So apparently this is still being made, but what was the big controversy over? I can't find a straight answer anywhere.
>>
something about the character being weird looking if you modded the game to see it
>>
There isn't a straight answer, it's a back and forth between shitty company owners and questionable devs.
>>
>>731075809
>niggers again

Gee, dunno.
>>
>>731075882
>>731076021
This is only a controversy on /v/, the actual controversy is >>731075890.
>>
>>731075809
>what was the big controversy over?
the expansion sucked
>>
>>731075809
a company with a a bad reputation bought the IP and replaced the entire dev team(who also had a bad reputation after subnautica:below zero). basically, all we know is it's going to be multiplayer
>>
>>731075809
Unknown Worlds, developers of Subnautica, sold themselves to Krafton (giant South Korean gaming conglomerate) in 2021. This isn't the first time that they did something of this nature, they'd previously welcomed a Chinese investment company to buy a controlling share of the company between 2010 and 2019.
Afterwards they released Below Zero with the company.
Partway through Subnautica 2's development, the Head Devs got fired. The people that led development of Subnautica 1 and Below Zero.
Krafton says it is because they were stalling out development. Others say it is just corporate greed and Krafton trying to forcefully acquire the IP.
>>
>>731077059
So which side is correct?
>>
>>731077115
We'll see when Subnautica 2 comes out if it is amazing or bad.
>>
Is Subnautica 1 worth playing? Any shit woke besides the brown indian/Latinx character?
>>
>>731077297
Do you like fishes?
Do you like scavenger hunts?
The 'climax' with a certain alien is pretty Disney-esque.
>>
>>731076169
You left out the last where the original dev team was blowing money with nothing to show for it just like riots Hytale team.
>>
>>731077297
its an open world survival crafting except in the ocea
>>
>>731077297
Yes it’s worth playing despite some minor wokeshit.
>>
>>731077115
The subnautica devs removed guns from their game(ultimately a good choice) specifically to own the chuds. It was inevitable that they would implode.
>>
>>731077297
Subnautica1 is worth it, the expasion sucks
>>
>>731075809
>What was the big controversy over?

tl;dr:

>Korean company, Krafton, basically their EA, buys Unknown Worlds after Below Zero was a flop due to wokeness and they released another game nobody ever heard of
>Krafton spends a gorillion dollars on the purchase and promises a HUGE payout for the lead devs and the rest of the developers independently if they ship a product on time and up to expectations
>Lead devs basically don't do any work for 3 years, one of them even works on creating his own Hollywood Christmas movie about lesbians (yes really), come to Krafton with the bare minimum product
>Krafton says there's no way they can make any money off this and the CEO asks ChatGPT (yes really) how to get out of the contract they signed
>The 3 lead devs who didn't do their jobs -- and were also the ones who decided to wokify Below Zero -- got fired by Krafton and not paid their $500 million bonus
>Krafton instead went over their heads and decided to pay the programmers/artists/etc the bonus instead so they'd be happy to continue working

Basically, greedy corpo decided to screw over wokeoid lead devs and it's going to court in Korea.
>>
>>731077391
They not really comparable.
Hytale sat in development hell for a decade with nothing to show for it. And then when it was bought back by the original dev what released is basically what they showed off 10 years ago.
Subnautica was released from 2014 to 2018, Below Zero was released shortly after the acquisition in 2021, and Subnautica 2 was meant to be released in 2025, before the lead devs were fired shortly before the release deadline and early access was pushed back to 2026.

Unknown Worlds is fairly slow as a studio, but Subnautica 2 doesn't seem to have had a development hell like stall.
Unless they really shit the bed and Krafton got their best team on the line to beat together a good Early Access release in a year, I don't think you can compare Hytale to Subnautica 2.
>>
>>731075809
The controversy was the sequel was pozzed slop with none of the things that made the original good. They made lightning in a bottle and cannot replicate it because they care more about agenda than good gameplay.

