I'm about to play pic related, I've touched it before but never for more than a few minutes maybe.
Anything I should look out for, any tips?
I heard there's a way you can fuck your game up, so knowing how to avoid that would be good.

2 is better in every 1. 1 is a shitty tech demo with a rhythm minigame.

Is it not a situation where I could play 1 and then move onto 2?
I had 1 when I was a kid but never owned 2 so there's a bit of nostalgia in there for how it looks and plays.

Majuular has a good video about it on youtube. I think he mentions the soft lock thing, but I forgot what it was. Something about upgrading weapons, maybe. Its supposed to be pretty grindy. The sequel looks phenomenal though, it has a ton of systems and extra side shit to do. Theres a whole golfing game in the second one where you go to old dungeons and hit balls through portals; its got a really elaborate rule set. I played a metric fuck ton of pic related while I was snowed in last week and it definitely seems like the spiritual successor of the dark cloud games: arpg with town building mechanics and an endless list of crafting and other shit to do. I was pretty mild on it at first but it really clicked when I picked it up again last week. The way that all the different quests feed into eachother is hypnotic, its like digital crack. I lost about six hours to it last saturday and didnt even realize until it started getting dark out.

You can, but 1 just feels like shit. A lot of thr convoluted systems were removed, and replaced with better mini games etc. Iirc you can softlock the first game by running out of money and progressing the first dungeon too far. Convert your gold to bars if you're shit, and grind the early floors for upgrades using the mayor for free powder when you run out.

If I remember correctly, the story totally resets in 2, so its not like theres a plot reason to play 1 first. 2 does look a bit more cartoony but that was the last game level 5 put out before they got picked up to develop dragon quest 8 - which is probably the greatest honor conceivable for a young rpg studio in japan. I have a sneaking suspicion that the studio was talking to the dragon quest team while developing dark cloud 2 and saw that game as some sort of proving ground to earn a chance to develop the next dragon quest, because there is clearly a ton of love poured into dark cloud 2. But nostalgia is a strong motivator and a fine reason to play 1 first.

i killed a ps2 trying to beat this game with no memory card, i think it took two weeks straight of being in game. i gotta give them credit playstation honored the warranty every time and and were really quick

i really wish there was an expanded version of the town building mechanic in these games. you either ran out of objects to place or ran out of space, and forced to build houses in the way the npc wanted which was annoying.

despite that, to this day i've never seen a town building game with that level of charm. where you can switch between topdown view and then run around in 3rd person.

Closest thing you get is the new rune factory

one of my favorite games, the second one is a huge leap but the first is just pure early ps2 soul

It just looks awful as a kid I didn't want to play these games cause "playing with dolls was lame, why would I go play a video game that looks like dolls"
