Valheim has now been in early access for 5 years.
Why does it take less time to go from zero to early access than from early access to 1.0?
>>732230076I keep thinking about buying this shit since it keeps showing up for $8 but it also sounds like they've done absolutely nothing with it this entire time
>>732230231It's probably the comfiest game existence, but yeah, they have done fucking nothing with it on those five years.
>>732230167There is no interest for a game like Valheim to "release", they already made a fuckton of money and they can just keep releasing the ocasional patch for it.ยดThe game seems to be done too, you can play from beginning to end, as far as I'm aware, but they can keep releasing stuff to pad out the middle. If they said "yeah this is 1.0 the game is done" nothing would change
>>732230167The last 20% takes up 80% of the time?
>>732230483>The game seems to be done too, you can play from beginning to end, as far as I'm awareReally? I thought they only did a couple biomes and once you got through those it dried up
>>732230554I mean, I could be wrong, it's been a while since I've seen news for it, but if it's not the case then they can just keep releasing the ocasional patch and it will never have an actual endingThe main reason for it, again, they already made their money there is little incentive for them to finish it
Anything after plains is basically separate game in terms of how shitty and annoying it becomes and devs basically ruined what was an extremely comfy and fun game to play. Perfect example of releasing a great game then not understanding what made it great, or simply not wanting to make more but feeling obligated to.
>>732230648>Anything after plains is basically separate game in terms of how shitty and annoying it becomesPlains can be included in this as well
>>732230076Those are rookie numbers, watch this
>>732230909I highly agree. Damage numbers are fucking retarded in this game, and if you get killed, it's pure aids to get back on track.
>>732230947>AprilSon of a bitch, got me beat. And I'm still mad I bought it for $6 on their own webpage when it was a browser game
>>732230648I liked the plains and progressing from there to black forest, then it takes a nosedive with the swamp bullshit. And mountains are cancerous as fuck to climb and too small to even be worth climbing.
>>732230483The game isn't finished, but they should finish it this year.>>732230554They still need to add the last biome, Deep North, but the game already gives you an absurd amount of hours. If you play without guides, it can easily last you over 100 hours, even if you're not new to the game. If you take the time to decorate, fishing, or build a nice base, one run can easily give you 300 hours. We recently did a run with a friend and it took us about 40 hours. We did it in a hurry and I was left wanting more. The game allows you to build really nice bases and I didn't take the time to do it.
>>732230076and it's still a dogshit wikigame that actively wastes your time on this earth and encourages cheating at every turnyou want to know where to go next? fucking open the wiki retardgetting your ass kicked by the new progression gate and want to find out what you need to do to increase your power level? you guessed it, fucking wiki it upyou want to find a vendor? spend months literally just wandering around in your ship or just cheat and look up your seed generationanother prime example of why you should never buy an EA game
>>732230076>load up game yesterday>character is naked>house is half empty>starts to fall apart because of missing pieceswell, thats just great
>>732230947legitimately the only early access game i've had fun with
>>732230076this game feels and looks WAY older than that
>>732232652I've literally never once used a wiki for that game. You can't "not" know where to go, just explore the world and you'll inevitably stumble upon lands you haven't seen.>vendordidn't even know that was a thing. Clearly he doesn't sell anything vital though.
>>732233056>advanced cooking recipes gated behind the bog witchshut the fuck up, you haven't finished the game>didn't even know that was a thing.are you retarded? legitimately asking. why the fuck else would the game have Coins as a lootable item if not to trade?
>>732232852I know. I love it. I wish more studios made retro feeling games.
>>732233056You intrinsically knew to start a new map because whole continents didn't exist before?
>>732230076my friend group got filtered by the swamp, without friends this game is tedious as fuck. i still regret paying for this stupid game
>>732233937This, the realization of how boring it all is hits during the swamp. The plains being right after doesn't help since anyone hoping for things to get better, immediately gets btfo'd by a deathsquito upon entering them.
>>732230167because making content is often extremely time consuming compared to core gameplayjust pick any of these games and use your brain for a moment, its obviously much harder to reach the 1.0 than the initial stages of EA. Specially when the later content is so much more mechanically elaborate making assets in particular is retardly expensive
>>732230947Starsector is in perpetual EA because the devs don't know how to commit to a goal, it's been nothing but Star Citizen-tier scope creep for the past 5 years.Valheim is in EA because the devs made a shit-zillion dollars in 2021 and stopped giving a fuck.
this is one of the best comfy/base building games released in the last 5 years if you completely ignore the retarded devs and mod the stamina needed to both jump and run>but that ruins balance!the combat sucks ass anyway, its just there to service the atmosphere and creating good-looking buildsthis solves:>swamp sucks because you cant move>mountain sucks because you cant move up>plains sucks because you can't run that much>mists sucks because you can't jump (though its still the worse biome)and makes the game highly enjoyableyou don't need 50 mods, you just need valheim+ to tweak stamina to require -60-80% of the base game's systems, its still enough to require you to eat one stam food but lets you then focus on HP which solves late-game high dmg enemy problemsive never seen a dev get so close to greatness and completely miss the point while adding so much tedium into the game, maybe other than project zomboid
Factorio was in early acces for 7 years.... but it also defined a genre, is one of the most highly rated games on steam and is a technical marvel.
