In order to make a one piece story you would not only need to contrive a very specific set of characters but you would either have to make your OC donutsteele interact with the actual crew or have no significant interaction with pretty much any character of note which is half the fucking point of enjoying the series. I dipped at the start of Elbaf because I got tired of the crew getting separated again for filler and my favorite SJ manga got executive-meddled and rushed to end while this was going on.
