Better time than ever. I've had the Deck since 2024 and it's only gotten better since I bought it. Today I upgraded to the beta build to see what's going on with it and I'm pleasantly surprised by NTsync. Power usage has dropped by about 20% and games with terrible microstutter like Fallout 3 and Black Ops run much better.

That being said, it's not perfect. If you want to play most AAA games made after 2020 at anything more than an FSR'd 720p @ 30FPS you'll need to get the Steam Machine instead (or just a better PC). There are also beefier handhelds out there. I also own a Switch 2 and it's gonna cover me until the SD2 comes out.

The OLED model has a gorgeous screen and it’s very versatile as you’d expect with what’s basically a Switch shaped gaming laptop but it doesn’t perform the best in more recent games and can be a bit buggy. It’s kinda old now too but nothing has replaced it (yet; non OLED handhelds go in the trash). I’d say go for it if you know you’ll use it and don’t care about the latest sloppa.

It got me to finally play my backlog of older 2D steam and emulated games I never had motivation enough to play on my desktop.

Compared to other handheld PCs it's size and form factor are more comfortable and those 2 mouse pads will come in handy when trying to configure controls for certain titles which don't have native controller support. SD also has the most community support/custom software to solve any issues compared to any of the other handhelds out there. The only real trade off is it's not the best at running the latest AAA games compared to other handhelds but that's what your desktop should be for anyways.