Subnautica 1 is hardly woke. You have to go out of your way to view the main character (need to build an entirely separate base compartment), and it makes sense that he's a mutt because IN CANON the Libertarians won and he works for a Trans-galactic Corporate Government. There's a separate TransGov that's made up entirely of Mongolians.

The actual game itself is great. My only complaint, as someone who is deathly allergic to wokeism mind you, is that the game is on the buggier side. Not Bethesda levels of buggy, but certainly not up to the level of polish you'd see from Valve or Nintendo.
>>
>>731077476
They didn't do it to own the chuds. Flayra (one of the 3 lead devs) decided to come out after the choice to not include guns was made and say it was political, but the rest of the dev team decided early on that they didn't want any real weapons because it took away from the atmosphere of the game if you could just easily kill all the big fishes instead of having to play around them.
>>
>>731075809
>devs claim they got fucked over by scummy publishers
>publishers claim the devs embezzled funds for personal projects and just didn't do their jobs
>no one knows who to believe because both sides are incredibly unlikable
>>
>>731077297
It's really good unless you have thalassophobia.
>>
>>731077947
Best summary of it I've heard.
>>
>>731077849
Subnautica 1 benefitted from the anti-gun position of the devs even if it was for liberal reasons. One of the times wokeness benefitted game design.
Below Zero just missed the mark because they talk tooo much. Yes cool tripod alien but man it ruins the mystery to have them in your head and who the fuck asked for being on land.
>>
>>731078054
below zero is shit in every way. Even if you stripped away all of the woke shit from the game it would still suck.
>>
>>731078054
Like yes the cold but you have cold icy watery depths too and that fits subnautica more. Land being rare makes more sense in general. Like that whole snow section would've been better if it was mostly underwater, the land monsters easily could've been like territorial orca analogs and giant worm monsters exist underwater just fine. Seaworms tend to be way more terrifying than their land counterparts as is.
>>
>>731078161
It's really easy to avoid sea worms, especially ones that would require being in deep water to function.
>>
>>731078054
That's the thing - the devs didn't decide to not have guns for woke reasons. Flayra just decided ex post facto that it was for woke reasons because he's of that persuasion.

Unknown Worlds isn't a traditional dev team. They were originally mod makers (Natural Selection and Natural Selection II) that had devs from around the world, from Europe to America to Australia. Flayra was just the ideas guy who was one of the 3 "lead" devs. Their previous title was a shooter, so it's not like they're opposed to guns.

Like in the seas below the Antarctic shelf there is a phenomena known Brinicles that kill you on touch
Imagine having to navigate underwater icy caverns either this kinda shit
I was expecting to deal with stuff like that going into below zero instead of what we got
>>
>>731077638
Devs who refuse to do the job they're hired for is far worse than a company who rightfully doesn't pay them for not doing their job.
>>
>>731077935
Nope, it was done totally and solely to stick it to the right, this explanation allows us to make ourselves extremely angry and rage on /v/.
>>
>>731078379
If only that kinda shit would happen to a CEO from Activision or EA
>>
>>731078379
The lower level devs complained, when Krafton asked, that they didn't have any direction because the lead devs were never around to actually lead the project. Lead devs got replaced and they started speeding through development.
>>
>>731075809
look at below zero and some parts of the original
the devs have zero idea what people liked
its not gonna be good
>>
>>731077638
Krafton sounds based here
>>
the best part of this controversy was the devs going to reddit to plead their case only for Krafton to drop all the drama behind the scenes the next day.

The brine pools in Subnautica were the coolest shit, basically a sea... under the sea.
Shame that you have no reason to go back to that area once you've explored the alien facility.

They're a greedy corporation, I wouldn't call them based. But if I had to choose between the two, I would side with the greedy corporation over the lazy wokescold.

You'll probably enjoy it if you enjoy exploration and horror. The survival aspects are just a way to put you on a timer so that you're forced to go out and explore dangerous areas for sustenance.
