Do you like it when a game challanges you intellectually?
>>
Imagine forcing one of these redditor metroid"brania" faggots to complete a zachtronics game. Or fuck even just factorio.

A dumb attempt to name the genre, and questionable examples of challenge. mass market games of previous eras outdo modern games. Pic somewhat related. It's Ultima from the 80's, not even trying to be a challenge.

I've completed all three and love them all.
>>
>>731057258
Why are you trying to make them exclusive. I loved Spacechem and Factorio and also liked figuring the super puzzle-ish parts of tunic and Fez. Why are you guys such obnoxious faggots about everything?

>Look up to see if anon is baiting with the stupid forced genre name
>Several videos about it

"Puzzle Game" gets the job done just fine if the game heavily revolves around those mechanics, and even then puzzles are classic elements of several established genres already so you don't even need to use that specific of a phrase if you don't want to. Also haven't thought about Antichamber in years, love that game. Might have to replay it now.

I got pretty far into Antichamber I think but forgot to pick it back up after switching to a new computer, love the style/atmosphere
>>
>>731057775
Antichamber does, it's an open world that hardlocks progress at certain areas unless you get specific skill/ability upgrades.

What I don't like is incremental knowledge spread in a big world so you get stuck somewhere thinking you can figure out something but actually you can't. And if you brute force something then you're in trouble because there's another puzzle down the road based on the same logic that you didn't understand.
>>
>>731057978
Are you fucking real I don't remember antichamber being open world. Convoluted, non euclidian and non linear yeah.
>>
>>731058524
Open world as much as an Igavania castle at least.
>>
>>731058657
Can't we call these open levels instead of worlds? When you say world I'm thinking something giganormous like san andreas.

>Trying to corrupt the -vania part of the name when Metroidvanias were just Castlevanias that played like Metroid games, so it's just a pointless addition when not referring to Castlevania games
>Over half of the current Metroid games don't even really play like Metroid games anymore, so the Metroid- part of it is also useless and tells people nothing
>Metroid itself is just a word-corruption of Metro + Android and basically just means "like a metropolitan railway"
The only genre name dumber than Metroidvania is Metroidbrainia.
We're ending this farce now and calling them Tube-likes.

>>
>>731057258
I tried to get into all of those games repeatedly but can't, it's not like I can't solve them it's that I get literally 0 dopamine from solving any single problem in the game and all I can think about is how the game is nothing but a series of more complicated similar problems and lose all will to play.

where do you go from here? I tried myst (original) and thought it was stupid, is riven (original or remake better)?
>>
>>731061260
The Witness, maybe? It doesn't explain anything, the mechanics are introduced via puzzles.
>>
Maybe I'm not knowledgeable or smart but I really hate when games just want me to "figure it out". Tunic did it alot, no dialog, no pointers, very little if any hints, etc. It just isn't an engaging experience to me, it's boring. I don't want to bang my head against a wall 10000 times trying to figure out a puzzle that I don't even know the rules to?
>>
>>731061454
isnt it just a collection of maze puzzles?
>>
>>731061463
>Tunic did it a lot
it literally gives you pages from a manual that specifically writes what you need to know in english. It only starts getting even slightly vague once you reach the second half of the game.
>>
>>731057175
I think this is an ill fit because the puzzles are often linear and lack replayability, and also spacing them out in a casual platformer where you have to walk between them is fucking stupid. At least stuff like outer wilds and obra dinn are kind of a non-linear direct evolution over adventure games. And it's curious that mulana is absent from this genre, wonder why that is.
>>
>>731061558
I haven't played the game since it came out. I remember the manual but don't remember it being in english at all but made up language for the game.

I did enjoy Tunic overall. Though I never played it, that one Jonathan Blow game the Witness, I could never understand what people were doing in that game. If I saw it in a video or webm or whatever, I could never tell or understand why the players were doing what they were doing or why it worked.
>>
>>731061554
Like I said, it somewhat fits the genre because the rules are never explained, you have to figure them out via sets tutorial puzzles. The game's map is structured in a way that you are guaranteed to encounter symbols before they are explained in a more distant area.
>>
>>731057175
Not a fan of most puzzle games, I get no satisfaction out of solving them. Especially when there is only one solution. Doesn't feel like there is room to be "skillful".
>>
>tee hee metroidBRAINia I love THINKING and solving PUZZLES! red key in red hole!!!

Yeah, it's a puzzle game.
You learn how to solve the puzzles by playing the game, but all the puzzles are line-drawing variants.

Didn't Blow fund Tunic, and also regret funding it? I remember watching him play it and he didn't enjoy it.

The whole point of the random Search Action part being thrown in is because you're supposed to learn about mechanics that were always present but unknown to you, like the vanishing blocks in Antichamber or the ATP in Outer Wilds

Blue Prince is a pretty good take on the Dinn-like
