I played the first game on PSP to try and get into this series and it was a complete clusterfuck with a nonsensical translation. The combat was interesting conceptually with having to move units in position, sort of like a souped up CT, but as far as I got (having to backtrack all the way to the starting village for the 4th time) it never really moved further. Are the later games any better about it? Are the translations decent?

>>731047270>no microtransactionsAre we going to pretend that Falcom "DLC" doesn't fit microtransaction design to a T. Sky 1st had like 20 different DLCs dedicated solely to giving you consumable/material items in game for the sake of getting ahead of the jrpg curve.

>>731047079This is literally the oldest JRPG series in existence.
>>731047576idkLike in normal and easy these games are braindead...who would even buy it? And it is less predatory than in other games that have the words DLC shining or in bold to remind you to buy it.

>>731045381Yeah, big mistake. I bet you one of the two games will be in your top 3
>>731044783I played tokyo xanadu ex and if the dialogue in trails is as nonsensical as in that game in not touching the trails series, I will stick to just YS
>>731048105Both of them? I can get hating Azure but Zero is pretty good.
>>731048232Well my issue was that I didn't really care about the cast. Crossbell by far has my least favourite cast in the series.
>>731047692It's not as bad as it could be but that doesn't make it not bad. I like the series but I just can't say in good conscience that Falcom doesn't try to milk their customers with useless DLC.
>>731048105Heard you talking shit
>>731048292Funnily enough I only started liking Lloyd from his appearance in Cold Steel and hated him in his own games.
>>731047576Depends a little on how you define DLC and microtransactions I guess, but IMO the big difference between the two is that DLC is a one-time purchase that you literally cannot rebuy once owned while a microtransaction is something you can rebuy multiple times (and doing so is often encouraged by the game). I'm sure there are other subtleties to it, but in my brain that's how I separate the two categories. What's a more interesting discussion is how people differentiate between DLC and an expansion packs. AFAIK the only differentiating factor is that DLC is always a digital purchase while an expansion pack used to (but not always) come on a physical medium..?
>>731048278Really? I'm pretty neutral on Lloyd but I really like the whole group's dynamic. It's more like a family and the fact that like a couple hours in they're making food for each other and hanging out is comfy as shit.Probably why I like the Calvard cast too and I find the Cold Steel cast a little cold.
>>731048526>and I find the Cold Steel cast a little cold.A little cold steel perhaps?
I played the MTL a year ago. How long do you think it'll be until people hit the end game and we can start talking about the real shit?I liked the ending but I'm curious what the consensus will be.
>>731048526I think Daybreak honestly did that aspect way better. It felt contrived in the Crossbell games and didn't feel organic to me. I also think in terms of them as individual characters they're the worst by a mile. I don't think there's even one single Crossbell character who would even make it into an above average rank in how I feel about the characters.
>>731048703I'm glad anies is dead via suicide but I know she'll be brought back
>>731042935Is this just another turn-based X niggas in a row?
>>731048421Strictly speaking the DLC could be called a microtransaction but I do see what you mean. It still rubs me the wrong way though that the complete or ultimate or whatever edition of Kai is $180 and that's including the launch discount. The version with all costumes and no consumables is still $130 or so. The game is currently $60 so Falcom charges more than the game itself for all the costumes and that's the discounted bundle price too.tl;dr the DLC isn't infinitely purchasable but Falcom definitely milks players in a similar manner to MTX games and I don't like ignoring that.
>>731048773why are you glad about that?agnes is a good girl
>>731048881If you removed her from the plot and just had the genesis shipped to Van with a note nothing would change except a lack of "ahaha"s
>>731048421>differentiate between DLC and an expansion packsAn "expansion pack" is arguably an archaic term that has been replaced by "DLC" almost entirely. Expansion packs were more common in the 90s to early 00s because downloading large chunks of content wasn't very viable before broadband connections became mainstream, which took a LONG time in some countries.Since selling an expansion pack required the buyer to visit a store, buy a physical thing, return home, and install it, expansion packs were often bigger to entice the buyer but tended to cost more.Another large factor is that consoles which didn't really have much of an "expansion pack"-culture because saving anything to your console wasn't a thing. You had memory cards to save your progress but that was usually it. Expanding content couldn't really be done if the content wasn't saved locally and since most game discs were not rewritable (at least not by the user) you essentially couldn't expand on it.That all changed with the PS3/360 which came with harddrives to save on, but since internet was getting better now and consoles didn't have the culture, DLC became the norm instead.
>>731048929the game would also be a lot less cute, sexy, funny and devoid of a very good girl
>>731048929They already did that in FC. They can't just reuse the story beats exactly.
Cold Steel had the best region, best characters, best protag and the best girls.
>>731049060This but unironically. Erebonia especially mogs every other region by far.
>>731049004>They can't just reuse the story beats exactly.Haha... Except when they did
>>731048750Oh Daybreak absolutely did it way better but that game wasn't out when I played Crossbell. Might be rose tinted glasses on my part cause it felt like Sky and Crossbell were games made with heart compared to "stick a harem in it, otakus love harems" mentality for Cold Steel.I do like the individual characters in Crossbell in how they connect to other arcs and the world as a whole but they are kind of weak. Nowhere near a weak as the cast bloat we get in Cold Steel though. I deeply regret romancing Emma in the first game where she takes a backseat in what should be her niche to two other characters by the third game.
>>731049060Truth nukem
>>731049060>>731049089Erebonia is too big for it's own good.
>>731049060Kino...
