So could the Eastern empire held out against the Ottomans if they had the men and resources from the West? A 500,000 more strong army can make a huge difference in these things.

Though delicate, it could be that the western and Eastern empires hold out throughout the middle ages into the modern era. Which is a weird thought.

Losing the East actualy hurts me than the west, since the west mostly shattered into hundreds of little Romes, but the east got hijacked by Muslims, changing the character forever.

Oh and North Africa would have been Christian had the Roman empire lasted. Can you imagine the impact on politics? No take over of Spain by the Moors for one.

Didn't the western powers try many times to stop the ottomans? Their loss at Varna was the nail on the coffin for the Eastern Romans.

Can you imagine going from one part of the continent to another in ancient times, with no methods of communication and ancient means of travel just to fight war after war trying to restore secessionst provinces of the empire.

And then after all your efforts, after all that time spent dedicated your life to a higher purpose, you get assassinated because of a clerk.

Their system was falling apart economically and letting the eastern roman half (the richer more educated part with access to grains and trade) split off was a huge fuck up.

Western Roman empire needed to reform, and to get their economics in order and end the inflationary crisis.

The Crisis of the third century nearly killed the western half, and argually DID and they just lingered for a few centuries then officially died.

The Vandals hijacking the north african trade and grain shipments was the final straw. Italy and Greece are not areas you can grow a lot of crops, so to feed their population they needed Egyptian grain. Vandals stole all that.

And the main thing is Islam. A strong Roman empire stops the westward expansion of Islam dead in its tracks, and a strong Persian empire stops it's eastward expansion. Islam would just be a contained Arabian religion.

The whole context of east vs west is created because of the division between Christianity and Islam. Before, the whole med region was interbreeding, trading, moving around, intermarrying conquoring each other, etc. With a strong Roman empire, the European Union might consist of North Africa and the Levant as well. All Christian and no Islam.

Are you retarded? No one "let" split off anything, it was an administrative division.
It's like calling the Russian federation divided.

It's official Roman Cope. Do you see Eastern Roman soldiers fighting in the west? The idea at first was an administrative division but then they continually drifted further and further away.

Read any account of the later Western Roman empire. They're raising an army on their own, have their own economy, etc. The two empires became financially, militarily, and politically, split.

>It's like calling the Russian federation divided.

And you see Dagestani and Siberian soldiers fighting in Ukraine today. Eastern Roman soldiers were not fighting the Western Roman empire's wars. For the simple fact that once the western and Eastern roman emperors consolidated their powers, it was not in their interest to weaken their position by doing charity for each other.

They were one entity with the same enemies up until the debacle at Adrianople.

Then the eastern part made a separate peace by paying off barbaarians, such is the nature of effeminate and weak Greeks.
