It's just rounds resting tip to end instead of side to side like a normal mag. There have been occasional tube-mag rifles instead of scatterguns, and while they may not be ideal compared to even things like lever-action or bolt-action, the only real reason they don't occur more frequently is just because we use centerfire primers, so the very tip of the typically conical or rounded cartridges could, even if only hypothetically, cause them to fire. It's also why shotguns haven't got that issue at all, because shot uses that cylindrical shape with a flat head.