>>731048829Yeah I can respect your perspective. And I agree, it feels like they really do want every dime they can get from every person, but devil's advocate: they kinda have to. It's practically impossible to grow an audience on games as tightly linked as this because you can't (or shouldn't) just jump right into Reverie (for example). You are expected to play all the games that came before the latest one which is one hell of an ask considering there's a thousand of them and they're not exactly short games either. That means that your audience is most likely shrinking over time, not growing, meaning that the people who are left have to encouraged to pay more if they want the series to keep going.I still agree with you though, it's cheap, but from a business perspective, I get it.
>>731049247That's what makes it kino.
>>731049060I'd give Cold Steel so much more credit if it wasn't for the Curse. In Sky I was like "Wow, the Erebonians sure seem comically evil. I wonder what deeper political struggles led to that outcome.".And Kondo was like "An evil wizard did it.".
>>731049187Well you say that but I even liked the Cold Steel cast more. In fact I'd say with very few exceptions like Elliot and Giaus I'd say every single character in Cold Steel is better than the best Crossbell character. They just felt way better established in the world and with those around them. When playing CS1 I loved going to see each party member at their respective clubs with their own NPC friends and see that they had their own lives going on that had nothing to do with the main plot. They were just people in the world and honestly in that aspect CS is probably the best.
man sky 3's OST is probably the best in the franchise. the more mystical sounding themes were always top notch, and sky 3 is basically filled to the brim with them thanks to the settinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxTlZANa_lUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgFpDnECTgshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeIakAdgk9w
>>731049362Da Kurse made me shoot the king and I'm not liable for it
>>731049423Some of the students had great storylines.Alisa finally becoming friends with Ferris.Patrick everything.Fie gardening club.Klein tutoring the kid and helping his parents make up.Mint hooking up Makarov and Mary.Haven't played all the games yet but CS1 definitely has my favorite npc stories.
>>731049247Calvard is bigger yet we have seen way less which is hilarious.
>>731049584Mint's cute lil butt
>>731049423Did you do all the bonding events in CS1?I didn't, and I keep thinking that might've soured my experience for the whole arc. Like Machius is barely a character for me. I know he didn't like Jusis for 5 minutes at the start of CS1, he likes coffee and I think he's in the chess club. There probably is more depth but I never did a single bonding event with him.Likewise I enjoy Elliot quite a bit but that might be because I did all of his bonding events and he was my goto healslut.
>>731049630Still find it crazy Mint is in more games than 90% of Class VII.Not complaining, just funny as hell.
>>731049631I did the full talk to literally every single NPC between every single main story beat to see what changed. I stopped doing that after CS3 cause holy fuck they can be too long.
>>731049631It is morally correct to cheat in infinite bonding points.
>>731049797bonding points is such a dumb system. it's like they saw social links in persona and tried to copy it but fucked it entirely.
>>731049884They were fine if not for them pointlessly limiting how many you could do. Like there really was literally zero reason you couldn't do all of them.
>>731049884Yeah, getting max social links is usually pretty feasible, especially in the newer games. CS just doesn't have that. You get a much better experience by just having infinite bonding points. Not even sure why they made it limited.
>>731049769I also did every NPC until CS3 and picked it up again for Daybreak. Something about the map getting huge fucked with me.I don't think I started save scumming bonding events until CS3 though. I think my thought process was "The bonding events are optional, there probably isn't anything critical in there." Well there was. So glad I was save scumming for all the events when I played Kai last year. So many of those are absolutely not optional. There are several NPCs I care more about in those games compared to characters with bonding events.
>>731050056Yeah I didn't have too much of an issue since I'm a completionist and have played every single game in the series at minimum twice for all the achievements so I did end up seeing all the bond events but seeing them outside of their initial context made some of them not hit the same. As other anons said the bond system in CS was beyond retarded.
>>731049962I think the idea is that you're supposed to replay the game, at least in 2's casefor those fucking records/spoiler]
>>731049279Yeah, that's how it is for DLC. We know they have to do it to remain profitable and hit estimates or please shareholders or whatever. As far as I know Falcom only has Ys and Trails to their name and their full time employees have to get paid somehow. I just can't trust that companies will be using their DLC earnings for the sake of their employees. But we have no choice but to trust them. The alternative is piracy and when I know that I am the type to buy my games if possible, I know that I would be a lost sale, the kind companies always doompost about. And I've seen what lack of sales can do to a company, when one I really liked called imageepoch (who made 7th Dragon III and Stella Glow, generic ass fantasy RPGs but I still loved them) went under several years back.I just wish we could find the line between reasonably priced DLC and comfortable profit for companies. I don't know where the line is but I don't believe cosmetics should cost more than the actual game.
>>731049884>>731050124I'm just baffled they're still fucking it up.After finished Kai last year I remember reading a Kondo interview where he was like "Yeah, that one bonding event really should've been part of the main plot.".Like how are you still shooting yourself in the foot with this system?
>>731050382people love their vapid "pick your waifu" slop even when it is basically always a detriment to the game itself
>>731050423That's a completely seperate thing though. You're not talking about the limited bond event choice. You can have the option to see every bond event(or just not have bond events in the first place and integrate them into the story) and still have the ability to pick your waifu at the end. The 2 aren't mutually exclusive.
>>731050480the cold steel games tie the pick your waifu stuff TO bond points though, that's how you choose your waifu, by maxing their bond. I won't speak for the new games because I'm on Reverie
>>731050213Agreed. We are of like mind Anon.
>>731050558Yes but as I just said they're separate things. There's nothing to say that the ability to chose your waifu requires limited bond events. There's zero justification for it when it's just objectively shit game design.
