yes but not for a long time yet
>>
It's really striking how little fantasy is out there right now considering it was *the* setting in the age of retro PC gaming. The players might still want it, but developers just do not want you going on magical adventures.
>>
>>731082603
WoW can't even repeat its own success anymore.
May as well go back to being an RTS series.

Fortnite is zoomer wow

Even then, III was inferior to 2.

RTS are dead. The only strategy games now are for turbo autists.
>>
>>731082603
It was lightning in the bottle, released in a period people began quitting mmo's altogether because it was poopsock levels of hard and even became a joke.
>>
>>731082603
Not yet. I fully expect there to be a resurgence in the future but right now gacha is killing the genre.
>>
>>731085556
Let me guess? The changes to the Horde, the graphics and the narrative?
>>731087486
>RTS are dead.
If they are dead, then why there are still games produced to this day?
>>
Probably.
Will it come in the form of an MMO?
Probably not.
The main draw of an MMO was the large scale social interaction which was a novelty at the time. Now, it's not only not a novelty but the average person is fucking sick of it and rejecting social media and retreating to smaller isolated circles.

You'd have to drastically improve on the MMO format while making an interesting universe to live in and keeping the aesthetics top tier.

The League MMO could have been that if it was made before Riot went full gay retards with Arcane and shit.

Video game have a chance, Table-Top gaming, however, is over.

It's a completely captured market.

PAXU had a panel featuring people from critical role and catalyst game labs showing how to not have white people play board or tabletop games.
>>
Nah. It was only possible back in those days when games were made faster and under different environment.

WoW hit at the right place at the right time in terms of consumer interest and tech
>broadband was good enough that online gaming was viable, not quite so good that 'twitch' genres were viable for most people yet
>Same with computer tech.
>Social media hadn't taken off yet so wow was social media for a lot of people
>No mobas eating away at the digital berries/progression dopamine hit audience (It's not a coincidence LoL got big at the exact same time WoW sees it first drop ever)
>It's not super relevant to most WoW players now or zoomers, but WC was a massive (for the time) established franchise from a beloved developer, i.e, they had a large preexisting install base.
>Media in general was more centralised in the past and people had fewer options. This made it easier for certain ips/products to become a socio/-cultural 'moment.'

So no, the success won't be replicated, at least not till we have an anime-tier tech jump. Riot probably had a chance when LoL was riding its peak, but they missed their window. At least they were smart enough to realise this and cancel GC's inevitable lol/wow reskin.
>>
>>731082679
This is depressing.
>>
>>731082603
No.
Because the success of the 90's/Early 2000's can never be repeated.
>>
>>731082603
No. Now everyone wants to datamine and read wiki's to figure everything out about a game first rather than explore it themselves.
>>
>>731082603
No, no other MMO will become the cultural phenomenon that WoW became after it came out. Any MMO that tries to do WoW's marketing scheme from that time(celebrity commercials, ads in fucking everything, ect.) will probably see a fraction of the success because the internet and the majority of its users just aren't the same was they were back then. That being said, if it managed to go viral across Social Media they its a possibility it'd reach a good level of success.

no game will ever come close unless they nail the feel and gameplay of wow
warcraft, starcraft and diablo would never have succeeded if not for blizzard's insane work ethic and obsession with gameplay
their stories and characters are very one dimensional and the games tend to be very simple and even grindy
but playing them feels amazing regardless and you naturally want more and more

This is genuinely the most important part. For a long time, WoW and MMOs were the best way to communicate reliably with your friends while also having fun.
