Video games are not a hobby, they are a pastime (pass the time). There is no personal development associated with playing video games. They give you no marketable skills and they are not transferable.

Making video games is a hobby, playing them is not.
>>
>>731460770
I dont care. Being productive for a disgusting society is not worthwhile. I barely play video games anymore anyways, but 48 hours of straight of playing vidya is still more valuable to me than six months of working to contribute to (((society)))

>>
>There is no personal development associated with playing video games. They give you no marketable skills and they are not transferable.
That's your problem, you see hobbies as this sort of transactional thing: what can your hobbies earn for you? Social status? Money?
What I seek in hobbies is personal entertainment. Something for MY gratification, not that of society at large.
>>
>>731461004
Hobbies are things like mountain biking, pottery, or metalworking. They provide you with real skills, physical fitness, a social life, money AND gratification
Video games do not provide that
>>
>>731461142
According to your logic, reading books isn't an hobby as well
>>
>>731461142
No those are things you get out of a job. A hobby is literally the opposite. A thing you do because you enjoy it, regardless of what you "get out of it".
Fishing as a hobby is a good time even if you come back empty-handed.

Honestly he's right about the creation vs consumption thing. A guy who dedicates thousands of hours modding his favourite game and gets to share his creations with other players gets way more respect from me than a guy with thousands of hours in lol or cs.
I play a few hours of vidya every week to relax but calling it a hobby is both cringe and childish. If you love vidya so much go create one.

Nigger I guarantee you that those will cost more money than even building a PC, while offering little to no returns. Meanwhile you've got retards becoming millionaires by streaming.

Shut the fuck up. Agreed on the rest.
>>
>>731461257
>A hobby is literally the opposite. A thing you do because you enjoy it, regardless of what you "get out of it".
That's a pastime 'an activity that someone does regularly for enjoyment rather than work'
Fishing is a hobby, because it involves more than just sitting on a couch
>>
>>731460770
That's fine. I never considered it a hobby. Its just something I like to do.
>>
>>731460770
Only retards who cant turn what they watch or play into skills by observation and connecting ideas would ever say this.

>watch a documentary about a teenager who shot up a school - says they were beaten as a child
>make the connection that beating kids isnt that great of an idea
same shit happens in games, except with different concepts and skills
>>
>>731460770
Hobbies where you're actively creating something will always be on a higher tier to me than hobbies where you're just consuming something. Like game development vs. playing games. I don't really give a shit what other people do, but I like to make stuff and find it fun. Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time if I play video games all day or watch netflix all day.
>>
>>731461142
If you do it for "real skills" then it's not a hobby, it's an education.
If you do it for money then it's not a hobby, it's a job.
If you're poor enough you need to work multiple jobs, you don't get to whine about what everyone else does with their time.

it can be both, people sell their paintings and pottery

Where's the personal development in stamp collecting, the traditional "example hobby"?
>>
>>731462074
That's called working part-time self-employment because your actual full-time job doesn't pay enough.
>>
>>731462010
Depends on if selling is the goal or not. If your hobby is making pottery, simply for the sake of it, it's going to pile up somewhere or you can sell it.
>>
>>731461142

>>
>>731460770
It's just as transferable as model building, basketball, hiking, and watching movies.
>those teach you skills
Videogames teach you social skills and critical thinking, and you absorb cultural knowledge from it. The people around me are frequently surprised that I know about things that I learned from videogames. It's just like how building Gundam models doesn't teach you how to build houses. The primary point of a hobby is that it's recreational.

A man's life doesn't revolve around how much value he brings to women.

>>
>>731460770
I agree with the differentiation between consumption-centered hobbies and creation-centered hobbies, and that at a general baseline it is more admirable to try to create than to simply consume, because it shows agency and drive.
However there's a goycattle thought line throughout that entire post, which is the idea that hobbies should give something back to society, the hobbies that person holds in high regard seem to be the ones that she can immediately look and clap at and go like "Wow, you're so good at that.", because the poster seems to treat people with skills as their own personal entertainers. The idea in general is sound, the person is just retarded and probably a woman, and she injected retarded woman thoughts into a perfectly fine conclusion.

Why the endless push to shame people for playing games, when overwhelming majority of normalfags doesn't have hobbies either and nobody says a thing about it? I had this mindset when I was young and broke. Now I have money. A hobby is not something done for money, but if it can make a little money to offset the cost then great
>>
>>731460770
If your hobby involves being physically active, then it's just an exercise that you enjoy.
If your hobby makes you money, then it's a side gig that you enjoy doing .
If you're having involves collecting and the things you're collecting have value, then you're investing, especially if the price of whatever you're collecting has increased in value over time.
Only if your hobby provides pure entertainment and no other forms of enrichment is it truly a pure hobby.

There's something juvenile about American nerd culture. In Japan nerds can be stable normal adults, in western countries nerds are always some kind of homosexual tranny freak.

There's something in the water and I think it's the same type of infantilization of adults you see in people who call their dogs cats and plants their "furr children". Makes me cringe. Devalue real children while turning yourselves into adult children

There are plenty of stable normal adults with "nerdy" hobbies (freaks here like to call them normalfags), and plenty of unstable weirdos with those hobbies in Japan. NEETs in Japan being unable to function has been a big problem there even.

Not really, border and frontier have strictly different uses with one referring to the separation and the other referring to the space that makes up the separation itself ie the space between countries.

A pastime and a hobby are the exact same thing.

True for maybe 50% of women, the other 50% of women are shutins just like men are except instead of playing videogames they watch tiktoks and YouTube all day.

As far as broad averages go:
>men
Generally have hobbies that are solitary or competitive (gaming, sports fandom, building shit, collecting). Object or skill-focused stuff.
>women
They more often have hobbies that are social (group fitness, volunteering, yoga) or arts and crafts related.
>>
And yet here you are….Curious…
>>
>>731463927
True but I'd like to add that women like things related to beauty. Dresses, sometimes things like glassworking, figure skating, drawing, makeup and skincare and also things related to emotions like psychology, true crime, romance novels.

That describes 90% of women. Men are more likely to enjoy drastically different things from one another while women are more similar to each other. Probably one of the reasons it's easier for them to socialize

You have to go even further than that. Even those 'productive' hobbies are worthless unless you aim for greatness and mastery of it. There's no point in playing an instrument, drawing or writing unless your goal is to become successful with them.
Strumming some chords on guitar as you play for yourself, some acquaintances and maybe a small band that nobody listens to is just a waste of time.

>>731460770
that pic is fucking trash
not cause the point is making is wrong, it's not, but the word he used to put things under the same umbrella does not mean what he thinks it does.
By DEFINITION, a hobby is something someone does as a form of pleaseure to relax in their free time to pass the time, and depending on the dictionary you want to use, one major defining aspect is exactly that hobbies are done passively.
On the other hand, what he describes as hobbies that take effort and reqire skills along developing them, they're not hobbies at all, they're passions, and the term "interest" is where the two usually distinct definitions overlap.
As example, reading a book is a hobby, writing a book is a passion, and reading a book which furthers your knowledge is an interest.
Collectng pottery is a hobby, making pottery is a passion, studying pottery(as in, informing yourself about how different culture make and use pottery, etc) is an interest.
So of course passions and interests should be regarded higher than hobbies, cause they're not hobbies.

And to all of you retards who think hobbies are an active thing that require and help devoping skills while the passive consuming is "pasttime", you're objectively wrong, take any synonymous and contraried dictionary, and you'll see that "pastime" is a synonym for "hobby" and viceversa, as well as both being synonyms for "recreation".
