What are some of the strangest mechanics you've seen in vidya? These tops in Marble Garden Zone have always stuck out to me as weird. They're not particularly easy to use, fun, or interesting. There's also that barrel in Carnival Night that has no reason being as impractical as it is.

Sonic games have always just been set pieces, even the genesis ones. They billed themselves on BLAST PROCESSING but even in Sonic 1, the only levels that actually let you go fast are Green Hill and Twilight. The rest of them are a fucking slog. the boulder levels in crash 1 were designed to go forward like the other levels, they just flipped the camera around. it sounds retarded and i don't know a better way to explain it

Mario yeets the baby penguin off the cliff in Cool, Cool Mountain. You're supposed to return the lost penguin to its mom for a star, but everyone tried this at least once to see what would happen. Spoiler: the mom doesn't care, and you feel morally ambiguous for about five seconds before long-jumping off the mountain yourself.

Spark 3 has a truly awful timer mechanic that kills you if you fall for more than a few seconds.
you don't die form hitting the ground, no the game just kills you for no reason in mid air. the game does not even attempt to explain what is supposed to have killed you.
It feels so jank like a glitch.
What's worse is the dev made a vertical level that he realized this shitty mechanic wasn't going to support.. so he actually had to put in special rings you fall through that reset the timer that kills you. it's the most sloppy jank design ever.

FF7R is a game that sells itself as an ARPG like KH2.
But unlike KH2 and every other action game in existence it's Action combat is fake, devoid of merit and purely superficial.
it's mechanics do not work and it violates basic game design rules.
For example it has a dodge that doesn't work. it's completely useless as it's slow, has terrible mobility and it has no I-frames either.
in 99.9% of cases it's better to simply run or use a dash attack instead.

But the most bizarre design fail of the game is the fact that almost every boss has at least one scripted attack that does unavoidable damage to you no matter what.
like these homing lazers.
-there is no way to avoid them. they will simply hit you.
-there is no challenge to over come here, the attack simply exists
-they don't do much damage but they don't serve a purpose either so why does this unavoidable damage exist?
the game starts to make a lot more sense when you finally realize the devs did not design a game. they designed a movie.

I don't follow.
Not only do all the mechanics and fights work properly
e.g dodge actually works, all attacks were designed with a way for sora to avoid damage from them if the player knows the mechanics.
but the frame data, motion programing and attention to detail on animations and every aspect of combat is so refined it's impressive.
