>>
>>732203134
Sniping wasn't the problem, but cloaking was and specially time when you can decloak, shoot and cloak again giving you a free escape card.

This mechanic won't let you countersnipe and lets you kill enemy before you can be fully visible for them and that was bullshit.

Recent infil balance change made this class what it should be many years ago.
>>
>>732204460
>This mechanic won't let you countersnipe and lets you kill enemy before you can be fully visible for them and that was bullshit.
It was pretty easy to countersnipe other infils, you just figure out where they are camping, wait for them to standstill and uncloak, and then dome them. The real genuine cancer of infils were the short range snipers that could run 3x scopes and would camp indoors instead of on mountains.
>>
>>732204584
A skilled infil could basically shut down an entire fight and no one could counter him except maybe another skilled infil.

Giving cloak and unlimited range 1hit weapons to a class was incredibly retarded.
>>
>>732204747
>A skilled infil could basically shut down an entire fight and no one could counter him except maybe another skilled infil.
In a 12v12 sure but as soon as the fight's pop goes up it doesn't matter if you hand out headshots with every round the point is still going to be overrun.
>>
>>732204869
I've had it happen in 24v24's before. There's basically nothing you can do outside of also playing Infil which is boring in a class based game.
>>
>>732195785
Opinions on time to kill? For huge games like this I think it should be relatively low
>>
>>732204982
>There's basically nothing you can do outside of also playing Infil which is boring in a class based game.
nah there is plenty I hunted down infils all the time. HA are the best at this with nano+shield letting you facetank a full headshot and then you blast the little niglet while he tries to run away. Flanking with LA is another way too if the infil is up somewhere high on a building.

Infiltrators were fine, fight me. Keyboard warriors celebrate their victory on the sloping deck of the Titanic. "Finally, scope glint, the game is saved!"
>>
>>732205001
it's around 0.3 seconds with most weapons if you can headshot. The triple-ping (quad with 143/125 weapons) kills you so fast that it's basically instant. Most guns take a while to kill you at mid/long range though which is good.

I actually think they struck a pretty good balance outside of the 1hit kill weapons.

>>732205097
Skilled Infils will hug corners/doorways where they can get their shot off, then disengage to re-chamber and get another shot off while safe. The problem with the overshield is that you have to activate it to save you, and the way lag works in PS2 meant that Infils have already taken their shot before they are visible on your screen. The nano-armor cloak made them tankier than a HA while they're running off at full speed just to add insult to injury.

I don't even care about the fact that they can go invisible, but it's the fact that invisibility was used as a combat ability as opposed to a repositioning ability like it should have been. The spy on TF2 got cloak right, you could have your instant kills but the risk was very high and there was defined counter play (even going as far as designing a class specifically to counter them which is probably what LA should have been).

Devs keep trying from time to time, but everyone uses fucking Unreal Engine or whatever these days, and there's just no way to torture it into working with hundreds of, or even a couple thousand players at once. Then the failed projects that discover how difficult it is to scale end up launching with some bullshit like a 64 player cap, and it doesn't hit the same.
PS2 has a bespoke game engine built from the ground up to scale well, including a load-balancing system on the server end that can seamlessly network several physical servers together to host different parts of the same map based on player activity. Plenty of developers who made PS2 also had backgrounds working on the original PlanetSide, of course, but also EverQuest, and I'm sure that's important tribal knowledge for getting something like PS2 off the ground. The cost of developing the new game engine from scratch was supposed to be offset by its use for EverQuest Next, as well, but that died in the womb.
Following the relative lack of success of PS2, there just isn't a company willing to put the huge amount of engineering work in to make a competitor, especially as games keep getting more detailed and therefore expensive to develop. They'd rather stick to existing formulae. It's only going to get harder with time as the popularity of the MMO genre continues to decline, and competent systems engineers with experience working on this sort of stuff become impossible to find. Shit sucks.

I FUCKING LOVED BATTALION WARS
>>
How could it be anything but /v/anu sovereignty?!

Anyway, I was always massively disappointed by Planetside 2's monetization. Turning it into an item mall shitshow for cosmetics and P2W faggotry was always disappointing compared to the original Planetside, which was a flat subscription fee title and had a much better system of progression. PS2 took too long releasing the content that the original game, plus the shitty monetization made it worse; I also had an overall annoyance about the admitttedly autistic minutia that unlike PS1, PS2 took away the immersion animations for entering any sort of of vehicle or seat. In PS1, when you entered a vehicle, it playeda little animation of your char opening the hatch of the tank or the door of the gun turret and sitting down inside. PS2 it was all Battlefield faggotry where you magically popped from one place to another. I don't know if this bothered anyone else, but it felt cheaper overall .

