Ehh it's really not that bad honestly, it's not an egregious game that's trying to virtue signal to you, but I'd say the character designs and their personalities are kind of cringy and not really its strong point.

Just the overall game progression is really well done, simple mechanics like fishing are well implemented. It's a game you should at least try out before you write it off is all I'm saying. It's worth overlooking any kind of things that put you off at first glance. There's a reason many people are hooked to it, it's pretty brilliantly designed and feature rich compared to most games of that variety.

For instance, I got my mother to play Half-Life. She got past Chapter 3 just fine, but she didn't find it very interesting. But the tower defense games I got her into, she likes a lot. I would assume this is because they're more strategy oriented and less intense. And she's much better at those games than I am.

That's most successful game ever. When's the last time the AAA industry actually innovated on known genres like shooter, RPG, 3D platformer, etc?

Indies have done more innovative things for the field than any big studio in the past 20 years, and there's a lot more examples than Minecraft. The big companies are just making sequels and rehashing the same games over and over to churn out money. Indies are some of the few willing to take risks and try out experimental games. Think of something like Hotline Miami, Deep Rock Galactic, Baba is You, even something like Among Us takes a lot of gaming conventions and flips them on their head, and became wildly popular because of it.

When the biggest releases of the year are Hollow Knight and Deltarune, and a gacha game, what does that say for the industry at large? That non-indies dropped the ball.
