The lack of immersion you get with Pathologic 3 is pretty glaring compared to 2. You really lived and breathed the town in 2. Had to eat, sleep, drink, overall it made you care more about the characters, because it was a bitch just to survive yourself.

I'm only a few hours into Pathologic 3, but I can agree. Some of my favorite moments of 2 was just walking the streets, listening to the leaves rustle in the wind while checking trashcans for supplies. All while towns people walked around and the kids played. A strange sense of serenity despite people fucking dying of sand pest just across the bridge.

I get Daniil isn't from the town and yes, the fast travel does make backtracking feel less like a slog. But it still makes me feel disconnected from everything. Which again, I know kind of works for his character but as a player who loved 2, it's a bit disappointing.

I think you're basically right in that a lot of the design decisions were clearly made to serve the time-travel mechanic, but with the double duty of sidestepping the backlash they got from casuals over P2. So it's understandable that they were tweaking the balance of those two factors right up until release. I'm sure they'll keep tweaking them.

I've done some testing and I think empty containers may even respawn eventually (at a low rate) and mirrors reset relative to your amalgam level (at a super high rate even when you have less than one vessel).
So this seems deliberate at least but I think the high end (when you don't need anything) could be tuned way down. But I'm not sure how you'd achieve that, even if the bartering/economy were perfect, given that you're (initially) constantly jumping to fresh days which always comes with a massive resource spike. Design around that and players will eventually hit a resource wall after 20 hours or whatever of the game teaching them not to worry about it.

most of the difficulty is in mechanics you don't understand until later, when your run is bricked. One or two of the runes you need to draw are bugged/finnicky to use. I did. Not a lot in terms of gameplay. Even by IPL standarts, pretty much a walking sim/p&c adventure with a couple of simplistic puzzles. Hits hard in the feels but artdirection is rather boring.