>>732230076I wish this and Conan Exiles had a child, which would be singleplayer focused and more rpg-like with normal cities and npcs and stuff. I like some features in those 2 games, but overall don't care about survival games.
>>732230076So? It's already got 100s of hours of content, it doesnt need a 1.0 release to have fun on it
>>732233937Yeah, the game's progression is extremely grindy. Mining tin and copper already sucked but now I have to travel to a different location and do it all over again. Also I have to sail to my main base because you can't teleport with metal because muh cold iron vs magic or something. Though I think that one got an option to disable it added eventually. It's not even that you have to prepare supplies for an expedition or establish an outpost. You can still pop back to base to grab food or whatever. They just make you sail back for no reason.
>>732237192At least with Factorio you know the dev gives a fuck. The sheer amount of autism that went into that game is insane. And it's the good kind of autism for once.
>>732230231I played before they added two new biomes and felt it was worth that price. And I hate early access crap on principle.
>>732237709You can mod the game to eliminate all the dumb time sinks and it makes it very fun even solo.
>>732230231if you like building stone castles it's the best one that exists because you can rotate each individual cube of stone but it also has weight and structural tolerance limits - combined with occasional enemies storming your castle which makes it a tower defense game as well.
>>732230648you need to use all the foods/buffs/armor upgrades or the skill gap is insane with mistlands and ashlands - also ignoring your skill gains makes it severe as well. Most people that complain about the higher zones are the ones who skip the harvesting/farming/grind part of the game and ignore skill loss from death thinking it's inconsequential when it's really not. Jump for example is almost double the height when maxed out. THe stamina requirements for each skills go down a lot with higher skill levels. It's a great game the devs are just beyond slow
>>732232652the vendor thing is lame but it's not essential all you get from the vendor is a belt for higher carry weight and eggs for chickens
>>732230076The atmosphere in this game is probably some of the best I've ever experienced, but it's only fun up until the swamp
>>732237709i disagree the ore transport is hard - if you get the big ship and stack up the ore at a local location near you then transport all of it in one boat ride it makes the boat ride suspenseful and exciting because of how much you could lose if the serpent kills you - maybe you don't like that level of planning/preparation/hardcore'ness but i loved it - i found a swamp area that had like 12 different sunken crypts in it and had a load of iron that was like 500 iron to take back on the boat
Interstellar marines has been in early access for 13 years.
>>732230076I've tried 3 times to play through this game, I've always quit during the Swamp stage. That place isn't even that hard but at upon reaching that point, the sense of lonelyness becomes overwhelming, I realise I'm not having fun and I'm playing a game that is orders of magnitude more fun to play with friends I'll never have. It's not the iron grind, the difficult terrain or annoying enemies, it's the mini depression that places inflicts that filters me.
>>732230076if you play this game with the mentality that it's a perma death game you will enjoy it - if you are absent minded about dying you will hate it as your skill loss will keep you weak
Most of these types of games stay in early access for ten years before they just slap 1.0 on an unfinished game.
>>732234428>you just need valheim+ to tweak stamina to require -60-80% of the base game's systemsstamina drain goes down massively with higher skill levels, what really needs to be adjusted is the skill level grind being slightly easier to level also it has to be stated but the battles you can have in ashlands with a buddy or two are SO FUCKING EPIC omg we had a troll staff that spawned 2-3 giant trolls to fight against enemy AI and when you raid a ashlands fortress and the magic class dudes are spawning enemy AI everywhere, one of your buddies is a mage casting fireballs everywhere and etc - it's fucking EPIC it felt like a giant WoW raid battle at times - you also have siege weapons in ashland for raiding the fortresses. This game is really hard and punishing you just have to be super vigilant about dying and planning and not staying out at night - it lures you into thinking it's a simplistic game with it's graphics and etc but it's not at all - this is a hardcore game
>>732239271it's not like that - it's mostly polished way more than other games like zomboid for example - it's just the dev is super slow - also the dungeons get more and more advanced and larger as they scale up in zones. 1star and 2star enemies should always be treated like boss mobs and feared greatly whenever encountered in the wild - the thing is its' RNG for where they show up so it can feel too random and punishing at times. I had a big castle and it spawned plains trolls to attack my castle and they were 2star mages and 2star beserker trolls, broke down my front gate and made it into the castle courtyard - was epic as fuck but only happened one time due to the RNG of spawning 2star trolls not being very common.
>>732239046>OH MY SCIENCE IS THAT A L-L-LIMINAL SPACE?!>WHERE IS THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE HECKIN' BIG CITY?!>WHERE ARE MY CHOCKIN' WHOLESOME FRIENDERINOS?! AAAAAAAIIIIIIEEE I'M GOING INSANE!!!
