Let's be real here, "real" videogames have stopped existing over a decade ago with a few outliers here and there. The prime of vidya is long gone. If you want to play real video games, you have to go back to pre-seventh gen for the most part or be lucky with the occasional indie or smaller AA game.

I think AI are comparable to dragons. Super intelligent and super capable, but lacking the human soul and spirit, which is why humans ultimately triumphed over dragons despite being individually far inferior. Because humans can think for themselves and work together however they want instead of being programmed into accepting a strict hierarchy. This was the lore of genshin impact.

>>
>>731947480
This is giving AI far too much credit. Dragons would keep being dragons if humans didn’t fuck with them. AI’s supposed intelligence is entirely dependent on direct human contribution. It’s a parasite, that chews up and spits back what we feed it, with no ability, brain soul or otherwise, to understand the information it’s spouting.

art is more than just what youre directly looking at. art is expression. theres a reason they call it arts and humanities. its the pinnacle of mankind and our intelligence. it represents our sapience. if you take it away, humans are nothing but waste and pollution machines.
looking at ai generated slop gives you no kind of feel unless youre an npc. theres no expression, no emotion, no humans that spent years or decades of their life chasing their passion through ups and downs; obstacles. it's completely empty

OK. I've still got a backlog of 100 lifetimes worth of vidya, I'll get to it eventually bro.

We're more laughing at out of touch investors who see tech capable of making walking sims and thinks it can make the leap to generating the literally hundreds of animations and states required in any game actually worth playing. The complexity of a proper game is orders of magnitude more involved than generating terrain, a skybox, a model, and a wall cycle.

>Has same limitations of a video model
>Cannot be exported, is generated live
>No way of planning the game ahead because it predicts next frame from previous frames
>Input lag
>Hitboxes and collision hits decided not by rigid calculation but by AI vibes
>Showcases being significantly higher quality then YouTubers showcasing it
>Costs 250 a month to play for 2 minutes
I have genuinely easier time imagining LLM chat bot with enough breakthroughs becoming AGI then this replacing anything besides walking sim demos. In 10 years we will probably have AI agents developing the whole games by just coding vibe coding them, as well as all office, law, finance and medical workers (except nurses) replaced.

>I couldn't imagine this technology literally a year ago
Because you are retarded, we had AI video of good quality 1.5 years ago with the first Sora that wasn’t released. This is just your basic video model but with lowered quality to make it run in real time “in a datacenter because your gaming PC couldn’t handle it” and with input controls. Each frame is generated after the previous one was finished so just add a prompt in middle of the generation to make it change walking directions and you suddenly have Genie 3. You are also double retarded because this tech is half a year old, they just released it now to their biggest paypiggies.

When AGI happens we are fucked. Get that through your skull, you will just become unemployable and the idea that corporations that no longer need employees will willingly increase their taxes to fund your UBI so you can buy from them is comical.
>But who will buy stuff if not people?
B2 fucking B buddy. Businesses that sell to other businesses, the military complex, further AI research or to the elites will survive, businesses that sell to consumers will go bankrupt. Robots and AI are cheaper then human employees, but not free, so you still in theory have employees to pay and companies providing services or selling raw materials to the robot and AI datacenter companies. Economy can go on without consumers, it will just restructure itself.

I didn’t expect it to write code, make pictures or pass written tests back in 2021. In 2022 I was indeed blown away with getting access to GPT 3.5 and watching image gens evolve. However since then I have not been blown away, maybe in 2024 with Sora 1 but that’s it mostly. Everything is just something I fully expected, sometimes a year earlier, sometimes several years later, for example I fully expected AI for 3D models to be decent by now, but all it can do is 3D mesh that has terrible topology and sometimes does not even follow the photo example and just melts meshes together even if you use the parts separator, and that is not mentioning any of the other stuff it’s lacking. However Nano Banana was kind of surprising in how good it was, but not something I thought was impossible year ago. Reminder that Anthropocene CEO said 9 months ago that within 6 months from them all code would be AI generated, and today programmers are still firmly employed, even if they are H1Bs.

I am "disillusioned" precisely because I work with AI every single day, have a good idea of how it operates internally and what the limitations are.
The video in the OP is not impressive because it is simply the result of throwing ever more data, hardware and money at a complex problem (to make very little headway in it at an exponentially scaling cost).

Not even close to the amount it costs to operate. Even now Altman still can't answer how exactly OpenAI is supposed to generate revenue, the best he's got is claiming that AI will eventually be advanced enough that he can just ask it how to make money. This is a completely real response that he had, and the fact that he wasn't laughed out of the room should tell you how deep in the trenches the investor class is.
>>
>>731970074
We're already there. The rate of improvement is logarithmic, and we're already near the top of that curve. A single consumer grade GPU can produce results 90% as good as a cloud model with billions of parameters.
No one's going to pay $250 a month to get ten or fifteen minutes at a time at best, of a generic boilerplate character controller in an incoherent environment that changes every time you turn around. (Let's be honest, it'd cost even more if they weren't eating a lot of the expense to drive adoption.) There's no market for this shit.

