Flash was a security disaster.

It was a combination of Apple, Adobe, and to some extent Google (yes, I am still annoyed they fucked up NPAPI vs PPAPI use specifically to undermine Firefox, Linux and push everyone onto Chrome/ium plugin style) who took away support so to speak, but the problem wasn't so much a technical one, it was a monetization one. Just like how looking at the best Flash animations or whatever doesn't make up for all the crap out there, but even fucking Newgrounds moved towards a monetization style that is more like mobile bullshit. If Flash survived as a technology (and you can at least play most animations or games with native level support in modern browsers without the kind of shit you needed back then) commonly used, it would probably be corrupted the same way. In any event, the content made on Flash was not the same thing as the technology of Shockwave/Flash itself and many could lament the lost of the best of the former while having no interest in the latter.

JPG and PNG are still perfectly adequate formats which can be edited with just about any software. GIF was ready to be replaced by aPNG, I don't know why it never took off. I've seen aPNGs in common use on some small image boards and they're fine. But even so, soundless webm is also superior to GIF.
There was also that thing with jewgle deliberately planting insecurities in webp. Right around the time Windows 7 extended support was ending and browsers and graphic drivers dropped support for it. Win 7 users just stopped updating Chrome, so jewgle revealed that there's some critical security issue that result in your computer getting pozzed if it loads any webp image unless you update to Win 10 and use recent versions of Chrome or other mainstream browsers.
