Do you know anyone who is good at discussing video games, design and mechanics?I like survival crafting game and I watched a video of a guy who mainly plays them, but when he talked about one of them he basically just said where he went, what weapon he had and what he killed, like very little detail of how any of the mechanics worked together, how he felt about the game other than "yeah it was fun I guess", or how it compared to other very similar games and what it did better or worse.I watched the Second Wind channel because of Yahtzee, but it's basically just his videos there that I find worthwile, every other person there comes across like normie cattle, I don't mean offense there, but I genuinely think that is the best way to convey what they're like. When the Oblivion Remaster came out there was a video of a guy talking about how obviously the dungeons in oblivion are dated compared to skyrim since there's no quick exit at the end and you have to walk back, it genuinely confused me after being part of so much one sided trash talk of skyrim dungeons over the decades. I guess he was probably 10 when Skyrim was released and can't ever know better though.
They all have faults and limitations, but I mainly think of these people that I think are actually worthwhile.Grubby, but only for RTS games, and he can be a bit too cautious since he doesn't wanna burn bridges, but he was truly able dissect Stormgate when trying it.Tim Caine, old game dev who talks about game design. Yahtzee, he can ragequit because he sucks and can't do multiplayer, but he makes games himself and genuinely thinks about mechanics. Yahtzee has insulted a game someone here really likes, so he'll be triggering someone into a rage.Only recently learned about Rosencreutz, he made this video on the civilization formula which I found pretty interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvqIQwXI8E8I feel like I don't know MMOs well enough, so I can't say if Josh Strife Hayes is good at covering them, but he's another one that comes to mind.A one-off, but David Brevik's postmortem talk of diablo 1 is great, especially how it went from turn based to real time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VscdPA6sUkcI don't expect to get any good suggestions, since Yahtzee likely made a joke about someone's favourite game and made someone mad forever. There's glimmer of gold on /v/, /vst/ and /vrpg/, but less so in recent years.Too many of my friends just get excited about buying the next remaster of a game they already own 3 times and care little for how maybe the game gets changed for the worse, they just wanna consume.
Games require media literacy to discuss in any meaningful way and 90% of people who play games are not literate in the medium. This is what happens when all niche hobbies go mainstream. Same thing with movies and trying to find someone who can actually discuss film in depth.
I am a fan of the more mechanical breakdowns of games. Both analyzing functionality as well as deciphering developer intent within the design. https://www.youtube.com/@DisplacedGamers This is a great channel for technical breakdowns which looks over the assembly code to give objective answers for why and how something works. Much better than those more blog-like channels which will talk about a new glitch or speedrun strat discovered and will describe as "the game gets confused". I don't see as much deep analysis of developer design intent though. I think it's something much harder for people to grasp since so much of game design is ubiquitous and just sort of taken for granted by the player. I sometimes think about it a bit myself and try to decipher what the thought process might have been when designing the levels and mechanics in the game I'm playing. Though I don't think I could really put my thoughts into a 4 hour long video essay, and I feel like it's really missing an important part of the story if you don't have insight from the actual developer.
>>731149386i want to tell you a secret, OP. 99% of the artistic industries are just imitating retards who can't think for themselves. Think about Daniel day lewis compared to other actors.
