>https://techraptor.net/gaming/news/ftl-like-void-war-dmcad-allegedly-by-games-workshop-0>In the grim dark world of Warhammer 40k it appears that the masters at Games Workshop have sent out their legal arbiters again. This time the arbiters (or as others may call them, lawyers,) have fired off a Void War DMCA, taking down the video game from Steam. >Released last June, Void War is an FTL-like roguelite game that heavily homages the Games Workshop created Warhammer 40k. In fact, when I wrote about it as part of Steam Next Fest in February 2025 I said that it seemed to have "scrubbed off" references, as in changing names and other elements sometimes called 'filing off the serial numbers'.>While not a huge success, Void War had done pretty well for itself on Steam, until last night when the game was mysteriously removed from the PC store front. At first there was no comment from the developer, and then a general post made that they were working with Steam to rectify the situation. Speculation abounded, but this afternoon, they provided a more in-depth response confirming that it was indeed a DMCA takedown.>According to Tundra Interactive, they have not received any other communication from Games Workshop (and in fact Void War is up on Itch.Io still) and Valve provided merely the information of Games Workshop's public facing infringements inbox, and the name 'Mal Reynolds'. >For sci-fi fans, that name may ring a bell, as it is indeed the same as the main character from Firefly, which has led to Tundra Interactive wondering if someone else filed the Void War DMCA takedown. Their attempts to contact Games Workshop to confirm have so far failed to be replied to. In the meantime, Tundra Interactive is going through the DMCA process and says they will, "share further updates when we have confirmed information."
Deserved. Glad they're bodying this clear theft of their IP. They need to hit Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers next.
>>731452604this literally looks like a Mod for FTL, is this chinense? do the developers simply have no shame in ripping off something so blatlanty?
>>731452764Chinese don't rip off other games, this is clearly American.
>>731452764No one gives a shit about FTL. It's Games Workshop going after them.
>>731452801>Chinese don't rip off other gamesLol you're a funny guy
>>731452854Cope however you'd like.
If you bought it, will steam still let you play it or do I need to pirate it?
>>731453123DMCA'd games are removed from your Steam account by law.
>>731453194But Steam will refund you... Right?
>>731452801is the strategy to just post obvious falsehoods for long enough that people start to believe them? or what?
>>731453262Why would it? You buy a temporary license from Steam and they can revoke it at any time.If you want to actually own games, you should have bought it on Epic.
>>731453262I don't really care, I'll just pirate it to be safe. My money still went to the dev.
>>731453328okay timmy, go back to x (formerly twitter)
>>731452889>>731452801
>>731452604Another W for the good guys!
>>731452801Kill yourself.
sorry but what does GW have to do with Firefly?
>>731452604Hopefully it comes back. While it was kind of shamelessly a legally not Warhammer 40k skin applied over legally not FTL gameplay it was pretty fun and scratches that FTL itch. For how popular FTL is Void war is surprisingly one of the only games to straight up borrow the gameplay loop. The emphasis on crew to crew combat with equipment slots is a fun twist on the FTL gameplay loop. I do wish they had not simplified ship navigation however. Honestly my bigest complaint was that it did not do enough to show off and flesh out the grimdark setting, FTL gave its world more personality. It is probably Games Workshop, one of their fans, or a troll that filed the complaint to Steam. I doubt Subset Games cares.
>>731452801Literal Chinese spy posting this.
>>731452604>Even the HUD is 1:1 copied off FTLIf anything, the FTL devs got a much stronger case for plagiarism here than WH40K.
>>731452604>20$ mod for a 10$ gameGood riddance.
>>731452604>badly rip-off FTL>badly copy 40k>get copy right claimedshock and horror! The game has beyond not-warp-but-warp magic not a hint of originality in gameplay or setting. And it even manages to be more boring than the original. The only reason it had an audience is because warhammerfaggots would buy a bag of rocks if it had a Marneus Calgar sticker on it.
>>731452764IP law is already plenty strong enough. I think it should exist, but it's actually too strong.Even then, there is no law protecting against "rip offs" and there shouldn't be.
>>731454718wasn't there a rumor that FTL had patented their game or something
>>731453262If they get removed from your account, then definitely. You might have to contact support if this actually happens, though.
>>731454982You can't patent game mechanics.
lots of bootlickers in this thread...
>>731455085You unfortunately can, but you really shouldn't because there is no benefit to the public for keeping it exclusive to the filing company and really you can't keep it secret either. The purpose of patents is they encourage companies to share inventions with the public, not "I came up with this obvious idea first so therefore everyone else can fuck off". Like the LOTR rival system had no business being patented, they didn't come up with the concept of "rivals".
>>731452604>By games workshopof coursethey need to pay a loicense to make shitty ripoffs first
>>731452604Based FTL devs and James Workshop
>>731455190Not technically. Game mechanics are considered math and therefore natural law. They patent specific implementations, which are a lot more narrow than it might seem. It does have a cancerous chilling effect as people would be hesitant to implement their own systems even if it's technically legal.
If you don't defend your IP, you don't deserve it.If this copied any Snoy or Bing Bing Wahoo franchise this shit copy would have been merrily bodied.
>>731454982that would seem pretty friggin dubious considering they have absolutely no desire to make a sequel to FTL
>>731452764if this game was not by slavs then I am mickey mouse
>>731455186just get it on itch you nigger. If you want tumblr-fanfic-tier mod of a game reinstated buy an ad for your change.org campaign.
>>731455186bootlick this *unzips*
>>731452801>Me anon>Me make joke>Me put peepee in your coke
>>731452604This shit doesn't have an ounce of originality but GW are massive faggots anyway.
>>731454859>badly rip off ftlIt improves on FTL>badly rip off 40kGames wokeslop doesn't own Gothic sci fi or space monarchies
>>731452604shit was a FTL mod that you paid for. who cares.
>female custodes confirmed>non binary eldars confirmed>blacks in Raven guard confirmed It’s the best time to be a Games Wokeshop slopper.
>>731458664Why lying on the internet?Too poor to buy miniatures?
You did beat the game on Torment 12 before the DMCA right anon? You aren't a enormous fucking faggot are you?It is a fun game though and I hope it comes back.It feels more like an FTL 2 than multiverse did since they actually added new systems to the game. Not to say multiverse sucks, but its pretty much just a reskin/rewrite with some new weapons and species and their barely disguised fetishesVoid War actually added things like moving weapon rooms and equipment for your crew (with no crew limit as well, which can be fun).Gett lucky and making a god characters is so much fun, such as getting two chainswords and a flamethrower on the Barbarian (the only character that can equip three weapons) for insane DPS
>>731460350I'm a huge fag, my limit is Torment 4.
>>731452764Warhammer isn't even a thing in China
>>731452764The funny thing is, FTL is Chinese.
>>731452801>Chinese don't rip off
>>731452801BAO XING DENG WON LO BEI DIN SUNG!
>>731458664>eldarsSecondary
>>731464739Not really. It was made by westerners who happened to be living in China at the time.
>>731452604>rip off FTL>rip off WH40kIt was only a matter of time until one of them called bullshit
