Isotropic bunnyhopping allows for quicker movement in all directions. Lack of railgun helps to neuter boring +back playstyles. Interesting dynamic around spawn frags where players are fighting for control to spawn frag instead of having some weird "balance" to the map where both players are always stacked and spawn far away from each other when they die. Mature community filled with adults instead of buttangry teenagers, for the most part.

I have no idea how to bhop/gain speed in Quake. I figured out how to go faster/further on the first jump by doing some weird diagonal half circle "wind up" with the mouse but that is obviously impossible to do on consecutive jumps. I also keep defaulting to what l'm doing in source

There are active servers throughout the day across all regions. From the hub you can browse active servers, spectate from the browser, or even click to join. All the gameplay I post is actually clipped from the Hub's in-browser demo viewing feature. Feel free to give it a whirl, it is pretty impressive tech that you won't find in any modern shooter.

QuakeWorld has much better netcode after Reki introduced the modern antilag features. The "balance" present in Quake 3 and onward is precisely why I don't like the game. They "balanced" all the fun out of it. You simply hold +back while sniffing your monitor so you can react to your rail angles. There is too much armor spread out around the map, and you are guaranteed a safe spawn far from the opponent who fragged you. To each his own.

The balance is exactly what makes Q3/QL great and allows you to stage a comeback in the match. Unlike QW where you're getting fragged right off spawn all the time with gigantic rocket splash damage. Oh and god forbid you let your opponent get the Quad, now you can get spawn camped even harder for 30 seconds, amazing.

Yes, much of QuakeWorld is fighting over who gets to be in control. Being in control earns you the ability to make spawnfrags. Quake 3's balance does not reward the controlling player enough. Item pickups become a formality, there are enough to go around, and you don't actually control the map. Sure the winning player gets access to slightly better armor and maybe in extreme cases can lock the enemy out of a single weapon. For me, part of what makes an Arena FPS game interesting is the snowballing nature of control. I think it is fun to kill someone in the middle of ztndm3 6 times in a row. I think it is interesting to finally get a spawn away from the rape and try to mount your comeback, so you can then be the controlling player.
