I remember playing 64 to death as a kid, mowing lawns to get money to get a Gamecube, and absolutely being stunned and awestruck at how much there was to do with Melee. Even outside of regular Matches, it takes awhile to unlock trophies, characters, and stages, all the while you keep on trying different game modes to see what will be unlocked. Sakurai isn't going to have some sort of Grinch epiphany where his heart grows 10 sizes and he realizes that fun, competitive and casual gameplay aren't mutually exclusive.
Brawl sold a gorillion copies. 4 sold a gorillion copies. Ultimate sold a gorillion copies, and is the single highest selling fighting game* of all time.

There are three candidates

Smash probably went into production in 2023. This was around the time Bamco started hiring for an "action game with a side view". Around the same time, Nintendo began updating Smash Ultimate adding new tournaments and a few new spirits. Something similar happened with Splatoon 2 where, after ending updates, they started Splatfest up again a year later only to announce Splatoon 3 not long after. Nintendo has also updated the trademark for use in restaurants and hospitality.

The Mario Kart 8 Booster Pass ended in Nov 2023, right when Bamco put out the hiring and when they updated Ultimate. HAL is because they haven't had a project come out since late 2023 other than Kirby DLC and there likely wont be another Kirby game in early 2026 (it may also be why they asked Sakurai to make Air Riders are it was going to be a while for the next Kirby). Nintendo also likes to give games back to the original developer as shown with MP4 and Retro. Bamco could be because they are the ones hiring but they are a support studio so they could be working in that role. Sakurai did mention that he met with members of HAL during May 2024 so there's that. [/spoiler]Of the three, I'm leaning towards HAL. One thing weird about Kirby Air Rider's timeline is that Sakurai couldn't start till April 2022. This would line up with Kirby and the Forgotten Land ending but then he's using the Smash team which doesn't make sense. So there is a possibility something changed along the way and the teams got shuffled around with HAL taking Smash and Sakurai needing the Smash team to finish Air Riders[/spoiler]

Air Riders being Nintendo's idea that they asked Sakurai to make rather than the initial assumption of Sakurai wanting to take a break and do a passion project makes me think Nintendo has a plan for Smash already and they would like to see someone new give it a shot sothey told Sakurai to do something else. Air Riders first and then Sakurai gets to Smash means we'd still be looking at another 3 years before the game comes out and a Smash game that late into the system's life sounds insane to me
