Got a job as a game programmer.
Look at me.
I'm the professional now.
>>
>>731070539
so what was the last game thing you coded?

Been posting my goblins here for a while. Green, not red.

If you're working on your game now, how long did it take you to go from studying game development to actually beginning on your game? I feel like it took me a lot longer to get to that point than I'd like, though I didn't really commit to learning until the beginning of last year, and I often worry I'm very slow in making any progress.
>>
>>731070970
Don't worry about it. I was studying tutorials for years, working on bad prototypes for years, then good prototypes for years. I'm about 15 years into it and I'm just starting to get good.
It's a marathon, not a sprint.
>>
>>731070970
I made a game while learning game dev and unreal engine for 3 years total. Prior to that I had no game dev experience at all except a bit of painting and 3D modeling.

Working on a plant dragon, but my ideas aren't really working out the way I imagined. Will have to redo the wings and try a version without the pink. I relied too much on existing plant girl designs and now it's a mess of the flower theme and the wood/thorns theme.

>>731070539
My condolences anon, I hope you get a proper job soon.

>>731070970
My earliest design document is from 2021, but that was just random ideas I get every few weeks(was 300k words into a novel at that point). Started actually trying in early 2024 after giving up on an unrelated novel, but very sporadically.
Just keep at it anon, and focus on building up the habbit of working on it. Taking a look at my drawing folder, in 2025 I only ever made anything from April to August, so there's a lot of room for productivity improvement.

Making a game is a marathon, try looking at it as a way to spend your time instead of obstacles that frustrate you. If you hate every step of the way, maybe it's the wrong medium for you. Maybe give writing, VNs, comics, etc. a chance.
And don't expect you can cleanly divide things into "learning" and "doing". You will constantly learn new things as you work, change what you even want to make and redo things.

Nobody boughted my game. So why should I work on anything when I now know nobody will be boughting anything?
>>
>>731072729
Don't do it for them, do it for you.
Should you work if people boughted your game, or shouldn't you work if people didn't boughted your game, it doesn't matter; either way you're doing it for them.
>>
>>731070858
there's various goblin posters, that tells me nothing.
>>
>>731072918
>do it for you
Game development requires too much time, effort and sometimes even money for that to be enough.
>>
>>731073024
So you don't actually want to do it? Just quit then. Don't force yourself into this life.
>>
>>731070970

>So you don't actually want to do it?
Not anymore. It doesn't help that all gamers are insolent cunts who will reviewbomb your game and doxx you even for the slightest bug or mistake in your game. There's thankless jobs and then there's gamedev where you're actively despised for doing it.
No other creative medium audience is like this.

should have released it for free and begged for donations, would have unironically gotten more money from pity donations on itch.

Retopology for a character should be a quick job anybody who knows what they're doing clicks through in an hour or two, but it takes me the minimum of fucking three days and still looks like ass. Why am I so retarded?
>>
>>731074359
sounds like procrastination, lack of motivation and/or perfectionism, these things can make game dev almost impossible.

Topology is a bad meme. It's just something "professionals" use to gatekeep the industry. Meanwhile the actual topology coming out of AAA games are all over the place. Some of the clothes look like they're straight out of marvelous designer. If you're worried, just buy a clean base mesh and the SoftWrap plugin for blender (assuming you're using blender). It lets you pull the basemesh over your mesh. Should take you like 30 minutes once you know your way around the plugin.

>>

>Meanwhile the actual topology coming out of AAA games are all over the place.
Yeah, and they're a good example of why it matters. Performance is lost unnecessarily on stupidly heavy meshes that don't deform well and look uglier than the stuff they made 20 years ago. I want to avoid that at all costs. I can't compete with AAA-developers, but I at least want my game to run well even on an ancient flip phone while still looking decently detailed. And I know the equation is possible.
