It used to be about natural disasters called the "Hollows," basically massive bubbles of space distortion. It's kinda post apo except the city where the game takes place has learned to mine them for resources so it kind of (initially) was about people illegally venturing into these Hollows for whatever reason and the MCs were proxies (you needed someone to map out a route for you inside hollows).

The concept is a pretty basic action game with team building and character swapping, but its carried *hard* by the presentation (especially animations and sound fx). Standard difficulty is easy enough for casuals to just button mash through but harder difficulty enemies will 2 shot you. Its actually pretty fun. It feels good to play once you get the hang of it.

Kind of makes me wish diabloIV had taken this path.

It was fine I guess. I liked the Obol stuff and Spook Shack had some nice moments. Genuinely didn't expect the Yunkui Summit DEEP DARK SECRET plot twist.
Shungus felt forced at the start but she grew on me by the end. Lockspring absolutely stole the show though, his presence elevated the story and I can only imagine it would've been subpar without him.

Some of the stories were good in vacuum (Spook Shack, SEED), but they really failed to connect together into proper cohesive story for the Season. S1 also had this problem for a bit, but to much lesser extent.
Also, I hated how pretty much every character in S2 had some kind of tragic terrible backstory. Even Ju Fufu who seemed liked really fun character at first glance was retrofitted with the nonsense about her being one of the final Tiger Thirens, because of that fucking absorption Engine.

Terrible overall. There were good moments like in 2.1 or some parts in 2.2 but you can tell they rewrote their initial story and were just making shit up as they went along. They also had 0 clue on what to do with Sarah which becomes increasingly apparent as you go through the passages. Nothing really important happened in waifei until the last patch either. I do have hopes for the devs though, the events have been really fucking good and reminds me of Season 1.

I don't really have a problem with Phaethon not being wanted fugitives since their proxy work was always a means to an end. The main issue I had was that they went into the hollows and put themselves in danger every patch so the on banner character can aura farm and save them when they can just do their job in the temple and be completely safe. Thankfully, the devs realized how retarded that shit was with the co-op event so hopefully they continue in 3.x
