They do, western historians occasionally like to present devshirme as evidence of ottoman egalitarianism, for providing the subjugated populations with an avenue for rising in the ranks. No, completely unironically.

But when the canadians forced natives to go to school it was literally genocide and a heckin' colonialism.

No, it's just that Tolkien is their only exposure to it. Even in European countries, unless you go out of your way to learn it you're not really going to be exposed to it more than you're exposed to Tolkien bullshit.

Which is something I find hilariously ironic.
Tolkien originally set out to make a fantasy for England, since most fantasy bar Robin Hood was either Scottish or Welsh because the Norman elite purposely suppressed English culture.
But in doing so, he nailed the final nail in the coffin.

Nobody thinks of Ents, Orcs, Elfs, Dwarfs, (they even use the Tolkien created terms Elves and Dwarves), Witches, Mages, Giants, Dragons (and so on, I think my point is made) as English culture. When you hear Ents you think of Tolkien's fantasy attacking Isengard, not the forests English people wouldn't walk through because of stories about seeing the Ents patroling them.

I know he abandoned the "English folklore" eventually but it's funny how his initial motivation is the complete opposite of what he accomplished.

>They do, western historians occasionally like to present devshirme as evidence of ottoman egalitarianism
The fuck?
Egalitarianism?
LMAO
Kidnapping children and brainwashing them into becoming part of a military machine ain't any shit like that.
The rules being loosened over the centuries with Janissaries becoming a desirable profession didn't come from the Ottoman court; it came from the Janissaries themselves undermining the entire Empire to chip away power for themselves little by little, so as to benefit the subjugated nations back home in the Balkans. Homes that, mind you, had a system where native populations were forcibly driven from cities by the Ottomans in order to cut their avenue for upwards social dynamics and education since a city was the place for that. Instead they forced illiteracy upon the people with exceptions for a minority such as Spahije for example; and this created the only inverse pyramid in Europe when it comes to the age of revolutions, nationalism, and liberalism; because there was no middle and upper class to spread it, it had to all come from the peasant class unlike the rest of Europe. That's 400 years of cultural stagnation when it comes to organizational sciences; and the churches having to take over education and building libraries away from Ottoman sight.
This wasn't Egalitarianism in any sense or form. This unique situation is why the Balkans have the unique property of liberalism and conservatism co-existing in a schizoid way that the Western mind can't grasp due to very differing histories.
>>
>>731844456
Reading about the cultural differences between pre-civil war southerners and yankees as a euro reminded me of the cultural distance between western euros and balkanites. Guilt cultures and shame cultures can't help but talk past each other.

You can't find them because they don't sell, but they exist. Do not underestimate the power of the algorithm when it comes to anything reaching someone else's eye. There's a shitload of fantasy books on amazon that only have like 2 or 3 purchases because the author only knows how to do the production work, not the marketing. For everything created that you see, there's probably 1000 more that you don't, simply because it's hidden from you to promote profits.

There's an interesting village in eastern Serbia with "haunted" vampire watermill, but it's completely unknown to international public because there are no interesting medieval castles, just wooden houses, rocks and sound of wind. Aside from that, Slavic mythology is pretty wild but underutilized even here because it was deemed pagan and anti-christian and because of that we know more about the Greek or roman gods and myths, than what our ancestors believed in

Trvke. I always thought if they had a season two they would actually explain how the planet didn't evolve naturally but was designed by something or someone just because how every creature had a weird use case or overly complicated method of existing.
