Highguard wasn’t “controversial” because it’s bad or good, it was controversial because the internet is fake now and everyone pretending otherwise is coping hard, game drops and within literal hours it’s already decided that it’s either the worst thing ever made or a hidden masterpiece being “silenced”, thousands of reviews instantly from people who clearly didn’t play it or don’t even exist, same buzzwords, same outrage, same defenses, same NPC arguments like they were compiled and deployed, review bombing used to be players pushing back and now it’s just noise warfare, bots bombing bots, PR teams fighting activists, discord raids vs marketing astroturf, none of it organic, none of it human, you try to talk about mechanics or performance and get buried because real discussion is slow and doesn’t farm engagement, the algorithm wants extremes so extremes get amplified until that’s all that exists, no middle ground, no nuance, just prepackaged opinions slamming into each other at machine speed, Dead Internet Theory isn’t “everyone is a bot” it’s worse, it’s that humans are irrelevant, your opinion doesn’t matter unless it fits a script that can be repeated a thousand times, Highguard didn’t get review bombed because gamers are mad, it got review bombed because every new release is just raw material for automated outrage loops, scores are meaningless now, comments are meaningless, “community reaction” is meaningless, it’s all engagement slop, if the internet was alive this game would’ve had arguments and flamewars and actual disagreement, instead it had instant narrative lock-in and automated screaming, you’re not watching people argue about a game, you’re watching systems talk to themselves and you’re just another warm body posting inside the corpse and calling it discourse