>In the year 2020 did you expect AI to generate fully explorable persistent worlds by 2026? If you did, you were pretty much the only one. For everyone else, this is beyond our expectations

I agree but the fear is that at some point this tech will stagnate when it comes to entertainment and can't be pushed any further.

Meanwhile A.I. is already doing incredible things that could save or destroy us depending on how it's used.

Worst case scenario, a Skynet like entity will try to eradicate humanity.

Best case scenarios is that it will turn out like Colossus: The Forbin Project where a supercomputer takes control of humanity with the threat of nuclear destruction if we don't abide by its rules.

Clearly, they don't. Or else Disney+ wouldn't be struggling. ESPN and Hulu should be popular enough that they drive adoption. But the vast majority of the market doesn't have enough disposable income to spend on more than one or two subscriptions a month. And certainly, no one's going to pay such a premium price for something that's barely even a video game, that spits out shit that superficially looks like other, better video games you can actually own for less than the cost of one month of the service.

>>731975135
AGI isn't happening through LLMs and image models, man. It literally can't. Even the best, most powerful version of Nano Banana still can't understand things that don't exist in its training data, but follow intuitively from things that are in the training data. It still has the Wine Glass problem.

These neural network based systems are really just an insanely convoluted, lossy encoding scheme that multiplexes data together in a novel way.
They work by repeatedly finding a vector of best fit in an encoded n-dimensional space, and meandering through that space one token at a time, offset by whatever seed it's given. Needless to say, that's not how our brains work. It's just a system that encodes the appearance of a plausible output based on a given input without any comprehension or processing happening.
That's why longer sessions with LLMs get weird and AI generated video and audio can't stay coherent for long. The more information you feed it as input, the further that path through the n-dimensional space gets from its stable home base, and even if it were possible to know the exact token necessary to undo all that wandering, it still wouldn't be enough to get it back in working order, because the seed and the context window would still be fucked up.
>>
>>731975864
If it needs to be trained on existing games I don't see how you could reliably introduce new gameplay. Like that dark souls clone I've seen. How would you make a new enemy that is fun to fight and has the same AI every time? You could train it on dark souls but then you just have a dark souls copy.

>>731976161
I liken it to a spinning plate trick, sure it's impressive at first, but it's eventually going to start tilting, even if you manually get it back up to speed, every spin is nudging the plate away from the balance point. So it's either going to eventually slow down enough to fall off the balance point, or its center of mass is going to be too far off to one side and it'll tip anyway. Your only two options are to either catch it and start it all over again, or to let it fall and smash on the floor. And by the time you've done that a few times, the novelty wears off and no one thinks you're cool anymore.

AI is entirely propped up by false promises that it'll lead to AGI, and by the gross misrepresentation of how it actually works to the general public, and especially the shareholders who decide what lives and what dies.

Google ai crap uses energy every question, prompt, generation, and jeet using it thousands of times a day, with not way to make money off it.

Gamedev here (actually, triple A out of Austria)

10 years from now videogames will revert to lower than PS1 quality geometry under the hood, the barebones for representation of skeletal meshes and terrain and objects etc.
There will be a hyper advanced AI later that runs over the top, with local asset libraries and models created just to train it on what things should look like. Artists will still make character models but they will be just CG tier for training data, not game mesh as we are used to.

All your systems grunt will instead go to proper physics, simulation and AI (as in, the NPC ai).
Imagine basically 6090 GPU power but focused on PS1 polygons and how much it could do. I'm talking beating hearts and blood, even gut bacteria simulated in every human on screen. Every building is truly built like a real structure with internal studs, nails, insulation etc, all of this accounted for and destructable.

Within 5 years from now it will approach a visual fidelity 1:1 with reality but the rest of the sytems will take time. People will be fully Matrix'd by 2040.

I do know that once this paradigm shit occurs, new GPU hardware won't even be able to play old videogames. It's very likely when nvidia shelves the RTX line and has the new mainline gpu series "AITX" these gpu's will be hyper tailored for this new low local fidelity > high AI layer fidelity.

You won't be able to buy a GPU in 10 years that let's you play your old games. Everyone needs to make sure they keep their current hardware in good condition because there is a chance it's all AI from a certain point on.

That's not what's going to happen. There will be mega AI centre boxes put all over the world, similar to what 5G towers etc are. Basically AI super computers placed in your area that handle everything, it won't be some central server on the planet at least not for a while. Billions of people can't all stream AI data like this.

