>hands down one of the greatest fantasy film to book adaptation in cinema history

Literally the heroes journey completely with slaying the evil hound after him the entire time

>not one single video game adaptation

It would be an awesome game if done right like the early Gothic & Demon's Soul's games
>>

You posted over in /tv/ calling The Neverending Story "forgotten", like a retard.

This is only confirmed by your belief that the book of the Neverending Story is good. It's not. The first half which the film was based on was great, no doubt, but the second half is a boring disjointed mess thanks to the magical wishing desert sphinx. It's so tonally bust that it was known for making people drop the book entirely.

It wouldn't even work as a point and click, let alone some third person thing. The c64 attempt was trash.

Dude...the film is a complete antithesis to the book
It's why the writer hated it so much

Wasn't there an actual MMORPG adaptation of this in like late 90's or very early 2000's, the preWoW era?
Or did that get canceled? I remember reading previews of it when I was a kid and founding it fascinating as a concept, but I was on dialup at the time, so I didn't really follow MMO games news on releases.

>Ende, who was reportedly "revolted" by the film, requested they halt production or change the film's name, as he felt it had ultimately and drastically deviated from his novel; when they did neither, he sued them and subsequently lost the case.

Shoulda negotiated that contract better.

He mostly had issue with the original ending where Falkor becomes real and helps Bastian bully his bullies.
It was a silly moment in the film and nothing bad happens to the bad kids, but Ende thought that single moment undermined the whole story.

Ende also took issue with the special effects. But his problem wasn't that they were good or bad nor anything like that. His problem was that the movie used special effects at all.
Like, what the fuck did he expect?

No, I have been thinking about Neverending Story. Trust me, I can tell the fucking difference between DnD and Ende's universe. Also, this was like 5 years before Neverwinter Nights was even a thing in gaming industry, this was back in the Infinity Engine era of RPG's, and the planned Neverending Story MMORPG was a first person game.

>>731123798
Found it. The project was originally named "The Real Neverending Story" and was in development since 1996, originally planned as a first person hybrid MMO / singleplayer action/RPG/adventure something.
It was actually insanely ambitious and cost about 10 million dollars back in 1996 money to develop.
It was a game that was meant to run on two separate engines simultaneously, switching engine entirely for interior and exterior locations. I remember this being a massive selling point in the previews, them really, REALLY pushing this idea of exterior locations being unlike nothing you've played before.

It ended up in development hell, the company went bankrupt, eventually Akela stepped in help to assemble the few existing assets and pieces of code into a singleplayer action platformer titled:
"The Real Neverending Story Part 1: Auryn Quest"
Which flopped spectacularly.

So yeah, a bit of completely forgotten gaming history. One of the most ambitious European projects of the 90's - now completely lost to history.

fucking scared me as a kid, because how they roasted that one guy's face
>>
>>731122060
I was also bored by the second half when I was a kid, but it CAN be reworked into something enjoyable.
It's what a movie is supposed to do after all. You can even take huge liberties but keep the message at least.

I'm not surprised the guy got mad at Hollywood, it was a book about the dangers of escapism and they almost made it a glorification of it.
>>
I remember nothing about this shit other than the kid is reading the book during a storm, the dog dragon thing scared the shit out of me as a kid, and the horse drowns in a swamp.
>>
>>731122701
I noticed you didn't mention The Labyrinth, presumably because you know it's the best.
>>
>>731122060
The second half is good in concept (and very important to the overall story) but the execution wasn't particularly interesting.
>>
>>731121091
Back in elementary school, the teachers decided to show this movie at the end of the school year. A girl from one of the other classes started crying when the horse sank into the swamp. Still funny when I think of it almost 30 years later.
>>
Stupid fucking movie
>>
>>731124860
Why?
>>
>>731122060
Second half is awful, especially the ending. In the book, there is a city full of people who never escape Fantastica (which seems to be most people who enter), and then the book ends by saying Bastion helps lead many more people there. The Empress basically consumes them.
>>

nta, but sometimes you have to be pretty heartless as a writer in order to get the proper emotional impact. I feel pretty bad about a lot of the things I put my characters through, but that's the point, the suffering is what makes them characters to begin with. A triumph means nothing if it had no cost, and a confilct has no weight if there is no real threat.

This is just general writing stuff. Its been years since I saw neverending story, so I can't speak about it specifically.

Escapism is something meant for rest which is necessary for the continued health of a person.
But eventually you got to get back up and continue enduring the world otherwise you will start to rot physically, and mentally.
The mistake that creatives make in this regard is that escapism is not the cause, its a symptom of a shit life to which the only answer they as professionals have is to keep working at it which rings hollow if struggle alone is not enough.
