut out of the family for being a fag and also one of them is a race traitor
>>731055739Seems fine to meAssuming you can read chinese, the Case Cracker series might be worth a look if you don't mind lots of reading. The eng translation isn't the best (but is apparently going to be updated when the 3rd one comes out) but I'd presume the original language is a better experience
>>731055943NTAYRT, but this shit was so eye-roll inducing. Especially because the client that hired you just starts preaching at you about how she wants to get revenge on this old white rich family for this HEINOUS crime that happened way back when being a fag was almost jail-worthy, and that most of the family wasn't even aware was happening. On top of that, the fact that she cared THIS much during 1998 when being a huge fag was still relatively undesirable just queued me off that this basedujack wannabe was virtue signaling.
>tfw Ace Attorney discount ran out before the fest has endedThat's bullshit. I was planning to buy either The Great Ace or Apollo Justice (already got Phoenix Wright). But while we're at it, which trilogy or duology is better?
Has anyone tried Detective Instinct? Looks like a cute Famicom Detective Club clone.
>>731035942>of the devilEpisode 1 is good, and much longer than the free prologue.Episode 2 is better than Episode 1 overall, BUT some of the anime references were more blatant and obnoxious.
>>731056658TGAA is the peak of the series IMO
>>731056658great is my favourite