IT will start with a combination of local computing and then delegating to nearby towers and then eventually beamed down from space.

Yes? You didn't? Why not? We've known since gpt3 that you can scale persistence quite far by adding more RAM. We've also had several years of optimising transformer models for RAM use.
Haven't you been paying attention?
The problem is that they still lose coherence eventually, because the stored data starts to conflict, and even the simplest persistent 3D world with almost no interactivity requires a huge amount of RAM. This demo is just the logical extreme of pushing current tech to it's absolute limits on the most powerful hardware available. It doesn't represent a true breakthrough in technology.

>>
>>731988579
I'll be impressed if they manage to get it working for more than 60 seconds
and it actually lets you interact with things and remembers your progress
and have global rules/systems/mechanics that are persistent and feel like you're playing a game

>computer - generate a game about reclaiming land in populated city centers
>appeasing gaia/mother nature lets me upgrade my demolition/landscaping tools as I convert more area to green hills and forests
>start game with sledgehammer and a bag of compost
>mid game I have a killdozer/dumptuck hybrid that ofloads dirt, sprinkles seeds and auto-plants saplings behind it
>late game I'm piloting a Bagger-288 through central london and leaving a trail of nature behind me

how many years until this is a reality?

It has exactly 0 applications to video games unless you manage to make the context window infinite (such AI breakthrough is big and impactful enough it could make LLMs AGI straight up) and manage to replace videogames entirely. Genie 3 world in unusable because ITS A FUCKING VIDEO, not a series of 3D models. It’s a research demo designed to generate data for AI agents to better do stuff in the real world, and the people building it do understand that and aren’t trying to convince people this is future of gaming like you mongrel.

I'm sure it'll get better but I won't be too impressed if it happens 20-30 years from now, and possibly gets powercrept by an even newer technology

Good AI artists are the same people as regular artists. As soon as most regular artists realize this and are willing to make the switch, all the talentless hacks selling AI on patreon now will be shoved aside as the competition to make perfect content becomes extremely fierce
>>
>>731999627
well quoting the techbros from this thread, "you wouldn't have thought of AI being capable of this back in 2020" so imagine what budding technology that's in early stages in 2026 could become unimaginably powerful in just few years time?

Also fellating AI as "technology with limitless potential" is boring. It shows little understanding of trends and aspirations of companies. It's a similar spiel to gassing up computers back in the 60s - yeah they ended up being huge and doing a lot, but somehow we don't have shit like cyborgs yet, despite claims we might get them within a decade many times. Hell, we still don't have realistic graphics.

The best application for this technology is making fake games for like NCIS or Law & Order or some shit that they can throw in the background of scenes for 10 seconds while the stereotype gamer character talks about getting all the high scores in an MMO, without having to pay royalties for the rights to show a real existing game.
Not a single time I've seen these clips that're supposedly going to "revolutionize gaming" does it look like an actual video game that you can interact with on any meaningful level. It's like whoever made the prompts has never touched a video game in their life, and only knows what they are through proxy of their nephews and grandkids.

Yeah, the few artists I've seen generate art I'd consider good, were people who were creating art before the boom.
Well, at least one of them went full sloppa and while his art looked good at first, now produces stuff that's just bad. Although he was experimenting with new tools so I can give benefit of the doubt to my "AI makes you worse at art" theory.

I will simply not play a fully AI generated game I don't give a fuck about technology or whatever, if a divine spark of human spirit was not included in the making I don't care, playing the synthesized product would be simply wasting my time I could use to do ANYTHING else, sleeping would be more productive. Something like AI generated games only could work for porno/hentai games, like rape simulators or something, because it is already a sin and once you play a little and jack off, the shame would naturally kick in like it does now
>>
AI disgusts me at a primal level of my being. A drawing made by a 4 year old with crayon or watercolor has more artistic merit and humanity in it than anything produced by a machine. Human hands, emotion, and intellect create the most brilliant things, and AI merely steals it to create the worse kind of copies of humanities brilliance.

making things manually with your hands is just the physical aspect of making art. In the end, all that matters for the viewer is the imagery / final result. Which depends on the artist's style, creativity, and personal physical skill at drawing or whatever. Now replace the physical skill with prompting / language skills and you have AI art. I doubt text prompting will be the main way to do it for long; it is just the first, most clumsy way to communicate what you want to it.

And you can be good at the physical aspect of art while being shit at creativity and soul. Those are the people who really lose out on this transition to AI. Artists who are already creative and visionary gain from it, once they accept using it.
>>
>>732007602
AI art is not art. It's a series of learning modules that have stolen material from millions of actual artists and then regurgitates it in the most unethical and unpleasant way imagineable.
