Mudrunner had a system on console where the gearbox was a 3D object on the interface and when you held down a button your analogue stick would be used to physically move the gearstick between the gears.
Basically any time work is put into making a device feel like a real machine you operate.

Along that vein, aiming systems where the gun isn't locked to the center of the screen. Either floating crosshairs like Arma or the gun having its own interface element separate to the crosshairs showing where the gun is in relation to where you're pointing, like in Helldivers 2.

Inventory tetris is the best for handling large quantities of items, everything is perfectly legible at a glance and it's fun to efficiently stuff your pack full of equipment and loot.
Encumbrance-based systems are less soulful and a pain in the ass when you have to browse through a list of items to find something you can drop, only to pick something up ten steps later and become overloaded again.

I dont know how to explain this, but “buttons”. Like tactile interaction with the gameworld instead of actions died directly to controller inputs. Best example I can think of is Iron Lung, how you control the sub by pressing buttons on a control panel and moving to a different station to take photos, instead of moving the ship with WASD and taking pictures with SPACE.

I think it's overused. Also, when you go full circle, you haven't gone anywhere. Foreshadowing the very end at the start means that your journey was meaningless. You ended up right where you started.