>>732239046it's definitely more fun with friends bro - see my other comment about ashlands and big epic enemy fortress raids with siege weapons. Swamp zone can be annoying because of being wet and needing iron for so many things means you will be making tons of trips to it - no way around that though - i'll just tell you i found one swamp zone that had a dozen different crypts in it and then i had enough iron for a long time. I did used to play this game very stoned and listening to music all the time though.
Valheim is not bad, as far as the "survival crafting" genre of games is concerned
There was an update today.
You shouldn't be able to release a game into EA unless you can guarantee a full release within a year, if you fail to meet that deadline you need to issue refunds no questions asked.
valheim has the best building system of any of these survival slop games I've played. It would be 10x better if they had larger dungeon assets and greater overworld variety. Lazy devs
>>732239638No man is an island, we all need companionship, we go insane without it.
>>732237909The building system is great, but because each piece is a separate instance the performance absolutely tanks as your base grows.By the time you're nearing the late game even a modest base on a high end computer will be struggling to maintain 60fps.
>>732234128No you retard it takes way more time to get an engine and the gameplay you want going. From that point it's easy enough to just add more stuff assuming you didn't make it stupidly.
>>732231080What? You might not like having to use everything available. But I remember everything including the firelands being fairly well balanced difficulty wise. Food, potions and the best gear you can use, and most things die fairly quickly, and you will need to tank quite a few hits to die.
>>732230947Lead dev is deathly afraid of his game getting shit on in any kind of botched steam release. I wonder if we'll EVER see it make it there. Oh and that wiki article is wrong. I remember seeing it on /v/ back in 2012 when I bought the game.
>>732239046I could never play a base building game with friends. I like things done exactly how I want them. My comfy innocent wouldnt be comfy otherwise. THAT SAID, I agree that NPCs in structures you create would add a lot of life to the game. Terraria had it figured out 15 years ago.
>>732238349I agree with the suspense and the intensity... the first time you do it. Once you kill your first serpent, you quickly realize how tame they are, and how easy it is to hop to the nearest shore and repair the boat. After that, ore transportation literally just becomes a massive time sink. With shitty weather, I had ore runs that took 30min and more. It just fucking sucks after the first time.
>>732239960To see if we still feel.
>>732239046>>732239046>didnt get the game at launch, EAshit keeps me away>friends buy it>watch one of them stream it>"wtf are you guys doing, why are you mining shit piles in a sewer">"bro we've been in this crypt for an hour, idk how we're gonna get all this iron back">no idea what they're on about but join in>epic LARP journey as i nig enough wood and supplies from their chests to sail to them without knowing whats going on>enter some weird green crypt>one gives me an axe>kill zombies while they mine and defend them pulling carts at 0.0000005mph back to their big boat>epic LARP sailboat home, fight a sea monster on the way>get back, throw ore in smelter and shit>go off and build my own little base in the woods to play from 0 normally>eventually catch up in progression thanks to some help just in time to do moder and the entire plains with themive played through solo twice but it definitely benefits from friends
>>732230947>>732231347 2013 was a mistake
Hosting a dedicated server for friends was one of my favorite gaming experiences ever. We went into the game completely blind and it really hooked us in.
>>732240384greylings wandering into your house to throw stones at you is the companionship a real son of odin needs
>>732241286Blind was so much fun. The only time we got stuck was early on when we didn't realize flint was a thing. After that it taught us to be more aware of everything potentially being a resource.
>>732237591It bewilders me that despite the success of games like this in the indie scene, that AAA devs are completely ignoring the genre. It's absurd that Dragon Quest Builders 2 is the best AAA Minecraft clone in 15 years.
>>732230076Rimworld was in early access for 5 years.
>>732241276The Mayan calendar was correct, 2012 was the last year the world as we knew it at the time would exist.
>>732241286Shit like this is the only reason I'm sad about being a hermit. Got one buddy that likes to co-op stuff but he's similar to me in that we hate 90% of survival crafters and it's only the very rare exception like Terraria we both enjoy, and then a small scattering of ones only one or the other of us enjoy like he's a Palworld nerd since he likes pokemon creatures and I love 7 Days to Die because I love gibbing women
>>732239271looking at you, TARKOV.
>>732241196> massive time sinkyou can hold 540 iron in the long ship bro - how many trips of that do you need?
>>732242541idk, isn't enshrouded a AAA copy of valheim?
>>732244104Probably need a lot if you want to make Barad-Dur
>>732240448i have a 35k instance giant castle that runs at 60fps in 4k but i have a 9800x3d and 5090 so...
>>732244435you do and I did but i enjoyed grinding it while stoned and listening to metallica
>>732232652You must be some sort of idiot retard>raven tells you to use the stone to find the first boss location>1st boss drops materials for pick. When you craft a pick, raven tells you to go to the black forest for ore>when you clear the black forest, you get an item called a swamp key>the swamp gives you materials to resist frostetc etc
>>732244146I don't think it qualifies as AAA but it is similar to Valheim.
