>rogue class in RPG
>you can't actually steal anything, you're basically an assassin
Why is this so common?
>>
>>732192791
There aren't any ways to make thieving actually fun in a combat related scenario.
>>
Idk but some JRPG did it where you can gain more coin or XP when you play that class. I forgot the name of it.
>>
>>732192791
Rogues don't necessarily steal, you're thinking of thieves.

Combat stealing a-la Turkish Assassin's Creed 2 addon, but stealing weapons/shields/parts of armor, so enemy becomes more vulnerable/weaker - what item is stolen depends on your position relative to enemy - helmet from behind, shield/caster appliance from the lefr, weapon from the right. Add smoke bombs, that will momentarily disorient enemies in small zone and go full Ninja Turtle from that scene with bells in the movie, leaving the enemy as naked as you wish. And have some enemies to be more aware, to be able to counter your attempt to steal with a shield bash in yoiur face - and have some golem enemies (that aren't hard for unga-bunga fullplate zweihander) to be hard for thief cause nothing to steal and small weak weapons just for the sake of balance.

Main role of a rogue is scouting ahead for traps and opening locks. Combat is secondary.
>>
>>732192791
because these are all combat games, and having a non-combat class is shit
>>
>>732192791
That's why it's called a Rogue, not a Thief.

>>732193240
It's the same class. It comes from D&D, they were originally called Thieves. But Wizards of the Coast bought the license and renamed the class to Rogue with turd edition.

Your image involved dark souls so I will assume you're talking about action combat RPGs. Most action combat encounters don't last long enough for something like this to be practically useful, and modern devs don't like to let you do funny things to bosses outside of the allotted interactions which are usually parrying, hitting and dodging. For something like that to be an actual core feature in a game that's useful and not some gimmick, the game itself would have to be entirely designed around accounting for that in every interaction. I'm afraid to say that modern game devs do not have the passion for something like that.

Rogue =/= thief. End of story.
>>
>>732193778
You can hate it if you want. But it's a fact that the history of the Rogue class in gaming is just the Thief being renamed to Rogue.
>>
>>732192883
the most elaborate stealing mechanic i saw was in castlevania curse of darkness
>>
>>732192791
A rogue isn't necessarily a thief

oh ok so you're just going to ignore how you can loot anything not nailed down, farm enemies for drops, kill NPC's for their gear and even use the Dark Hand to steal people's Humanity?
TD would you even steal in Dark Souls? Everyone's either a brainless hollow or a mentally insane human about to turn hollow and leave all their gear behind to loot.
>>732193256
You can steal people's weapons in base game. Just parry while unarmed and you'll disarm any enemy, including the big knights and their OP axes. Without a weapon enemies can't block so you just instakill them
>>
>>732192883
Give enemies items they can use in battle but the rogue can steal to use them immediately against the enemies.
>>
>>732192791
Because rogues are not a combat class.
>detect traps
>analyze mechanisms
>solve puzzles
>sleight of hand
>picking locks
>thiefs cant
>cryptography
>alchemy/poisons
Those are all non-combat skills that help the party immensely. If the rogue, in addition to all that, was also a good combat class every party would have 2 rogues or more. They are meant to be opportunists picking off enemies distracted by other characters, usually fighters.

>play rogue/thief/assassin or whatever, we all know the archetype
>most of the class is based on getting a backstab out of stealth for big DMG
>several mandatory bosses in the game start immediately after a cutscene or the boss arena doesn't allow for stealth, forcing you to fight like a low armor, low damage warrior class

also
>play ranger archetype
>have to buy/craft ammo, have to juggle multiple ammo types
>skill tree full of gimmicky bullshit like placing traps that rarely every works and when it does is never worth the hassle
>meanwhile the mage class can shoot infinite projectiles for more damage at greater ranges and more flexibility

and most recently, in Elden Ring:
>stagger/posture mechanic takes center stage
>big hits with big weapons (mostly jump attacks) are king for perma staggering mobs and getting tons of free damage on bosses via stance break special attack
>meanwhile fast + light weapons such as curves swords, rapiers, twinblades and daggers are just status apply sticks, deal fuckall physical damage and boss openings are too short to get a proper combo in anway
>there's even a talisman that makes the last hit of a combo extra strong the longer the combo is but it's practically impossible to pull that off on the stronger bosses
>>
>>732198513
I thought Elden Ring was a Dex-fag game, as all souls-games are?
>>
>>732198693
Dex was strongest in DaS and even there big bonk sticks weren't weak. BKH and BK(U)GS were all good at stunlocking most normal mobs and deleting bosses.

DaS2 base game had a huge favoritism for blunt DMG on enemy bosses (because the dudes in armor trope was real) so clubs/hammers were easy mode.

DaS3 I only remember straight swords being OP as fuck pre patch but I think it was overall the most balanced between DEX and STR.

In Bloodborne the threaded cane was by far the worst starting weapon while saw cleaver and the hunter axe were both top tier.
The only good pure Dex weapon in the base game was the blade of mercy which was a bitch to acquire on your first casual playthrough, DLC added some but STR was overall a strong option that was in no way overshadowed by DEX.

At this point the DaS katana favoritism, the great scythe and falchion+DMB build started the idea that DEX was OP but it's only really true for the first game.
Also some tranny made a meme about not leveling dex because it's gay (ironic that he turned out to be a crossdressing fag)

The D&D 3E Rogue class is not identical to the AD&D 2E Thief.
>>
>>732192791
it's a war thorn place or critical moment to save the world

there is no time to steal dark skinnned friend
>>
>>732199187
I guess Gherman's scythe was also a good BB dex weapon but you only get that at the end of the game so I don't count it.
