Just beat this. How the fuck did the lighting work in this game? And those effects from the ending? Is it secretly 3D or something
>>732230018To ceeate depth, the foreground graphics are 2d while the background is 3d.
yeah idk how the lighting works, but the visuals and stuff are pretty complicatedthere's a good presentation that the devs did in 2017 where they go over how the animation works, it's pretty interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVntwsrjNe4
>>732230018every room is pre-baked which is why it's not scrollingon another point of discussion: anybody play the updates to the watcher? i haven't played since the initial release. my opinions on it were very mixed and overall i think it was kind of a disaster. somehow worse than downpour. i read the new endings/features on the wiki and they just look lame
>>732231934the update didn't fix the fundamental issues.
>>732232262there is nothing to fix
>>732231934watcher 1.5 added new creatures, new areas, improved old regions, new npcs, new endings, pearls, stuff like that. It really should have been watcher 1.0. Personally I think it's great but I really liked watcher on release anyway. If you fundamentally don't like the watcher mechanics, things like that haven't changed.
>>732231934Neat, thanks anon.>>732231934Oh, my next question was gonna be if the DLC is worth checking out. I guess not? Even if I do get it I probably won't play it for a while, I'll let this first run sink in a bit
>>732232289 cope. it’s still a jank-ass mess of half-baked ideas and skinner box garbage dressed up in aesthetic. mechanics feel like someone added them out of obligation more than intention. if you squint hard enough maybe there’s “lore” or whatever but I’m convinced most of it wasn’t even planned. it’s just vibes.
>>732233048no, both dlcs are greatthey're a bit different from the basegame, but totally worth playing if you want more rain world
>>732233170seethe
all the map files look the same and are colored using palletes, but i wonder how the layer depths are storedis that why the .txt files are so massive? assuming it's the collision layer in there but there has to be something else
>>732233048depends. do you like rainworld for the experience or for the gameplay. for the experience? they are travesties. for the gameplay? they're alright. only two of downpour's campaigns are good for that imo, with only one actually having a moment comparable to the base game. and watcher is a mess because it's quite literally just a bunch of mods bundled together into a dlc and so the level design and overall cohesion is not up to par
>>732233715there are probably videos on modding areas that discuss it? not surealso if anyone wants art assets and room screenshots from the game you can get them herepersonally I like using the merged screenshots for wallpaper slideshowshttps://github.com/IsaacElenbaas/RWMShttps://github.com/laurapigeon/Rain-World-Images
>>732233715https://rainworldmodding.miraheze.org/wiki/Rain_World_Code_StructureThere's gotta be something in here that'll be useful to you.
i didnt really like downpours campaigns as much but it had some pretty cool parts it was really cool seeing maps/views of the whole area we play the game in and i wish watcher didnt go in literally the opposite direction with the dimention hopping shit
>>732234994the cool parts:>metropolis>looks to the moon>uhhhh... maybe saint's version of five pebbleswaow>uhhh... maybe saint's version of the wall
>>732235503damn i messed up... time to kill myself
>>732232289Modded regions that don't fit the style of RW because they were never made with it in mind, because they were fuckin mods and didn't have to follow the standards. The creators of modded regions then went on to work on this dlc too, and I don't like the level design of it.Modded creatures that have abilities crazier than downpour slugcats did, in a game that was going for realistic but alien ecosystem. Fucked up plot that doesn't work that well, everything breaks apart the moment you ask 'why does watcher need to do this'. Original game established the plot with it's opening cutscene of survivor getting separated from his family and trying to find the way back. Watcher just does shit because he does, okay chud? And I remember when they advertised this dlc for having no crazy abilities like downpour lolThe new regions are too small, 80% of them are too linear structurally. New creatures are not as thought out like vanilla, though at least they are unique unlike downpour additions. The dogshit ancient reveal that only hurt the game, removing all vagueness of the scale of the world. Reminder original RW devs (I know James worked on Watcher too) went against showing the scale of the world on purpose. Now there's no turning back, the original game is now stained by that damn reveal and I hate this.I'm not gonna bother going over the new warp system, it's obviously flawed but I don't know how it could be done differently. I hate random teleports though because they always put you into same 5 regions every fuckin time.
>>732235650>i dont like it!ok? how does it relate to my post at all??
>>732236194I like a lot of it, but my point is there's a lot of dumb shit that needs fixing. Unfortunately it's fundamentals so all we get is another patch that adds 1 or 2 bubblefruits for normies that couldn't find food
>>732236536>>732232289
>whine about jank>fuck up my own post's spoiler tagspottery. let's try that again.>>732231934There's a new early-mid game pseudo-passage[/spoiler] mechanic, and late game ways to deal with rot. Not sure that's enough to fix Watcher, but it's something. The couple extra regions and creatures are nice but don't add that much, arena/sandbox unlocks should have been there from the start, and the pearls had their potential wasted on funky_jam.wav and blurry_selfie.jpg. They just don't feel worth the effort compared to vanilla pearls, not even after the patch that let you carry multiple pearls through AU and daemon type portalsAnd the jank's still there. They somehow managed to replace any jank they fixed with brand new forms of jank. Random double-spawning is still a thing, the "reset region spawns" mod/tool is a must. And that's without getting into the way old Watcher saves are all kinds of fucked up in tiny, annoying ways.
>>732237145alright, fine, guess somethings fucked with trying to spoiler the word pseudo-passage specifically? fuck it, I'm not gonna bother trying to fix it again
>>732236902You know I'm right. You think of it every time you have to crawl through Outer Rim to leave it
>>732231934Downpour was a massive downgrade from the rest. I played twice, the "beta" when it first launched on the PC and the 1.5 version on the Swtich ( I already had over120hours on that shitty version, sunk cost fallacy basically).I actually had to wait over a month because the launch version was literally unplayable, constant crashes and frozen rooms.I actually somewhat enjoyed the first run, the whales were cool and Ancient Urban was probably the best reward for long time fans. The updated version had a ton of more stuff, that made the game bloated and much more annoying. Colored pearls, more infected places with almost softlock situations and a new path where you "stitch" the infected areas and you become a worm(?).I had more than 60 hours and gaslight myself into playing it until I was too annoyed of the constant back and forth looking for the one exist that will connect you to the place where you want to go.The lack of continuity of the map is probably my biggest issue. Everything is disconnected, feels like stages in a Mario game.
>>732230018I wish we could get an indie with visuals as good as this again, it's by far the best looking sidescroller and indies have been leaving a lot to be desired lately, graphics wise at least
>>732230018>Is it secretly 3D or somethingyes
>>732240261Goddamn so it was, thanks dude. I was stupefied since the first time I threw one of those electric balls.