Still, I loved the concept of Planetside and even PS2 theoretically, its just a pity that few have tried to keep it going.. When it was great, there was almost nothing like it. I can remember spending 30 minutes painstakingly sneaking my way into an enemy base or tower in my infiltrator cloak suit (which in PS1 had room for only 1 pistol sized device at a time and melee; plus little armor and a tiny inventory), with Advanced Hacking and Combat Engineering , so I could hack the spawn tubes at the right time and allow my squad to spawn in, hack the equipment console so they could gear up in enemy territory, and finally get the control console, or blow up its reactor to depower it under the enemy's control until they no longer had resources to even spawn there. Tense, yet amazing gameplay. I was also an ace Liberator and Galaxy pilot, dropping bombs and/or players into hostile territory. Good times!

This is the case overall - it was just plain hard to do. Also keep in mind that even PS1 was ahead of its time. This was a game that more or less required broadband and pretty decent graphics at a time both of those things were rare and expensive. PS1 came of age when a lot of people still had dial up after all! Some of the solutions PS1 used became an issue later on - chinese hackers exploited a lot of things being done client side in the game';s later dead-ish years - but for its time it was a technical marvel and really fucking hard to do.

Also there is a game that is trying to do something similar now but on even a larger scale
>Star Citizen
It does a lot more than just PS style ground combat, but the times when you're assaulting a bunker especially during certain events etc... it feels a lot like PS did in the old days. Along with the many types of ships (including those specifically designed for troop transport and drops, like the Valkyrie, Cutlass Steel, Vanguard Hoplite )There are ample ground vehicles incuding tanks, buggies, etc.. and of course on-foot FPS style combat. There's also the wonderful physicality and animations getting into vehicles and the like that the original PS did, among expanded mechanics like all the physical presence of items (ie your cargo hold needs to be physically packed with boxes its not just on a list somewhere. If you try to jam giant oil drums into places around your ship not made for it, they WILL be affected by physics when you take off and possibly kill you, damage the ship boucing around , and more)., and elements like the relatively complex medic system that's being built and the first iteration of engineering duty stations, fuel transfer etc.

A lot of this stuff is just technically hard to do which is why even though its clearly desired, when you can just make another survival crafter small scale or gacha, its easier.

>TEH SCAM
Unless you're listening to J-URINAL-ISTS there's no reason to assume that. Its risky, its the autistic vision of a 60 year old man has wanted to build for 40 years, but its farther from a scam than any gacha or bullshit item mall finished title out there. Its unfinished trying to do something difficult from a technical standpoint, but its coming along and even the unfinished bit is far more immersive than most other games now. You can have a Planetside-like experience today in SC's alpha, among fuckload of other stuff.

>>732220458
>sold $1000 ships hurrr
Crowdfunding, with the explicit design that those ships will available in game through play, not exclusive. Hell, many of them are available now in the alpha. If you started an account today after playing for awhile you'd have the equivalent of $600+ ships just from in-game currency. I can't really be upset about the expressed
>We are selling ships and other stuff pre-launch to raise money, but all the ships and even most of the cosmetics will be available in game by playing it. Also we don't plan to sell ships or other game content directly post launch as it fucks up our in-game economy.
policies. Anyone who bought some $1000 ship years ago thinking they were going to be the only ones with it or be some sort of overpowered whale clearly didn't read and it was their own damn fault
>15 years
We already established that even making a game like Planetside is too fucking hard from a technical standpoint to get most companies to attempt, and Star Citizen is many times more complex. Also keep in mind that the crowdfunding started in 2012 and the game's full scope wasn't even set until 2016, so its not like they started on day 1 with a huge studio and a set scope, but they asked the community essentially "do you want us to make the most in depth autistic thing possible unfettered from publisher fuckery, that nobody has tried before?" and people voted with their wallets. I think its worth it to have someone giving it a try.

Yeah, it kinda was journalists and clickbait fags who kept yelling about the same shit. If you spent $40 years ago on SC (and at the time also got Squadron42's key, the single player Wing Commander like associated campaign game) and dropping in to play whenever you wanted in the alpha, plus have a key and extras that will work when it goes live. Seems less scammy than a fuckload of other games and I have fun that feels like old school MMOs and PS when I play.
