It’s weird how 20 year old games can still be so impressive despite getting absolutely eclipsed in terms of graphical fidelity by modern slop. Just goes to show that good art direction and attention to detail is what’s most important. FEAR really landed in the sweet spot.

I would say good visual direction, lighting is only a part of it. You can run Dead Space 2 with RT now, which takes a good bit of the lighting out of the equation, yet the game still looks amazing because the art team understood how to compose assets together, and how to communicate intent and themes.

>It’s weird how 20 year old games can still be so impressive despite getting absolutely eclipsed in terms of graphical fidelity by modern slop
Point of diminishing returns,
and good art-design > tech specs.

Especially with the advent of Deferred Rendering and overuse of volumetric effects, the image CLARITY has absolutely tanked. Games are a visual art form, mostly experienced on a 2D surface, so you literally benefit from oil-painting tier use of color and shape language. Make things "pop", and it will look better, and make the game easier to "read".

Another thing that's hard to demonstrate in still images is the overall STABILITY of older games' image. With the UE5 era shit, the frame is constantly suffering of noise, shimmering, smear... all because the plethora of temporal effects and terrible "optimization" tricks being used to make the poorly made PBR models play well.
>>
>>732198227
not like even with 2 pass vp9 you can make video look good unless it's already noise free and the length is only 8 seconds
>>
>>732199003
what game
>>
>>732198462
>Play games like this 20 years
>Okay, this is epic. No I don't need *more*. Graphics here are more than acceptable. I can't wait to see what games are like in 20 years, now I don't have to worry about graphic wars or any of that dumb shit
What a naive little retard I was.
>>
>>732198462
>good art direction and attention to detail
it's just paying attention to your rendering stack but picking out each layer of a frame does require big brain. however if you've already made a game, hacking in and out a new rendering stack is a small amount of time to make the game much better. too bad corporate retards using UE megascans are incapable of checking a poly count let alone bother with changing the stock lighting.

How were Half Life 2's textures so fucking good? Maybe I'm retarded but I don't think there is much resolution to any of their textures but they look infinitely more detailed than the most graphics whore game ever conceived.
>>
>>732207408
arent most of the textures based on photo references?

>>
>>732207408
That era of textures is literally just photos with a detail bump and some specular highlights ontop. Most of the skill came from editing the photos into usable textures and picking photos that had the right kind of shading for the environment.
Textures nowadays are definitely more detailed. The problem is that we rely so heavily on post effects (especially TAA/DLSS) that it blurs the shit out of the final image making everything look really soft compared to old games.
>>
>>732197662
>>732198138
I don't have any gifs of it but Crysis 3 had real caustics that weren't just smoke and mirrors.
Like if you covered the light source the caustics would disappear.

The issue is that AAA games aren’t a series of linear corridors any more. When games have huge open worlds, detail and fidelity takes a backseat.
>>
>>732205842
I mean they still do to an extent
just look at the weather system in the latest Assassin's Creed, it looks fantastic, shame about the rest of the game
Expedition 33 creator was at Ubi, wasting away making assets for some slop game before he decided he had enough and took a risk forming his own studio
lots of talent is out there they're just stuck cause they need to pay bills or aren't comfortable trying to branch out on their own and are forced to make what the suits tell them to make
>>
>>732198462
because for all the effort of graphics we have available, it's underneath a bunch of post processing effects and blurred from upscaling and terrible rendering practices
triple AAA games barely even do interactive clutter, something that was seen as next gen graphics, having cans and stuff get kicked around, was literally left behind and modern games don't care about it.

developers look at a blurry 30 fps screen upscaled from 480p, with tons of ghosting and on top of it all dozens of post processing effects that instead of improving visual fidelity, actually makes everything unclear with halo's of light surrounding them
then they say it looks great
>>
>>732205842

Asssassin's Creed Shadows is literally Technology: The Game but nobody will ever talk about it because of black guy.

It’s smug armchair devs, Everytime someone posts the train hat from Fallout 3, every midwit with a chip on their shoulder says that they would have implemented a full train system in the game for a 5 second cutscene
>>

Never happened to me, it was easy to see huge improvement every 6 months in games back then.
However, I was very impressed by the first Far Cry.

The line up of early 360 games were pretty impressive, such a shame we didn't know the fall off gaming would crater when normalfags and jews would come to stink up the industry chasing money and equity instead of pushing artistic passion.
>>
>>732210196
Ha, almost included it as a point of magic tricks working, together with out-of-bounds trickery in Half-Life.
>>
>>732199696
Fuck I miss those crisp textures of the 00s.
Yeah they were lowres and sharpened to hell, but they popped.
>>
>>732209948
Probably Oblivion. But the 360/PS3 gen kept topping itself year after year. I remember being impressed by Dead Rising, Oblivion, BioShock, Assassin's Creed, MGS4, Skyrim, Red Dead, Uncharted 3, etc.
It's PS4 where the improvements became so marginal that I stopped really noticing.

The last game I was impressed with was probably TLOU2 though. Certainly better looking games exist now but the leap from TLOU1 -> TLOU2 is substantial and TLOU2 still looks better (and runs better) than a lot of modern games.

I'm trying to figure out how they did this and the only way I can think of is that they made a mirrored map that rotates and the door to that rotating map is the mirror.

>>
>>732210843
there is no 'copy of a room behind the glass' anon. You can turn any wall into a mirror and engine will render it. Unfortunately only 1 mirror can be seen at a time
>>
>>732205842
>what happened to the timeline
Assassin's creed happened
>>
>>732209948
Crysis made me think imagine what games will look like in the future.
But the "it won't get better" was probably RDR 2.
>>
>>732207201
>lazy tricks
You mean artistry? Creating a believable world with labor and vision?
That's what is wrong with new "graphics."
They just want the engine to simulate all this shit so they can fuck off and make loot boxes and battle passes.
Graphics cards makers saw CoD and FIFA and thought.. Hey, why can't we just make them buy new hardware every year, too?
>>
>>732211256
RDR2 has pretty graphics but it's one of the most blurry and unresponsive games I've ever played. RDR2 at 4k looks like 1080p because of how insanely blurry it is, and the input delay is so enormous that it feels like there's multiple frame generations going on. For that reason alone I'll never praise its technical aspects.
>>
>>732211368
Well it had a lot of issues and I didn't even finish it but it was probably the last game that made me appreciate the graphics and animations.
>>
>>732211360
or - get this - devs want to speed up the process so they can make more content in the same amount of development time
>>
>>732209948

>>
>>732202881
Fucking Zoomer.

It's probably two transparent textures overlaid on top of one another.

Not only does it cost no resources, it makes the game look absolutely stunning.
>>
>>732211474
Speed up the process by skipping the whole "optimization" thing, yeah...
