Open world is a design format that you choose when you want to pull a fast one on your supervisor, because the project being managed hasn't accomplished any work.
The vast majority of the perceived work is just defined by layered functions and RNG.

It really says a lot about Dark Souls 2 and 3 that they couldn't even add an open world and instead had to haphazardly stitch together barely finished content, pad out the levelcount with flat swamps and copypasta and just generally pretend that the games weren't missing at least half of their planned content (from the world map in Majula's basement it even looks like they wanted to make an open world).

This is the Dunning Kruger hill I will die on, clearly I am at the pinnacle of human knowledge in the subject.

All of the 'large' castles have people living in them.
>>
>>731157631
Yeah it doesn't really feel "lived in" does it.

The level design in Demons' Souls and Dark Souls was brilliant because the world worked and operated like a real place. The game is spent un-learning everything that being a video game has ever taught you and trying to use your head. If you want to move upwards quickly instead of running through a convoluted castle then you use an elevator designed for transporting big rocks.

I remember little glimpses of this when you're running through a castle and you figure out that you can kick a ladder down or something. It's a sharp contrast from the rest of the game which is spent running through a Final Fantasy wallpaper and encountering one church with an ultra powerful NPC sitting on a dilapidated rock for 150 years.

The open world just exasperated the problems with Miyazaki's "after the bomb dropped" type settings.
I still think Demon's Souls and Bloodborne do it best just by virtue of being set really close to the time things went off the rails. Less empty. Less dead. Less 'it's been 10,000 years shit's rotting away'.

One of the biggest issues with elden ring is that there's too much souls dna in its storytelling.
This land is supposed to be alive and have a future, merely going through a massive civil war and not an apocalyptic scenarios yet there are no settlements beyond Jarburg and every single human still looks like a shriveled zombie. NPCs have the same terrible, vague garbage ass storylines mostly ending with their deaths, i think only Ranni, Nepheli and Patches got positive outcomes. Jarburg gets cheaply destroyed offscreen. 80% of the lore is removed from the game so lorefags could jerk themselves with headcanons into oblivion.
This game really needed Sekiro style storytelling.

Lands Between are not supposed to be rotting away, it's supposed to be a Sengoku period with a bunch of warlords fighting over the land, yet you can't feel it. Nioh unironically makes better use of its own setting in that regard.

I hard dropped the game when I realized the random zombie soldiers were meant to be actual people. As in these guys are meant to be regular soldiers.
The 'empty, dying world full of horrors" worked well with Dark Souls, particularly the first one, because of the setting. It's just too retarded in Elden Ring for me to bear.

What we're expected to believe is that this is a world in the aftermath of a massive war that ended in a stalemate, with all the lords involved in the conflict still living and mostly still sentient, and all still leading armies wearing their colors and bearing their banners, that these armies have organized encampments scattered around the world and are patrolling their castles, but there is not a single fucking town with any living population at all that is not mindlessly feral.

It's incredible how Fromsoft used to be so good at making their worlds immersive and in line with their mechanics back in the days of Demon's Souls, and now are arguably one of the worst developers in the industry at immersion while mindlessly repeating their old mechanics.

Can anyone explain the appeal of Souls games? Not being snarky, I've tried several of them and Souls-like games like Nioh and I am very quickly turned off. It was fine in DeS/DaS but I agree Souls fatigue is here in more ways than just gameplay. I thought GRMM's involvement would mean more of an actual plot for Elden Ring and it's still pretty much the same shit.

As a Dark Souls veteran with thousands of hours of playtime under my belt I did not think a single one of these questions going into Elden Ring.
I as promised "Dark Souls 3 with an open world" and Elden Ring delivered, so I was very happy with the game. It was Dark Souls, but with "You see that mountain? You can walk to it, climb it, and fight a boss on it."

Elden Ring is the best adventure game since Dark Souls, since it does the exact same thing of letting you pick a variety of paths from the start, but also having them make geographical sense together (unlike Dark Souls 2, which is more of a theme park than an adventure in that regard).
If you didn't enjoy it then you won't be able to quantify why beyond "it was too much adventure and I got bored of adventuring - I actually just wanted a short little romp through one castle, not a grand quest across a whole country."

Those are PVP numbers and yes, Elden Ring's PVP is not the same as Dark Souls' because they removed one-on-one invasions. Mind you that one-on-one duels are still a thing, but the average invaderfag has no interest in a fair one on one - they want to curbstomp noobs in their tricked out endgame gear (that they hacked in because it's such a pain in the ass to actually beat the game at level 1).

Insane take, the point is obviously open world to Elden Ring means little more than scaling a typical level up to a massive one so you're mostly pointlessly wandering for the majority of the game in between actually designed areas so they could stick the open world tag on it.

It doesn't even look good. Assets are reused to a comical degree. The game's color palette look likes a generic mmo. Shadow Of The Colossus does it correctly, they asked what they want an open world to be and they designed a beautiful world which isn't padded with pointless monsters but trumps Elden Ring in scale and rewards you with battles worthy of the journey.

In comparison the dungeons in Elden Ring are often shortlived and straightforward, on top of, again, assets being reused up, down, left, right and center. I get it's a lot of work, but the approach just sucks.

>>731170726
>the point is obviously open world to Elden Ring means little more than scaling a typical level up to a massive one
Incorrect: the point of Elden Ring's open world is to demonstrate the scale of the journey you're undertaking. It is the exact same as Dark Souls, with an interconnected world, but on a scale beyond that of Dark Souls. Instead of taking an Imp to Anor Londo, you see Anor Londo in the far distance and actually trek there while facing numerous adversaries along the way. You're right that a lot of that space is empty, but that's not a problem because its purpose is to be scenery. That's why you have Torrent.
>Shadow Of The Colossus does it correctly
This is just perplexingly stupid. I love Shadow of the Colossus but SotC is a puzzle game with a massive empty open world between your 16 puzzles. It and Elden Ring have almost the exact same color palette. SotC has, statistically, far more reuse of assets because they had to fit that huge of a game onto a single PS2 disk. Honestly what the fuck are you even on about here? The open world is a massive pain in the ass for SotC, which is why you're so grateful that you can skip it for the speedruns beating the game.
If you don't like the Elden Ring bosses then fine, but that's purely subjective and more of a sign that you finally got beaten to the point that it was no longer fun for you. You wanted to win on the third try (not the first - that's too easy, and not the fifth - that's too hard) but it took longer than that. You forced yourself to go into every crypt even though you didn't enjoy them and they're all purely optional. These are you problems, not weaknesses of the game.
>>
>>731162675
It could be considered cliche if it was something a thousand other games did, which obviously isn't the case to anyone who has a sense of time. Fromsoft doing their own original idea over and over doesn't fit the definition of cliche, but of motif.

It's beyond garbage. When I played elden ring I literally didn't care about the quests because they all end the same way no matter what so why even bother aside from caring about an item they drop or something for a specific build that uses it.
