Couldn't you advertise how exciting the risk:reward is in an RTS and attract a lot of players? The genre gives you that edge of your seat, in the zone feeling more than maybe any other. Dealing with tunneling is why the genre is so challenging. If RTS delivers the strongest risk:reward loop in games, why aren’t we selling that? What do you think the strengths and weaknesses of the genre are?

Most /v/irgins are extremely weak/limp and impotent though, so any form of risk turns them away.

>strongest risk:reward loop
That would be gacha.

PvP games are the most popular and hours played games. People are already playing competitive shooters and MOBAs all day. RTS are a lot more intense, and that translates to more fun, especially because a good RTS has so much storyworth. "I farmed creeps for 75% of my day" is vastly surpassed by all the cool solo and team plays you can do in SupCom. Commander rushes and drops, mobile artillery unit drops, T2 artillery pushes, static missile launchers, nukes -- the list goes on, and it translates into castability too. It has to be more immersive scouting, countering, and innovating a match -- the tunneling/intensity is huge; I don't think CS and MOBAs have that.

frostpunk managed to make an RTS exciting but then frostpunk 2 came out and we all realized they did it on accident in the first game - other than that I haven't felt excitement from an RTS since caesar 4

Is TA: Kingdoms as good as TA?

I love robots so much. I think SupCom land, sea, and air might be the best representation of futurism. Plus, you can design turret rotation speed and direct vs. arc weapons.

I think air battles are some of the coolest gameplay.

RTS and current year shooters have teammates you blame when you lose.
Nobody plays arena shooters and RTS because 1v1 is hard and stressful and you can't call someone else a fag for wasting another 35 minutes of your day.

I'd say it's not bad at least and I like some of its aspects better than TA's.

The issue is that it takes 500 hours to learn the games and the best way to do that is lose 600 matches at 45 minutes apiece. Unless you're unemployed nobody has time for that shit. More RTSs need a game mod where you can fight a bot that's not a campaign.
>>
>>732214478
You don't have to play 1v1. Most people aren't going to be motivated to play 1v1, and that's fine. RTS has had team games since the 90s.

I do think that people should play 1v1 eventually. I think that may be vastly more rewarding and skill expressive compared to the average team game where you base build for 20 minutes, but comms team play would probably be more fun than 1v1; you could win most pubs.

>>732214909
I had somebody 19 minute Scathis in the eco slot on Dual Gap. It was so good.

SupCom and AOE II have bot skirmish.

i think the Earth:2050 series or whatever its called let u design the units. Or u could pick what legs to put under what guns.
Oh impossible creatures let you mish mash aminals to create... impossible creatures

>SupCom and AOE II have bot skirmish.
Playing against bots isn't at all comparable to playing against real players.
AoE 2's bots in particular seem to be well known for their shitty, inefficient tactics.
>>
>>732216908
Yeah, realistic AI would probably be easy to do.

I wish more people made stuff about it, like fanarts and shit

FAF has AI bots trained on players. They do use real tactics and adapt
>>
>>732218606
I don't really see that pic happening in RTS threads much. It's usually
>Make PvE, not PvP.
>Muh campaign -- everybody will play RTS if you just focus on singleplayer content.
>APM.
>Gookclick.

>What do you think the strengths of the genre are?
It's the only genre where your multitasking skill is tested *hard*.

>What do you think the weaknesses of the genre are?
It's the only genre where your multitasking skill is tested *hard*.

That's why all genres birthed by RTS (and more successful than it nowadays) simply removed most of the multitasking requirements by getting you focused on only a small task.
RTS need to focus their tutorials / early campaign missions on breaking the player's multitasking hymen, way before trying to teach unit counters or workers pathfinding optimization and shit.

how come the supposedly replacement genres of RTS aren't more popular than RTS?
>>
>>732223085
AoEs are pvp games desu.
>>
>>732223085
>how come the supposedly replacement genres of RTS aren't more popular than RTS?
They're popular, though. And there are also hundreds of smaller games that amount to a massive population of players who are no longer interested in RTSes.
>>
>>732222423
Need an RTS with waifu units. Mechfags can probably help, they must have coomers who can somehow design a sexy factory or a sexy tank.
>>
>>732225673
There's a flaw in that approach - RTS players are fags who don't really care about women in their vidya. Mecha is kind of a niche, too.

Pic related, but:
>RA2 had sexy girls and /u/, and is one of the most beloved RTS
>Jaina&Tyrande had a ton of fanart before even WoW. Pretty sure Kerrigan too
I think it's more of a lack of opportunities.

APM is only ever a problem in gookclick. Arbitrary tasks that artificially increase APM are stupid. I've seen somebody gookclick AOE II, but I don't know if that's actually better, or if he was just being pedantic. However, games with extremely fun PvP are often not very much APM. What do you think?

Yeah, waifus do show up in cutscenes, unit portraits, voicelines, ads, and even complete woman factions like LC in Earth 2150 only to get no bite. Pearls before swine.
>>
>>732214241
I played it like 20 years ago but I remember it mostly being a reskin but with 4 factions (5 in the expansion) instead of 2. I think maybe it didn't have as many superweapons like big bertha though.

beyond all reason took total annihilation and made it even better (except for the menu UIs)
