Hot take: after decades of thinking about it I've decided I don't like the thing being able to infect any being from just a single cell getting into their system. I think it's too unfair and turns what I like about the setting (the thing is hiding, it could be anyone of us, don't let it make more of itself, don't let it escape, don't trust anyone) into straight up futile nonsense (the thing is hiding, but you've both been breathing the same air for days now so it never really mattered, you're already it, and this isn't the big plot twist this is established minute one so there was never any hope). I understand that it doesn't -have- to be fair, but imo it doesn't add any extra merits to the horror that the other method (using prey's biomass to slowly make a perfect copy) didn't already add. People underestimate how insanely easy biological contamination is, if the thing works like then there's no story, it just wins instantaneously and the cool monstrous forms have no purpose outside of aesthetics.The thing's only mechanism of assimilation should be isolating its prey from the group, luring it into a dark corner, slowly assimilating its biomass to make a perfect replica (period during which it's vulnerable, like a crab shedding its skin), then infiltrating the group to play mind games and repeat the cycle. The thing would reproduce by gathering more biomass than it needs (either by killing multiple prey at once, or if there's already multiple things, merging them together like if it was the slither movie). This adds weight and meaning to the composite monstrosities in the film beyond looking really gross and cool, and puts a very real sense of sacrifice to the thing splitting a singular disguise into smaller chunks so that one can escape when cornered (it gets away, but it pays a big price in terms of available biomass).
