Knights are more in tune with the idea of Cavalry, which the spear/lance is better suited for thematically.
Knights are also more likely to have a shield, being a more defensive archetype.

it is a correct assumption, but i would argue the sword is more in line with the nobility/chivalric ideals of a knight, while the spear is for the footmen or warrior on formation.

The assumptions are being made for the sake of a middle-fantasy party of heroes, admittedly. In a lower fantasy or realistic setting the two could definitely be swapped.

An ordinary greatsword/zweihander isn't actually heavy enough to cause damage with the flat of the blade, since the weight is evenly distributed along its length and they don't weigh much to begin with.
You'd cause more harm with a gauntleted fist.

If you play Path of Exile 1 there are Warstaves that are generally physical melee weapons and they are pretty damn good. They are the crit based melee weapon.

In PoE2 Quarterstaves are melee, but they are a Dex/Int option and are all about elemental skills.

I think there were somel law in some pr-industrial(i.e. "medieval") countries where the clergy were not allowed to carry knives or sharp weapons that could draw blood but were still allowed to defend themselves and their churches with blunt weapons and supposedly the flail/morning-star was carried by clergymen for this purpose. But I could be wrong and lot of "facts" of the "middle ages" (which somehow people think it also includes the "early modern era") are heavily tainted by pop-culture

Clerics used the same weapons as normal people.
The morning star was used because it was cheaper, more durable and hit a lot harder than a sword, while being much shorter and easier to carry and wear than a polearm, especially as a side arm or in civil.

Because game devs. Nothing stops a warrior/fighter to use a staff like a bonk stick. Nothing stops them from using anything else as a weapon either. Not being able to use staves is a very petty arbitrary limitation. However, they cannot use staves to a full potential, as in use them as a focus/source to cast magic/boost to magics etc, and if they bonk someone hard enough, the staff might break.
Same with wands - can poke someone's eye out or pierce a skull or clobber up, but cant cast magic from it for shit.

Also, in Morrowind, you can use staves as a warrior to your heart's content. They are not exactly durable, but have good reach and a ttack speed. Enchant one with some damage speed and proceed to bully enemies. Just watch out for dremoras and anything with spell reflect.

Good, but its arbitrary. Anyone should be able to use anyone's weapon. However, the full potential can only be realised by the specific class. Nothing stops ranger from using a hammer, but only paladin can use it to its full potential - special moves, boost to smites, attack and damage rolls, special effects, etc. And wizard's tone is something that is useless for almost anyone unless they have dipped 1 level into wizard, have magic initiate feat, or are spellcasters (and even then they cannot use it for even half of the efficiency).

What. BG3 has Halberd of Vigilance. HoMM4 has Halberd of Swiftwatch. If you want to bitch about TES games, Morrowind has Stormforge halberd (your point stands with oblivion and skyrim). If you use Tamriel Rebuilt, there are a few more. I think Pillars of Eternity has one or two (i think one of those is called Half-Mast and you only get it by killing the dragon hunter).

They are rare, but they do exist.
