It's the only good kind of turn based combat at least as far as JRPGs go. Anything that resembles paper mario or M&L is unironically more engaging than the average jrpg, and despite Expedition 33's many faults, its gameplay elevates it above the trash. And that's with it being a simple simon says parry game. The strategy, preparation and tactics many people like to associate with the genre have simply never existed in the majority of the games they praise. The litmus test is to ask someone what they think about Pokémon, unironically. If they think it's an easy or shallow game compared to let's say SMT it's because they never actually played multiplayer/competitive where strategy and tactics matter far more than in their controlled singleplayer environment with no real variable.

When you ask jarpig shitters to play REAL turn-based strategy games (RPG mechanics stripped away or kept to a minimum) they seethe becaude they can't cheese thanks to stats. These people want to watch movies and let the gamew play themselves, not actually engage with the medium.
